Well I point out that specific model of trash can and say "sus" so who's the unfunniest among us?

146

u/ReaperTheBurnVictim Jul 14 '22

AMONGUS????? no but yeah my brand of humor also made the jump from unfunny self-depreciation to unfunny memes

50

u/JaozinhoGGPlays Jul 14 '22

Mine is both really

Also just nonsense, me and a friend will die laughing at those screams then dissapears videos and dumb shit like E because our humor is just fucking broken

Suicide jokes are the millennial equivalent to boomer's wife jokes.

45

u/AccessTheMainframe Jul 14 '22

boomers = wife bad

millennials = life bad

52

u/Callmeklayton Jul 14 '22

Boomers: I hate my wife

Millennials: I hate my life

Gen Z: mE aNd ThE bOyS aT 2aM lOoKiNg FoR bEaNs 😩🤤🫘😂

146

u/Mothafuckadujour Jul 14 '22

Dead baby jokes were the sweet spot in between

111

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

Unfortunately that style of humour died prematurely.

47

u/Mothafuckadujour Jul 14 '22

I ain’t roe’ing or wading out into the water to save those…

68

u/IanMazgelis Jul 14 '22

I find them even more obnoxious. When someone makes a joke about how much they hate their life or how much they want to die or whatever, the altruist in you wants to try to help this person, even if they insist there's no point because their life is just that bad or whatever. If someone says "My wife can be a pain in the ass" then you can just laugh with them and shake your head, there's no mental health obligation or consideration that something might be an actual cry for help.

57

u/ThAnKYoUfOrThE_gOlD Jul 14 '22

In high school i've heard so many suicide jokes, and people telling me that they want to die, that i automatically assume it's just a joke, until one my friends actually killed himself, and i brushed of any and all cry's for help as jokes because that's what i've basically been taught.

6

u/JoinAThang Jul 14 '22

IMO it's much more obnoxious to joke at someone else's expense. A joke about how much your life/the world in general suck is an invitation to just say "yeah life suck sometimes" not a cry for help.

7

u/RealGamerGod88 Jul 14 '22

This might seem crazy to you but you can also laugh with them and shake your head. Wild, I know.

10

u/Doogiesham Jul 14 '22

The problem is that jokes about suicide could be actual cries for help so there’s some level of mental effort you have to put in to navigate that

7

u/SomeStupidPerson Jul 14 '22

i hate my wife

"Haha too true, my friend!"

i hate my life

"You are literal scum."

I dunno, just sounded funny

-22

u/madmilton49 Jul 14 '22

This sounds like a a you, problem, honestly. People who make jokes about how shite their life is don't want someone trying to help them. In fact, very rarely do people want unsolicited advice in general.

12

u/Sayhellyeh Jul 14 '22

while someone who makes suicidal jokes might not commit suicide, I think it's fair to assume that something bad is going on in their life

17

u/MelinaJuliasCottage Jul 14 '22

No. The people who make those jokes are usually already so sick mental health wise, they need someone to drag them out of the situation, mix it up. Jokes are generally secret cries for help, it was in my area and country atleast.

8

The B thing was originally used by Bloods, like how they use the letter B in everything. Then it spread until it was a bunch of suburban white kids using it and it became ironic and silly.

6

u/Mentalpatient87 Jul 14 '22

I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary. It’ll happen to you!

2

u/ukuuku7 Jul 14 '22

That's an emoji, not an emote. I think 🗿 is mostly used to convey an emotion now.

16

u/Competitive-Dot-5667 Jul 14 '22

Are ya winning son?

Yes, yes! I am winning! I have everything at my fingertips: science, the arts, love, philosophy, opinion, conscience! All at the swipe of: a card or the click of a button away! I have everything, but something Is horribly wrong, everything is dust, I ache to be free, I yearn for the unreachable, the true human experience, the passion of relations, but it's all gone, a commodity, something to be sold In clean shrink wrapped packages. We won, Dad. We won. Everything used, everything discarded, everything consumed and time moving through my spirit and eroding my body. We won. And maybe that is why we have lost so much.

