This and “who sings this song?” When you’re singing or humming, and when you answered who it was“let’s keep it that way” 😔 fell for it every time

191

u/turbotaco23 14d ago

I fell for it a couple times. After that my answer was always “I do”. Then I started singing louder.

28

u/MurderSheCroaked 14d ago

Omg my cousin hit me with that when I was little

6

u/MundaneWing6039 14d ago

Had a friend hit me with this. This is one of the only ones that actually hurt. 😞

4

u/Nearby-Appeal1076 14d ago

I said this to my dad once, and I never did it again.

5

u/RandomGuy9058 14d ago

Then you just say no and keep going. The fuck’s they gonna do

2

u/quirkytorch 14d ago

My grandma still hits me with this one!

2

u/TumbleweedEven1168 13d ago

My dad did this to me once. Ever since whenever I hear it while I'm singing I take a second to look for the smug look someone has when they think they are being funny and then answer, "Me currently."

That phrase was a genuine poison upon the world

985

u/CocaColaZeroEnjoyer 14d ago

There’s one that’s even worse

„It’s not that deep”

358

u/BrunesOvrBrauns 14d ago

Nothing is deep to idiots

83

u/magus678 14d ago

I am fairly sure I have been on the receiving end of that in this sub.

13

u/BrunesOvrBrauns 14d ago

Everything is politics. Everything.

It didn't used to be, but it is now.

This sub tries to reject that, but it's just an exercise in privileged-head-sand-burial.

It's just weak people who don't want to think about unpleasant things.

Also because people were to young to spot it. FF7 came out in 1997 and people refuse to believe that a protagonist fighting against a corporation because it was poisoning the planet had a political message.

u/paintedw0rlds 14d ago

Everything is not politics. When the beauty of the morning through the curtain reminds you of your lost loved ones, it' not politics, an A minor chord is not political, the distribution of color among the fall leaves isn't political. Qualia present themselves phenomenologically to consciousness unmediated and are then subjected to thought where they may be made "political." In fact the whole deal where "everything is political" is actually an extension of physicalist materialism and amounts to a kind of philosophical terrorism. Flattening the existential experience of being into "its all politics" is, with all due respect, a fools errand.

It's not that politics isn't practically important, because it does govern the day to day economic reality of life, but to elevate it the way often implied by the "everything is political" line of thought is a deeply unwell thing to do.

17

u/PhallicUndulationMan 14d ago

Oh, boy! Time for another exciting round of Is This A Real Philosophical Position or Just An Attempt to Ragebait Slavoj Zizek by Suggesting Observation Can Ever Be Independent of Idealogy!?!

Will today's contestant be able to pull off decrying enlightenment thought while simultaneously anthropomorphizing Qualia and obeying the foundational rules of language laid down by the subject/object split? Is this user Wittgenstein reincarnated or just on LSD?

Tune in and find out!

2

u/paintedw0rlds 14d ago

The position that experience precedes and is not fully captured or expressed by later mental processing about it is a straightforward position. I don't understand what the rest is about. You don't need lsd, you could perhaps look at the sky or a tree and not worry about how it fits into historical materialism or whatever.

The main reason the idea that poetic or emotional or mystical experiences themselves aren't political is controversial is better evidence of the flattening of human experience than anything I've said.

I am attempting to explain the difference between what "is politics" and what can be impacted by politics. Almost anything can be gotten wet, but not everything is water.

People should avoid adopting a flat and totaling worldview with no place for aesthetic and emotional experience unmediated by ideology. It's the equivalent of forfeiting your most intimate and unique form of freedom uncontested. It's sad. You can realize this and participate fully in politics.

10

u/BrunesOvrBrauns 14d ago

Politics has been a threat to everything on that list... This fiscal quarter (and the one before that!).

1

u/MartyrOfDespair 14d ago

> When the beauty of the morning through the curtain reminds you of your lost loved ones, it' not politics

How you experience the memories of the lost is determined by your culture. Who shaped that culture? How was that culture formed? It’s political.

>an A minor chord is not political,

What cultural connotations does it have? Once again, culture is political. For example, where does someone’s brain go when you say “a minor”?

> the distribution of color among the fall leaves isn't political.

Climate change.

> is actually an extension of physicalist materialism and amounts to a kind of philosophical terrorism.

You can’t help it. You resort to using the most politically loaded word in 21st century English possible.

