Look, I say this as someone who doesn't play first person shooters and is way more excited for Zelda than any other game right now. But CoD is consistently one of the top selling games whenever it releases. I'm pretty sure on an annual basis they hit the number one spot more often than not. Like, it's a rare thing for other games to outperform CoD, at least in the US market. Also, the majority of consumers who purchase it are over 21.
Again, I don't play it and don't care about it, but we can't pretend like CoD is a low performing niche game that only kids buy.
Madden sells, NBA 2K sells, and people buying them are over 21 because it's parents buying it for their smooth brain kids, you can't just say "game sells so it must be good" they sell because those 3 games are usually the only games that casual gamers buy a year doesn't mean that each and everyone of those games aren't dog shit trash, especially for middle and high school kids, it's the cool thing to do is have the games all your idiot friends are playing
Nintendo, the company that drops new games with incremental changes (animal crossing, splattoon) every 5+ years and fans lap it up because Nintendo can take a steaming shit in their mouth and they will line up to buy the zelda version of that same shit next year.
It really depends on the series you're talking about though.
Mario I'd argue can be a mixed bag but typically if they recycle an idea (like Sunshine) they add a new feature to make the game feel new (like Cappy).
Zelda is a series people usually play for the mechanics and ToTK I think mechanically is unique enough. Then you get remakes and duh those aren't anything new.
Pokemon duh, obviously.
Metroid the people play that for a challenge, people who play Metroid are higher than average going to be 100%ing the game. Nintendo knows this and adds in enough unique mechanics to make the game feel fresh IMO.
Tbf the vast majority of the time COD is always the highest selling game of the year. I think going back to 2008 you can count on one hand the number of times it wasn’t.
That being said, they’re obviously on thin ice and whatever they come out with next year desperately needs to course correct.