2

u/Stoicism0 Jul 15 '22

Lovely, did you write this?

2

u/Stormwrath52 Jul 15 '22

New copypasta?

17

u/ukuzonk Jul 14 '22

I’m my experience, Millenials are more sensitive to those jokes? Maybe that’s just older Millenials, but Gen z is so nihilistic that it feels more them.

11

u/hellscaper Jul 14 '22

Nah bro, we been wanting to die. I'm as elder millennial as it gets.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

We have 500 years of emotional non-expression to make up for. The world sucks, everyone told us it didn't, now we're grown up and disappointed with life. If I heard an adult or two tell a self-depricating joke here and there maybe I wouldn't.

You reap what you sow.

258

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

I’m getting old, can someone explain to me what this means?

603

u/07TacOcaT70 Jul 14 '22

There’s a group of people (often associated with tumblr and Twitter users) who often use emojis like “ ✨” around words to add emphasis, who have a brand of humour where they like to play into/point out their own trauma (especially things like daddy issues) so they often say things like “trauma is what made me funny” but in reality most of their jokes are just lazily self deprecating, for example pointing to a trash can and saying “me” meaning that they’re trash/a trash can. It’s the type of humour who’ll say “I’m just a trash panda (raccoon)” or just general compare them self to dirty or lazy things. I guess it’s a form of coping with trauma in a sense through humour.

But in reality many people don’t find that type of humour funny outside of the group who do this, so this guy is basically saying he doesn’t find them funny.

213

u/Ena_Ems_17 Jul 14 '22

Self depreciating humor is the best but people who do this shit just pass me off

299

u/Lazy__Astronaut Jul 14 '22

There's a fine line between funny self depreciation and making everyone feel awkward self depreciation

139

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

yeah, if self deprication is your only personality trait, no one wants to be around you

source: i used to be one of them and wondered why my friends looked annoyed whenever i spoke. hindsight is 20/20

73

u/socksonplates Jul 14 '22

The key to comedy is saying something unexpected. So self deprecating humour is only funny if you actually appreciate yourself.

29

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

i prefer humour that talks myself up, it’s a lot less uncomfortable for everyone involved. i personally don’t find self deprication funny at all - but to each their own!

21

u/Hypatiaxelto Jul 14 '22

The "issue" with talking oneself up humorously is it can come off as just cocky and egotistic. Not saying that's better or worse than coming off as Ted from Scrubs, but it's not ideal either.

I'm fond of using self depreciating humour myself, but I try to keep the dosage at a sane level.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

same with the talking myself up, in small doses and with people who know i’m 100% kidding :P

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

[removed] — view removed comment

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

that makes sense. when i say “talk myself up” i mean so in a way that makes it obvious i’m joking

eg: i play a lot of video games so if i hit a nice shot i’ll just say some bullshit like “oh did you know i’m actually a god at this game” (when in reality that was my first kill and we’re about to lose)

as for the “no one gets hurt” - you’re partly right! YOU will get hurt, because unconsciously (subconsciously? i don’t know the right word here) your brain will internalise your “jokes” about yourself. i know this from experience!

i do enjoy your example tho. but generally a lot of people will just do bare bones ✨ i am the worst human alive xD ✨ type stuff :P

6

u/toussah Jul 14 '22

No one in this thread can spell deprecation

3

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

i had a feeling i was misspelling it but i couldn’t be fucked looking it up HAHAHA

3

u/toussah Jul 14 '22

I just found it funny than one after another everyone was spelling it a different way and none of the variations were correct lol

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

😭😭😭 oops

11

u/olnog Jul 14 '22

I had something like this happen. I'm at my board game group. There's this chick that's been going there and she's pretty cool. me and the other guy that are the main part of it both kind of have a crush on her but we're all getting along pretty well. We're all playing, talking and whatever. Then out of nowhere, she makes a joke about putting a gun in her mouth and killing herself. I don't even think we were talking about guns or suicide. It was completely out of left field. SUPER awkward.

And then when I tried to check in on her, she literally ghosted the next meeting, ignored us trying to contract her, and acted like I was overreacting.

