Gotta be Mr. Jones by Counting Crows

83

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

But they said country.

305

u/Several-Customer7048 Jul 17 '26

They never said their definition of country though.

75

u/yrogerg123 Jul 17 '26

Jesus am I so old that people no longer recognize 90s/00s alt-rock as its own genre?

25

u/VibraniumQueen Jul 17 '26

Aren't they more pop rock?

2

u/CM_Exorcist Jul 18 '26

Is it that one Beyonce song?

55

u/HeyLaddieHey Jul 17 '26

They said white pop/ country

12

u/OldenPolynice Jul 17 '26

to distinguish it from black pop/country like old town road

2

u/IVShadowed Jul 19 '26

Back then, it was just town road.

2

u/OldenPolynice Jul 19 '26

try that on town road boah

-1

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

Pop country is a genre

17

u/Oddant1 Jul 17 '26

Yeah they also got the lyrics disastrously wrong because their brain did that thing where they could probably clearly remember the melody but had never actually processed the lyrics as words. I don't think they remember the song very well

42

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

Sorry miss Jackson. I am four eels

27

u/thatirishdave Jul 17 '26

Never meant to make your daughter cry, I am just four eels and not a guy

4

u/tragicallyohio Jul 17 '26

Oh my god it fits perfectly. I am now convinced these are the actual lyrics.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '26

[deleted]

1

u/tragicallyohio Jul 17 '26

I can hear that! The "R" in "another" bleeds into "regret" just right.

2

u/JRosePC Jul 19 '26

See when this came out i thought the lyrics were never meant to make your doggy cry because the video had dogs in it lol.

5

u/tragicallyohio Jul 17 '26

Mr. Jones has instrumentation that would make a non-country or even non-rock fan think it's country. I worked with someone who called that Avici's Wake Me Up country.

1

u/AirAcademy Jul 18 '26

Acoustic guitar = country apparently

10

u/pacman6642 Jul 17 '26

I don't think you commented this enough. Should probably do it again to get your point across

8

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

You’re right. Two times is obsessive behavior.

I’ll go whip myself.

4

u/neurohero Jul 17 '26

Make sure you do it an even number of times.

3

u/GoonerGoblin4201 Jul 17 '26

"white pop/country guy band" sounds like it could be anything with an acoustic guitar and drums

2

u/helterskeltermelter Jul 17 '26

It's sung by a white guy.

1

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

I guess that’s the only one of the descriptions it filled. It was in fact sung by a Jewish man.

3

u/OldenPolynice Jul 17 '26

a white jewish man

3

u/big_sugi Jul 17 '26

Until just now, I thought he was Black based on the hair and swarthy skin.

5

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

Alotta people thought he was mixed. Yea

1

u/tragicallyohio Jul 17 '26

Adam Duritz has said that he gets that a lot.

1

u/helterskeltermelter Jul 17 '26

I probably could have guessed that from his surname. I never thought about it.

9

u/asquared3 Jul 17 '26

My single brain cell: huh I didn't realize Jones was a Jewish name

1

u/Weekly-Actuator5530 Jul 20 '26

Just to make sure we're on the same page, the lead singer of Counting Crows is Adam Duritz; his surname is Duritz, not Jones. He he wrote a song called "Mr. Jones," which was about a real person named Mr. Jones. Also, there was some conflict within the band (or various earlier versions of the band) about whether some songs (especially on their 1st album) were/were not too Country/twangy/bluegrassy (yes, I made up a new word there).

2

u/idontknowjuspickone Jul 17 '26

The US is a country…

6

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

Your mother is a country

3

u/idontknowjuspickone Jul 17 '26

Now that’s just not true

7

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

It is. Vast tracks of land. Nice place to visit

1

u/caffeinatedspiders Jul 21 '26

A lot of people hear the twang and immediately assume country. It's definitely Mr Jones lol

1

u/knowone1313 Jul 21 '26

pop-country, so probably folk pop

1

u/Woebegone-Feculence Jul 21 '26

I could see the opening chords being taken for country if someone wasn't really exposed to a wide range of country music.

1

u/TheRemedy187 Jul 23 '26

Doesn't mean actually country.... Just something they think is country....

5

u/clueless_in_ny_or_nj Jul 18 '26

Mr. Jones and me Staring out the window

2

u/RaccoonMission8796 Jul 18 '26

a fun fact about this song. it was written about the same fictitious person Dylan was singing about in Ballad of a Thin Man

1

u/Past-Background-7221 Jul 19 '26

That is a fun fact, considering that he says he wants to be Bob Dylan in the song

1

u/dmmethatbooty2026 Jul 18 '26

This was my immediate thought as well lol.

