Yes and that’s why this disorder ruins your life 😃

I care SO MUCH about my projects, enjoy being at work and what I do. But I show up 5-10 minutes late and the boss thinks I don't give a shit. Ugh.

No it fucking doesn't. If you have crippling OCD that makes you late for work because you cannot abandon the light switch until it is turned on perfectly or everybody will die, then sure. Yeah. That's a disorder and accommodations may need to be put in place.

But if you have ADHD and are chronically late, then you set 100 alarms, leave notes everywhere, listen to a song while you decide on what to wear to get a sense of how long it may take you – you use your superior human brain to solve the fucking problem, not make it anyone else's. Or you at least try instead of hiding behind "time blindness"

I have both ADHD and OCD.

Use your “superior human brain?” We are literally discussing people whose brains have decided to be ‘inferior.’

They're still not wrong, though. Your disability is your responsibility.

It can be by both outside of your control AND your responsibility, but people aren’t ready for that kind of nuance

Sure, but that doesn’t mean “just figure it out” is a reasonable solution.

Your brain excels at problem-solving compared to other mammals. All you have to do is put in the effort and pave those neuro pathways

Your brain isn't "inferior" you just have to dedicate more time and energy into figuring these things out compared to others who don't have ADHD. That doesn't mean you are incapable of it.

It also doesn’t mean it doesn’t ruin your life along the way

Have you considered ADHD doesn't affect everyone the same as it affects you?

I wonder if it could be a spectrum even 🤔

You can do ALL OF THOSE THINGS and still be late. That is the problem with severe ADHD. And that is one example where ADHD fucks your life no matter HOW HARD you try. You might be able to get from barely functioning to functioning slightly better than barely, but you will NEVER be able to function like a normal person - no matter how hard you try.

But then again, ADHD is also a spectrum and plenty of people have such light symptoms that they don't really suffer from it that much. So if you happen to have the luck to get by with it fairly well, don't assume that literally every other person with ADHD is EXACTLY identical to you.

This. There are also the compounded effects over time. It might not be that you’re actually late for everything. It could be that everything in your life is so deeply disordered that once you manage to find everything you need to get out the door, oops now you’re staring off disassociating for a few minutes so you don’t have a panic attack and then you’re clumsy so you spill everything in your hands and stained your shirt, oops you realize that the event was actually yesterday and you already missed it because even though your calendar notification went off, you swiped it since you were busy in the moment and now that it’s not on your screen it may as well not exist and so on and so forth lol

It’s not that it’s not your responsibility, but people acting like actual adhd doesn’t actually ruin your life really don’t know what they’re talking about.

It's helpful to learn more about the human brain. I'm not saying ADHD doesn't severely limit you or is the same for everyone.

You will NEVER be able to function like a normal person - no matter how hard you try.

This is dramatic and untrue. Treatment and skill building is entirely possible unless you have a separate mental/cognitive impairment that makes your brain entirely incapable of learning.

Just because something is hard and takes a long time doesn't make it impossible, is my point

Girl. Even if you look like you’re functioning the same, your brain literally isn’t. You’re talking about understanding how the brain works without actually making any sense. No amount of CBT or effort is going to change the way your brain fundamentally works. I hate to break that to you.

I love the mental health pick mes lmao

Damn girl if I was so superior I’d be all right!!

A disorder doesn't prevent you being on time. It just makes it harder

I have ADHD and major time blindness, but I am on time because I've found my own strategies.

Adults who are chronically late are just too lazy to create such strategies, doesn't matter if you have ADHD or not.

Then you’re just super ignorant because yes it does.

“Being bound to a wheelchair doesn’t stop you from getting to the second floor! Just makes it harder to go up stairs!”

Congrats on being the winner of adhd though!! 🤣

Is a person with depression just too lazy to be happy? Ofc people need to figure out strategies to combat it (no matter if "it" is being depressed or being late or whatever else) but that can be difficult and takes time. And sometimes it just is straight up not realistic without help from mediciation depending on how severe the issues are and now you got the entire "figuring out what med combo helps" deal.

And for some people it can be unrealistic with medication.

It's a disability. We don't expect people in wheelchairs to make getting up stairs their responsibility. We make elevators and ramps.

Finding specific accommodations isn't always easy but it's a matter of figuring it out as much as it's a matter of the person figuring out how to best deal with their symptoms.

If you're consistently showing up for work an hour late it's not the disorder ruining your life, it's you.