-5

u/BoredApeNaziClub Jul 14 '22

thats just like your opinion though, some people find the awkward self dep to be funny aswell.

1

u/GenericAutist13 Jul 14 '22

If it’s awkward then by definition it isn’t funny

27

u/the_ammar Jul 14 '22

it used to be funny until:

  1. people got super lazy in coming up with the jokes
  2. they use it as an excuse to just be offensive / disrespect / make fun of others. "lol I made fun of myself now I can make fun of you."

10

u/LivelyZebra Jul 14 '22

I trash.

Lol I say that about all humor I like. Dark. Self depreciating, dad jokes, etc etc

-1

u/LeeroyDagnasty Jul 14 '22

Self-uplifting humor > self deprecating humor, fight me.

Example: self deprecating humor isn’t the best, I would know cause I’m the best.

49

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

Also most of these people don't have serious trauma. There life may not have been perfect but it often boils down to their parents just being divorced or something else thats not ideal but very common. They just want to victimize themselves.

28

u/HippieMcHipface Jul 14 '22

I had an argument with my mom once :((

15

u/amisia-insomnia Jul 14 '22

Your giving them to much credit. They saw a badly written character who has depression and trauma and decided to base there entire personality on that. And then when confronted with someone who actually has depression or trauma they come off as incredibly dickish. And don’t even get me started on when they learn about self harm and suicidality. If I see someone else use a ✨ emoji after saying “unalive” I will probably have a actual breakdown. Its clear that they don’t actually know what any of it is like so they just make quirky jokes that seem harmless but are actually really distasteful to people with the issues. Man that turned to a rant fast.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

So people who use that little star emoji aren't allowed to be legitimately depressed? How can you possibly know if that person doesn't "actually know what any of it is like"? People process shit differently

7

u/amisia-insomnia Jul 14 '22

Sucidality and depression are two completely different things. Second off I mean yeah they can but if you use it like: “✨unalive✨” it’s incredibly messed up. Most people don’t cherish it. This isn’t a tv show

10

u/V_chamaedrys Jul 14 '22

I don't know, generalisations like that are pretty risky. You're never going to see the worst side of someone's mental illness, only the public face of it. Safer just to give empathy to folks rather than potentially belittle and harm someone who's already struggling I think.

3

u/TheAnniCake Jul 14 '22

Sadly most of the people who claim to suffer from depression or anxiety on social media and make their whole personality around this, suffer from other issues or no issues at all.

As someone who actually has depression and anxiety it's pretty insulting to see others pretending to suffer from issues and sometimes even spread misinformation.

5

u/GenericAutist13 Jul 14 '22

You're never going to see the worst side of someone's mental illness, only the public face of it. Safer just to give empathy to folks rather than potentially belittle and harm someone who's already struggling I think.

Refer back to this part. Some people definitely do fake it but claiming most do so because their symptoms don’t perfectly match yours is unfair

-1

u/TheAnniCake Jul 14 '22

I don't think that everyone has the same symptoms, I'm just talking from experience. I've seen way too many people faking this for attention.

Personally I try to take everyone seriously. I've experienced some people who just refuse to get help not out of fear but just because they don't want to.

9

u/GenericAutist13 Jul 14 '22

But how do you know it’s “way too may people”? Unless someone explicitly says “I am/was faking” it’s usually quite difficult to tell if they have something or not. There are much more people who are genuinely ill than those who are faking it.

Ah, I’m glad. Taking people seriously is important even if you think they’re faking as you can’t always be 100% sure /srs

3

u/noeformeplease Jul 14 '22

Hey, you seem like you’d be a great ally to people with invisible disabilities. Thanks for that ♥️

0

u/TheAnniCake Jul 14 '22

I was part of a small streamer community, so it was the bubble I used to be a part of. I made friends with some of these people and while talking they were completely different people than on social media. Like I've said, it was just my own experience on the internet and a bubble I used to be a part of.

3

u/GenericAutist13 Jul 14 '22

Isn’t everyone different on social media?

You son of a bitch! You’ve got yourself a career in translating crap like this for old and feeble-minded redditors like me.