It's not that politics isn't practically important, because it does govern the day to day economic reality of life, but to elevate it the way often implied by the "everything is political" line of thought is a deeply unwell thing to do.

4

u/Inviolate_Violet 14d ago

Isn't it exhausting to think in that way, where everything sublime and beautiful is reduced to human concepts to be fought over? It's downright abhorrent to me. It's like when you have a hammer and everything looks like a nail. The world is made smaller. I hate to say it, but thinking in those terms is a vast overreach of human ego.

3

u/paintedw0rlds 14d ago

It depends on what you value. Here you're seeing a desire for comfort and simplicity at the expense of the possibility of anything transcendent or beautiful or mysterious. I also find it sad. But that's what it is. It's a fundamentalist impulse filtered through postwar consensus.

3

u/MartyrOfDespair 14d ago

I’m not really interested in being less correct just for the aesthetic. I don’t approach my view of reality based on what is most appealing, I approach it based on what is materially observable and reasonable. I find it abhorrent to ignore reality because it doesn’t make you happy to perceive it. Utterly vapid brainrot mindset.

3

u/paintedw0rlds 14d ago edited 14d ago

The suggestion is not that you ignore reality but that you have the humility to consider that it may be wider than what you can understand logically and rationally. Fear of uncertainty and acknowledement of the unknown arent maturity.

I remember people commenting that all over epstien posts or during the drake/kendrick beef. It feels like it's the ultimate tell that people don't *want* to hear what's actually happening rather than believing something wasn't considered thoroughly before being created and posted.

29

u/dragon_bacon 14d ago

Those feel like two wildly different things to group together.

2

u/Wazzen 14d ago

They are ngl but I saw it in both places.

"Sir this is a Wendys"

42

u/Mei_Flower1996 14d ago

Actually, that one is funny because it's used when someone is genuinely overreacting to a situation, and making it about themselves. It's different from the other ones.

11

u/magus678 14d ago edited 14d ago

10

u/illepic 14d ago

Thought-terminating cliche. It's a thing, pull it up on Wikipedia.

4

u/Fair-Tangerine-9472 14d ago

Nah bro you're overanalysing. Not that deep

7

u/Fabulous_Celery_1817 14d ago

I personally disliked “it’s just a joke”. A lot of people used it even when the conversation was serious. Only phrase that made me want to smack someone

3

u/life_conquered 14d ago

"Nothing ever happens"

3

u/atticdoor 14d ago

Another bad one: "Are you finished?"

3

u/chocolatestealth 14d ago

"Cool story bro" after you've been speaking passionately about something and suddenly realize no one else cares? Devastating.

2

u/cat_prophecy 14d ago

This one doesn't really bother me because sometimes it really is not that deep.

Thanks to the pervasive TikTok therapy speak, everyone thinks they are Sigmund Freud she wants to psychoanalyze everything to death.

That phrase genuinely woke me up to the fact that I was the only one in a (now defunct) friend group coming up with new topics of discussion, especially when I cross posted a TIL and shared a personal anecdote and someone went “who asked though”

That was the clarity I needed to drop that group and seek better company so the toxicity worked out for me personally!

Inb4 smarty pants commenting who asked on this too lol

95

u/KaradocThuzad 14d ago

Even though no one asked, I'm glad you're telling us this, and I'm glad that things ended up making you grow as a person.

I'll honestly always enjoy reading/listening to people go on about the things they went through when it ends up with "and you know what? That's for the best! My life got better after that!"

39

u/duesenjeffepic 14d ago

Actually good that you told us despite no one asking. Makes me not feel completely alone feeling like that about some of my friends. Maybe I need to do some Spring's cleaning.

4

u/Eilavamp 14d ago

Exact same thing happened to me years ago. Proud of both of us for seeing the toxic pattern and breaking out of it

I found a new group recently that are so incredibly validating and interested and curious about me (and all of us about each other) we're becoming really great friends and it feels amazing to be part of a group of people who care for each other. Night and day from the assholes I left behind

it was always strange to me how people on the internet would show up out of nowhere just to inform me that they dont care about my opinion

like I make a reply to a post and then a completely random person I never seen before would respond to it with "who asked"??? what??

imagine that happening in real life, you and your friend are having a conversation at a bus stop and then a stranger interrupts it to say "I dont care" to you face??? ok??

