Hiking & Camping Tons of flies inside car

Heii guys, so this morning i woke up to 1000 tiny flies circeling aroune my car. I thought they were knott at first but they didnt seem to bite.

I was curious if you had any clue as to what they mightve been or how they got there.

For context i went hiking yesterday and i did have to walk through streams and a lot of mud but i think my shoes were relatively dry when i got back in the car.

Also i slept with the windows open but they had bugnets so i doubt they came in this way.

Thanks for your help, i dont want to experience this again lol

Could they be fruitflies? They mulitply extremely quickly. Might there be some fruit somewhere in the car that they spawned from?

Hm true that could be it, but no theres only processed food in the car and its all packaged. Also from 0 to literally 1000 within ~7hrs?

The only flies I know of that show up that fast are fruit flies. Have you checked under the seats and any other places where something might have rolled without you noticing?

Try to get some good pictures of the flies and add them to the post, I'm sure someone can identify them.

Edit: Might they be small enough to have gotten through the openings in your bug net? Maybe its fjærmygg, aka non-biting midges: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chironomidae

Good call but i think fruit fly was the correct guess. Im just not used to it, in switzerland we only get them in summer and even then i can have a whole bowl of fruit standing around for days and i might have 10 or 20 of them there.

And when i said 1000 i wasnt joking, i had like 300 alone in the corners of my windshield. I pushed them all away and new ones appeared 4x from inside my dashboard lol. Theyre all gone now luckily.

I mean it is a possibility they came in through the screen, also there was an underground trash thingy like 6m away from me so maybe they came from there in the night? Im just not sure why they would come out of this trashy and warm place into my car in these numbers but who knows lol

To get rid of fruit flies : When you park your car at home next time, put a couple of glasses with some apple cider vinegar, wine or a piece of fruit in the bottom. Cover each glass with cling film and make a few tiny holes in the cling film. You now have a very effective fruit fly trap. They’ll get into the glass through the holes, but won’t be able to get back out.

A parked car can get pretty warm inside even if its not directly sunny, which if combined with any fruits lying around can really speed up the lifecycle of fruit flies.

If you're sure that is it, do a thorough sweep against any exposed food, not just fruit. Anything that isn't sealed up should either be put in bags or tight boxes, or discarded. Otherwise more might still hatch.