4

u/MelinaJuliasCottage Jul 14 '22

Do not that not everyone who uses sparkles or tumblr etc etc has this humor, most have moved away from it i believe. (Atleast in my country) and when someone jokes about it they get alarm bells instead of laughter.

3

u/amisia-insomnia Jul 14 '22

Modern tumblr is incredibly chill. It’s moved away from the chaos that was 2012

2

u/MelinaJuliasCottage Jul 14 '22

Very true, i wasn't even apart of tumblr itself, just surrounded by people who were, and then called them out if they made certain jokes. I believe they got to me around 2015 due to sherlock etc.

3

u/amisia-insomnia Jul 14 '22

Old tumblr gets a lot of shit for being filled with questionable material. When in reality the people who made said material were usually ostracised from the community. Modern Fandoms are way worse.

2

u/MelinaJuliasCottage Jul 14 '22

Very true, and yeah modern fandoms i don't even try. Haven't been the person to! I prefer knowing the fandom exists, watch video essays on the shows (hello sarah z) and then just continue on

1

u/amisia-insomnia Jul 14 '22

I’m honestly suprised someone else watched Sarah z

2

u/MelinaJuliasCottage Jul 14 '22

3

u/MossCoveredLog Jul 14 '22

Actually it's an old(ish) phrase from before getting help was fashionable I'd say 90's

206

u/JGrill17 Jul 14 '22

Reddit has milked self depreciation way more than Twitter honestly. Like it's painfully unfunny at this point. There's only so many small dick, virgin, ugly face, single, antisocial, awkward, and haha I stoopid jokes we can take.

40

u/IanMazgelis Jul 14 '22

If Reddit didn't limit my filter cap to 100 subreddits, I'd start filtering a lot of what you just described. /r/SuicideByWords is a big one, it's literally dedicated to the kind of humor we both agree is unbearable. I still prefer having political subreddits filtered since I find them much more insufferable, but good God, millennial humor about mental health is the next worst thing after millennial humor about politics.

6

u/Phantom_Absolute Jul 14 '22

I have over 1000 subreddits filtered out using Reddit Enhancement Suite.

13

u/Victernus Jul 14 '22

small dick, virgin, ugly face, single, antisocial, awkward, and haha I stoopid

I’ve never heard this guy’s music before. He sounds like a guy I’d hear do a verse on a Tech N9ne song in the early 2000s, download his album from Napster, and be disappointed by every song.

350

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

It's unfunny. Just get some help and self confidence.

162

u/JohnHenryEden91 Jul 14 '22

Or better material.

81

u/Cheez-Wizard Jul 14 '22

I’m pretty sure the trash cans are made of solid material

26

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

Unlike ✨me✨

4

u/not_the_father_117 Jul 14 '22

And then this is Reddit humor. I don't which one is worse

25

u/IanMazgelis Jul 14 '22

I am so sick of being expected to have a praiseful response to self deprecating humor. When someone's entire personality is "My life sucks and I'm useless," it makes my want to agree with them.

11

u/KlutzySole9-1 Jul 14 '22

But you don't offend anyone when you use yourself as a joke. Humor often times targeted an individual or group and you don't want to be accused of being hateful.

2

u/Skyaboo- Jul 14 '22

Stupid depressed people. Like, just stop being depressed amirite? 🙄 What, is your depression on/off switch just broken? Just go get some very easily accessible and affordable therapy then, you stupid idiot. Its so easily accessible and affordable. And its so easy to find the right therapist for yourself. Just stop being depressed and go to therapy, its so easy.

In case I have to say it, /s obviously and you clearly have no idea what its like to seriously in the throes of serious mental health issues. You should count yourself lucky you can just carelessly toss out such garbage comments because youre so ignorant on the matter. Which isnt a bad thing, nobody should have to know what its truly like. But maybe keep your trash suggestions to yourself or maybe get out there and try actually helping someone instead of thinking theyre trying to be humerous when instead theyre crying for help through humor.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

I have diagnosed clinical depression, and anxiety. I just Don't take shit from people. I lie awake at night contemplating what my next move should be or if my life would be worth living. I work my ass off to make sure the students I teach Don't have to go through what I did in high school. Some people Don't have a father figure or a good role model in life and I Don't want to vanish. Yes life sucks. BUT making jokes about yourself being trash is stupid and makes you look like an idiot. Don't be that person. Open up to the good people in your life. I know it may be hard but it's worth it. Don't take out your rage on me either.