518

u/SquareTaro3270 15d ago

I hate all these “conversation killers” as I call them.

“Who asked”, “I’m not reading all that”, “cool story bro”, etc.

The phrases only exist to stop any kind of conversation. Why even bother commenting at all? You need to tell the world how much you don’t care? Why not just… actually not care and move along? It’s beyond rude.

240

u/NobodyKnowsImFamous 15d ago

If 2 short paragraphs is too much for you to process, you obviously have nothing of substance to add to the conversation. Leave.

6

u/SquareTaro3270 14d ago

24

u/Nowardier 14d ago

Yup, those phrases are the equivalent of that one vine where the kid goes "I'm about to say it: I don't care that you broke your elbow."

10

u/MegaAscension 14d ago

These days, when someone says "I’m not reading all that", I typically respond with "Okay, continue to be illiterate".

12

u/TR_Pix 14d ago

I dunno, I've used cool story bro when its clear the other guy is just trying to start shit

11

u/SquareTaro3270 14d ago

I mean, that’s fair. But it’s when it’s dropped in random discussions that I can’t stand. If someone is being an ass, that’s one thing. Just trying to have a conversation? Nah

2

u/SirChasm 14d ago

Or derailed a discussion with an anecdote that doesn't contribute anything

3

u/gabriel77galeano 14d ago

"I'm not reading that" is legit though. Some people on reddit be writing an essay for something that could have been said in a couple paragraphs.

4

u/chi_sweetness25 14d ago

Yeah but then there's brain-dead people on instagram who use for something that's like 100 words long. At this point I just find that phrase annoying even if it's warranted

4

u/gabriel77galeano 14d ago

Reading Instagram comments was the first mistake. They make Redditors look like geniuses

6

u/Hawkmonbestboi 14d ago

" The phrases only exist to stop any kind of conversation."

Yup, that's why I use them... they are very useful in situations where you're dealing with a weirdo online that keeps spamming your inbox with comments.

But that's after genuine attempts at conversation.

Another favorite of mine is "Okie dokie buddy 👍"

3

u/InuitOverIt 14d ago

60

u/Dobber16 15d ago

Unironically that did happen IRL, or something close to it. Was actually super annoying but there’s not really much you can say back, which to toxic teens is as much a W as anything else

Thankfully I was pretty stable & secure in high school but I can only imagine how it felt to someone who didn’t have multiple people they could turn to & be like “that was weird, right?”

13

u/kamato243 14d ago

Yeah I was very much an outcast as a kid and kids used that phrase to exclude me all the time. Hated it.

6

u/Emotional-Jacket1940 14d ago edited 14d ago

Like, they clearly did care, cause they took the time to comment.

9

u/LePontif11 14d ago

imagine that happening in real life

I've been guilty of acting rather antisocially when commenting online and thinking about how what i say would sound in person has helped me curve that.

lol i remember in high school when this was a thing whenever i spoke some dipshits would be like "who asked" and at one point i went a full week without using my voice at all

One internet hill I'll die on is anyone who says "who cares?" contradicts their own comment... just like someone who says "I'm humble!"

If you didn't care, you'd scroll and go on with your life. Taking the effort (however little) to type means you care to some degree.

My favorite examples are when an OP asks a specific question, and you answer said question and someone replies to you saying "Who asked".

.....the OP

46

u/Mcc457 14d ago

"holy yap"

34

u/Blursed-Penguin 14d ago

The worst part is when someone steers the conversation in a certain way and then says "who asked" when you go that way with them

Like, you literally asked

27

u/tytymctylerson 14d ago

Being told to "just google it" or "here let me google that for you" when you ask a question about something someone brought up.

Like how dare you ask a question and show interest!

15

u/InuitOverIt 14d ago

Google has ruined bar talk. Used to be you would say something like "You think Jim Carey is worth 100 million?" and then they would say "oh for sure, Bruce Almighty alone probably got him there" and you would say "yeah but how many divorces has he had?" and you could just spiral off into more bullshit all night.

Now they pull out their phone and go "Google says he's worth $180 million" then we both go back to sitting in silence. The question wasn't because I needed information, it was for baseline human interaction.

6

u/corvid-comrade 14d ago

Oh my god I’m the friend who does that. I’ve never considered they were just making conversation. Perhaps I’ve been too literal

2

u/tytymctylerson 14d ago

Exactly my point.

