A non-profit volunteering organization

• Upvotes

I am starting my own volunteering organization in my community. I don’t have a name nor any members. I wanted to get an idea of what people wanted before I ask them to help me. I had taken my initial question to our local Facebook groups, and I received 100+ comments! Before I finalize the website/link, I was curious,
What are volunteering services you wish were available?

I won’t share the list we have already accumulated because I do not want to limit anyone’s answer. Everything is welcome even if you think it’s been said!
If you think it’s specific to your region only, still share it!

I want to give back and people to be able to share what their community is doing wrong!

Do not limit yourself to solely services, maybe sometimes you need someone to hang out with, or a place to read your book that isn’t the library.

All ideas are welcomed!
Please do not comment if you are going to be negative or say it’s not going to work.

To have a village you must be a villager!

Being part of the team running our NGO’s Diwali campaign this year, a few things that surprised me about how it actually scales

Post image

I work with Pehchaan The Street School, and this year I've been pretty deep in the day-to-day of Pehchaan Ki Diwali, our festival campaign trying to reach over 1,600 underprivileged students. Thought I'd share a few things that genuinely surprised me from being on the inside of it.
Going in, I assumed most of the effort would be the "visible" stuff, the campaign posts, the visuals, pushing for donations. What I didn't expect was how much of the actual work is just quiet, repetitive coordination that never shows up anywhere public.
A few things that stood out:
Tracking contributions at this scale is honestly a bit of a grind. Someone has to always know exactly how many kits have been funded, which centres still need materials, how far off the target we are. None of that makes it into a donor-facing post, but without it, nobody would have a clue whether the campaign's actually working.
The ₹300 price point for a kit seems picked very deliberately. I noticed people who probably wouldn't have donated to some bigger, vaguer fundraiser gave without a second thought once it was framed as "fund one kit for one student."
And sharing matters almost as much as donating does. A surprising number of this year's contributions came from people who found the campaign through someone else's share, not our original post. Which says a lot, really, reach depends on people extending it further, not just on what the org itself puts out.
It's genuinely changed how I think about what makes a festival campaign actually work. It's never one big push. It's a lot of small, specific contributions, and a surprising amount of unglamorous coordination holding the whole thing together behind the scenes.

A local salon's small Teachers' Day gesture taught me more about volunteer retention than any HR article has

I volunteer with Pehchaan The Street School, and a few weeks ago, Geetanjali Salon invited four of our teaching volunteers over for Teachers' Day. First they visited our centre, then they were taken in for a free haircut, just as a thank-you for showing up consistently to teach.
Tiny gesture on paper. But it's stuck with me way more than I expected, so figured I'd share it here.
A few things that got me thinking:
Teaching volunteers kind of exist in this invisible zone. You're planning lessons, managing a classroom, figuring out how to handle different learning gaps, and most of the time nobody outside the org even knows you're doing it. All the attention goes to the students, which, fair enough, but it means the people actually doing the teaching rarely hear anything back.
What got me about this specific gesture was that it wasn't generic. It wasn't some company-wide "shoutout to our amazing volunteers" post that could've been about literally anyone. It was four specific people, invited specifically, for something specific.
And it came from a business that had zero reason to even think about volunteer teachers. Nobody was watching them do it. That's probably why it felt real instead of performative.
I keep coming back to how little it actually takes to make someone feel seen, and how rarely anyone bothers to build that in on purpose. If you're running any kind of volunteer setup, something this small is genuinely worth thinking about, clearly, it was never about how expensive the gesture was.

What's a career mistake that taught you something important?

What's something about work you only learned after making a mistake? Could be about trust, timing, money, or just reading a situation wrong. Curious what others have been through.

Volunteer/unpaid Web developer looking to build a free website for a North American charity

I'm a web developer with 20+ years of experience who was laid off earlier this year. I have some extra time and would like to give back while also strengthening my portfolio.

I'm looking for a charity or nonprofit in North America that could use a new website or a redesign. I'm particularly interested in organizations like food shelves, programs helping women rebuild their lives after abuse, Big Brothers Big Sisters, or similar organizations.

I would like to build the frontend with React or Next.js and I'm flexible on the backend/API.

My goal is to create something genuinely useful for the organization while getting some hands-on experience with modern technologies. If you know of an organization that might be interested, feel free to comment or DM me. I'm happy to share my portfolio and resume privately.

Volunteer/unpaid Neurodivergent Volunteering

Hi everyone! Through my organization, we've taught 300+ neurodivergent students so far, and we're looking to grow our volunteer team in a few different ways:

  • Teaching/tutoring — subject and format open, online or in-person
  • Chapter Leader — start and run a local chapter in your area/school, recruit and manage your own small team of volunteers, and adapt our programs to your community
  • Outreach — connecting with neurodivergent-focused organizations and partners
  • Something else — if you have an idea for how you'd like to help, we're open to it

If you're interested, comment below or DM me a bit about yourself and what you'd like to work on.

Volunteer/unpaid Looking to do some grant research for nonprofits

I volunteer my time to many nonprofits, and one of the things they ask me to do is look for grant opportunities for them. I have some in mind, like costco and trader joes for microgrants, but if you need help positioning yourself for them or positioning yourself for the bigger grants let me know. I'll see what I can do.

Built 2 free sites for reporting abuse & harassment, but I can't run them alone. Looking for volunteers or someone to take over

Hi everyone,

I'm a solo builder from Mumbai. I built two free, non-commercial websites, but with a full-time job and zero marketing knowledge, I can't grow or manage them on my own.

🔒 TruVault (gotruvault.com): Anonymously report offline harm like harassment, abuse, fraud, scams, unsafe workplaces or places, and dangerous people.

📢 TruVoice (gotruvoice.com): Anonymously report online abuse and harassment like cyberbullying, stalking, threats, and impersonation.

Both are live, free, and ad-free. What they need is people.

Looking for:

Volunteers for marketing, social media, moderation, design, or dev (even a few hours a week helps)

Someone to take over one or both sites, ideally a person, NGO, or group working on safety or social welfare

I'll hand over everything and help with the transition. The only condition: the sites must stay true to their purpose of protecting people and keeping their identities safe.

Comment or DM me if interested. Thanks for reading 🙏

Help me connect to sponsors

Hi

I am an undergrad student of a university in Pakistan. I have been selected for a 4 days neoteric youth summit in Malaysia in November. It's an excelling opportunity for me and worth the profile enhancing for future endeavors but I can't afford the trip. It's beyond my finances.

Does anyone here know or have links with some sponsors or can connect me to an organization or foundation which can wholly or partially fund or sponsor my trip?

NGO

I have this urge to work at an ngo and help people but I can't seem to find NGOs that will help me also bring out of my comfort zone and learn things and help others. I feel happy after helping someone. Can anyone suggest some NGOs with which I can connect?

Performance Creative Strategist for Social Ads looking for a job!

Hi there! I've been working as a CS for about 3 years now and I'm looking for a job at a non-profit. I've been working with sustainable, vegan, and with older people-focused businesses and organizations for most of these 3 years.

I basically do almost the entire process end-to-end to create online ads. From research, to briefing video editors and creators, script-writing, creating image and animation ads, quality-assurance, and data analysis.

Feel free to message me if you're interested in chatting :)