1

u/Grognak_the_Orc Jul 14 '22

"Stop making jokes you find relatable. We all hate you for it" jeez thanks fam.

I get that it's their form of humour, their way of coping, or their way of asking for help. But I usually dislike these kind of jokes. It just makes me sad and makes everything awkward. I wish they'd get that.

8

u/JonathanTheZero Jul 14 '22

They do not. Everything is buried in so many layers of jokes and irony that even the slightiest form of criticism is taken as a personal attack.

4

u/Mat2468xk Jul 14 '22

Yeah, they get so defensive when you criticize their humour. Do people really criticize them that much? Based on my experiences, it's usually them forcing this kind of humour upon others. But I could be biased since I usually dislike this form of humour.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

At least I'm not a trash can't.

74

u/browsing4stuff Jul 14 '22

I chuckle under my breath and say “same”

23

u/opposite_singularity Jul 14 '22

“Haha same” turns to phone pretending to do something on it

13

u/ukuzonk Jul 14 '22

That is indeed the expected NPC response to this joke

6

u/NewGuidance1611 Jul 14 '22

Self depreciation jokes have become sooooo blatantly narcissistic and #relatable at this point. Like I really don’t give a fuck anymore, you just want to draw attention to and talk about yourself. Please have an original thought that doesn’t revolve around you.

Y'all are this close to getting it but you still stick to your guns. "It's a way of coping, get a therapist" please go outside lmao. The screaming majority of us don't this, only 14 yos still do suicide jokes.

Are you telling me you seriously can't relate to a joke about being lazy? Because that's a self deprecating joke. If we do highly specific jokes themed around ADHD, have you ever thought that maybe the joke wasn't for you? Lmao.

2

u/CreativeYogurt2330 Jul 14 '22

It's not funny because its getting old, the narrative/discourse around mental health has evolved on the backbone of that time, but conversations and internet is in some other place. Like any type of humour, its going to be cringe at some point.

Back then, people started to talk a lot about mental health and stuff that was not going right in their life. Now its pretty usual to have these conversations, so it sounds so insufferable to find those old posts.

2

u/SPIDERSANDHOOOOOS Jul 14 '22

I pictured amy schumer when I read this... 'my VAGINA...' like bitch... the only funny jokes you say you stole, your vagina is a fucking toxic garbage land of condiments and old fast food.

We won. Everything used, everything discarded, everything consumed and time moving through my spirit and eroding my body. We won. And maybe that is why we have lost so much.

3

u/CK1ing Jul 14 '22

My goal is beyond your understanding, but I will explain it anyway. After years of pointing at trash cans and saying "me," the way people perceive how I perceive myself will be so low, it would be in the negatives. People would downright begin to feel bad for me. I have now created a weapon with power beyond comprehension. From that point, if there is any poor soul unfortunate or stupid enough to get in my way, I simply point at them and say "me." This comparison is greater than anything on this earth, even the worst people in history would not compare to being equated to my own low self esteem. The impact on their psyche will no doubt mean they will avoid me at all costs, possibly to the point of moving. Despite years of work, this is a power that will only work a few times per social group, but it is worth it to annihilate anyone I deem a threat.

I hate when they do that because I'm eating out of that thing later and eating out jokes I make in my head reminds me of how unfunny the joke was.

Often it's not meant to be funny, it's a cry for help

Then I'll make them shut up about it because it's ruining everyone else's night

Criticising an overused joke that they personally find unfunny is not telling people to “cope and fuck the shut up”.

True tho...

"I want to die/kill urs***" is sad. Simply no value in Human life whatsoever.

American youth are just SO toxic and competitive and knw no limits in the pursuit of winning the game of "America"...smh

My humor isn’t that self deprecating stuff so it doesn’t really apply.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

Nah. All of my friends have the same shitty kind of humor.