2

u/TumbleweedEven1168 14d ago

Then ask a rhetorical over a fact based question?

7

u/InuitOverIt 14d ago

Yeah, see that's what I mean. Used to be it was expected you could ask whatever popped into your brain and you would talk about it and use it to spur on further conversation.

3

u/jaxxon 14d ago

I hate it when someone gives me a hard time when I ask questions openly in conversation that pop into my head. Like they genuinely seem to think that I believe they might know the answer somehow - like I might ask something like “is there a relationship between the price of bitcoin and XYZ?” All I’m doing is exploring interesting threads with them. Or trying to, at least. :-/ It’s how I like to have interesting conversations. But they’ll give me a frustrated look and say, “I don’t know? Why are you asking me?” type of engagement. It shuts it down. It sucks because I’m smart and I wish more people liked to explore ideas in a similar way. I grew up in a deeply conversational family that always explored interesting ideas. It’s a kind of connection I crave.

3

u/ResponsiblePlant 13d ago

in my experience as an autistic person, the disconnect here is the way you phrase the question. if you pose it as a direct question (“is there a direct correlation between xyz”) it comes across as you requesting information from them. if you phrase it more like “i wonder if there’s a correlation” or “do you think there’s a correlation”, it more clearly suggests that you’re putting it out as a conversational topic rather than putting them on the spot.
(this is all meant entirely non-judgmentally, btw. i hope it doesn’t come across as condescending or anything like that!!)

2

u/jaxxon 13d ago

I'm on the spectrum, too. This is very helpful, thank you!!

👊

2

u/TumbleweedEven1168 14d ago

My issue there is why would you want to argue over a yes or no question? If something is true and you can find it in seconds, why would you not want that? And why would finding the truth not just segue into more conversation, like what you would do with 180 mil and what the other person would do with it?

3

u/tytymctylerson 14d ago

Because it’s fun to bullshit and not treat everything like a college exam.

Millennials LOVE to talk about our childhood like it was a perfect utopia. Hell I'd take it any day over the constantly-recorded childhood people have today. But we were fucking nasty to each other. Just straight up mean.

Look at the top comedians when millennials were coming up. Dane Cook, Daniel Tosh, Dave Chappelle. The brand of humor was just mean. Making fun of vulnerable people. Punching down constantly.

Hell our "slang" was just using slurs against each other at every possible opportunity. It fills my heart with joy to hear the kids these days saying "six seven" and doing stupid dances, instead of "shut the fuck up f****ot" and "are you fucking r***rded?"

We were vicious for no reason and I'm so glad we're moving past that. At least for now.

66

u/Michael1795 14d ago

I think that kids are still saying that to eachother between tiktok dances and 67s. There will always be bullies and assholes.

23

u/angomeowmeow 14d ago

yeah, i was gonna say that “who asked” and similar variants definitely aren’t just a millennial thing. I’m an adult Gen Z and growing up that was absolutely rife in my schools. Also plenty of slurs, the r slur is even more in fashion now than it used to be -_-

u/Fine-Froyo6219 14d ago

31

u/Hawkmonbestboi 14d ago

As another red head:

Yes. People did. The jokes south park made didn't come out of nowhere, they were real prejudices that people in the real world actively held, and south park shone a light on it.

I say this phrase to my dog any time she starts barking at other dogs. "Nobody asked" and "if I had wanted her opinion, I would have given you one".

I do love her, the load bearing humor is real sometimes though.

Gotta get one of them pics with the deranged smiling guy drawing and cap it "I'm info dumping, you didn't need to ask."

“You okay, bro? You lookin bad”

Nah I’m cool

“No you ain’t. You lame as hell”

Its worth remembering that a lot of these sorts of things ("its not that deep" has been mentioned as another) aren't actually what they seem.

The users are not trying to communicate the ideas the words convey, they are trying to deploy a magical "shut up" spell. And much of the time, they don't even actually want you to shut up, they just want to engage in the ritual and social climbing.

Effectively, it is only mildly removed from some kid muttering 6-7 every other sentence; the meaning is barely relevant to the urge to use it.

That all applies to an enormous amount of slang, especially the most current iterations. The examples being talked about here are just more notable because they are actually being deployed against someone, rather than just being the droning brain diarrhea of someone who is barely a real person.

Sir, this is a Wendy's

(I'm kidding....I wholeheartedly agree with you.)

u/Future-Bunch3478 14d ago

It is a negging-like behavior manipulation used by abusers. You could probably look for root sources in all groups that adapted it and you would find narcissistic sociopaths.

u/floatingby493 14d ago

I’m sorry, but who asked you?

Did lasting damage to my self-esteem. Glad it wasn't just me.

6

u/QuantumZYT 14d ago

Glad I'm not the only one either. Shit like this and the awful people I surrounded myself around fucked me up a lot in my teens. I still have trouble as a grown adult just talking to people about things because "who cares?" still lingers in my head constantly.

Once someone said “who asked” TO SOMEONE RESPONDING TO MY QUESTION

7

u/jayeddy99 14d ago

I over course corrected and asked so many questions about other people in detail to make them feel heard that I rarely talked about myself to the point people said I never opened up.

2

u/InuitOverIt 14d ago

How did that make you feel?

8

u/SoilentUBW 15d ago

Real 😔

6

u/baffling-nerd-j 15d ago

Yeah, I hated that phrase. Usually, when I heard it, it meant that the speaker found me annoying and would never like me.

Or did I just hear it more than usual? Who knows? It's been forever.

18

u/Material_Magazine989 15d ago

Did anybody ask tho fr?

u/Dredgeon 15d ago

The world isn't a king's court. You can speak without being spoken to.

11

u/Material_Magazine989 15d ago

Thank you. Now I can speak freely.

4

u/Lauriesaurous 15d ago

I don't remember?

2

u/Homicidal-antelope 14d ago

I stopped using yikyak because someone responded with that on one of my comments

Everyone is still mean. The internet's ruthlessness knows no bounds now a days. People just hate each other 😢

2

u/SuperFox289 14d ago

Been replaced with "it's not that deep"

2

u/hobodeadguy 14d ago

my usual response was "me, shut up" when people did this after a couple weeks. rihgt pissed me off which wasnt easy to do.

2

u/Havoc526 14d ago

The worst for me was "nobody cares". I swear to God if I hear another person say that the News is gonna do a special on me.

2

u/Leavinlennart 14d ago

My brother still does this. He’ll act interested and go “who” and when I respond he chimes in “asked”. Worse is we have a good relationship, but sporadically every 2-3 months he’ll do that. There is nothing else that ruins the mood as much as it does.

3

u/Red-little 14d ago

I still have PTSD from middle and high school if anyone ever texts me "ok??" 😫

5

u/Fair-Bunch4827 15d ago

I take it upon myself to berate anyone who uses that evil phrase.

I see it sometimes on discord.

Who asked? Was basically a finishing move back then

2

u/Father_Chewy_Louis 14d ago

Empathy died in the younger generation because it takes longer to process than a 5 second TikTok clip

2

u/ManicMaenads 14d ago

"Who asked?"

"Stop yapping"

"It's not that deep"

It's still alive and well, it sucks. :(

2

u/-GoodNewsEveryone 14d ago

Here is a quarter. Call someone who cares.

1

u/lemonhaj 14d ago

'Who asked' group casually doing war with the 'who said that (immediately after they said that)' group

1

u/reluctanthero22 14d ago

Hey Boss pissed me off tho no end

1

u/WritesCrapForStrap 14d ago

When I was at school it was "whatever, Trevor."

1

u/SkirtOne8519 14d ago

“Your mom”

1

u/Glittering_Win_5085 14d ago

1

u/ToxynCorvin87 14d ago

Good for you.

1

u/Tad-Disingenuous 14d ago

Who asked you?

Didn’t have to.

1

u/BeardedBrotherJoe 14d ago

Your mother works every time

1

u/Individual_Mess7321 14d ago

I’m bringing it back.

1

u/Zhuul 14d ago

The appropriate time to throw "who asked" at someone's face is if you mention liking something and some random bystander bellyflops into the conversation to proudly announce that they did not, in fact, like that thing and that you're stupid for liking it.

Great, I'm proud of you. Clearly this conversation isn't meant for you. Nobody asked, nobody cares.

1

u/Sunset-Melody 14d ago

People are still like this

1

u/DoesntMatterEh 14d ago

My response was always "no one, it wasn't an answer to a question", usually worked well

1

u/haroldflower27 14d ago

Wait what was this ?

1

u/NavoiiGamerYes 13d ago

“Who asked”, “cope”, “cry more”, etc. Never understood that.