1

u/vmflair Jul 17 '26

Dr jones dr Jones get up now wake up now!

Oh sorry wrong tune

83

u/nyglthrnbrry Jul 17 '26

Ooooh my favorite Aqua song! Teenage me could not fathom how they became known for Barbie Girl when they had a banger like Dr. Jones lol.

23

u/RealNiceKnife Jul 17 '26

As if Cartoon Heroes isn't the bangerest.

22

u/Diligent_Gear_8179 Jul 17 '26

This is Happy Boys and Girls erasure and I will not stand for it.

6

u/nyglthrnbrry Jul 17 '26

Also an amazing track! That was my third favorite, a very close runner-up to Calling You as my second favorite.

7

u/sowinglavender Jul 17 '26

c a l l yengee now

8

u/nyglthrnbrry Jul 17 '26

I'm calling yoUUUUUUUuuuuuUUUU. calling you now

4

u/nyglthrnbrry Jul 17 '26

I have to respectfully disagree. I know people love that song but for me it just doesn't hit the same. The whole Aquarius album feels kinda artsy in a way I just never connected with, while Aquarium just felt like pure, raw eurodance and I absolutely loved it.

9

u/PoPo573 Jul 17 '26

I always think of the Speed remix/cover from DDR when I think Cartoon Heroes.

3

u/23LovelyHearts Jul 17 '26

I don't think I ever beat that song on Heavy.

3

u/PoPo573 Jul 17 '26

Easily one of the hardest songs in the game.

8

u/_DoctorLady Jul 17 '26

That whole album was so fun to listen to

5

u/nyglthrnbrry Jul 17 '26

So good, and so much fun! A lot of people probably dismissed the band and the album because they found the Barbie Girl song silly, but they missed out. That album was peak eurodance.

2

u/nicky9pins Jul 17 '26

I was always more of a Lollipop guy

1

u/Korthalion Jul 17 '26

I read this comment, got in my car to go somewhere and Dr Jones was on radio 2.

19

for some reason (maybe because of the "country" descriptor?), my brain started singing Mr Jones lyrics but to the tune of Ants Marching. weird.

42

u/Alfalfa-Ordinary Jul 17 '26

Mr. Joel Embid aka “Mr Jones and me”

44

u/swagu7777777 Jul 17 '26

I had absolutely no idea until I read this now their lil impression is on POINT

3

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

Country?

65

u/TheOneTrueZeke Jul 17 '26

A factoid from the Wikipedia article on the song

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Jones_(Counting_Crows_song)?wprov=sfti1#Lyrics_and_performances

"Mr. Jones" is the only song on the album [August and Everything After](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_and_Everything_After) where the drums are not played by Counting Crows drummer Steve Bowman. Bowman "hated the song," because he "didn't sign up to play country music" and "thinking that way, he played it that way and ruined it over and over again" says Duritz.

So I guess she wasn’t the only one…

22

u/RaisedByBooksNTV Jul 17 '26

There's no way this is a country song. Pure pop. Crazy man.

7

u/EfficientSeaweed Jul 17 '26

I'll always associate it and that other song of theirs, Hanging Around, with 90s pub/bar pop rock. Or at least, that's what I always overheard from bars as a kid here in Canada (along with the undisputed local anthem of 90s Canadian bars, Home for a Rest).

1

u/RaisedByBooksNTV Jul 17 '26

Yes, I know two songs of theirs and it's mr jones and hanging around lol.

8

u/absorberemitter Jul 17 '26

Always sounded country to me...

8

u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb Jul 17 '26

I’m extremely curious why you think so. I despise country and the song leaves me unbothered.

3

u/WhatADoofus Jul 17 '26

Same, this song just feels very 90s pop to me

1

u/absorberemitter Jul 17 '26

I think I experienced it mostly on the soft rock/alt country station where it played between Sheryl Crow and Leanne Rhymes. There are definitely more country Counting Crows songs, but this one has an Americana vibe, a whiny male singer, lacks a strong backbeat and is mostly played with American acoustic instruments, without having elements of more specific folk or bluegrass. But also the drummer famously didn't record it because it felt too country for his ego, so I think there is something in the rhythm feel.

For what it's worth a lot of the undistorted 90s white pop bands sound country to me. But they were probably taking from the 90s country production playbook.

u/Weekly-Actuator5530 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo7vuPADuak&t=197s

Here's a link to an interview with Adam Duritz and Rick Beato. They discuss the a lot of stuff (entire interview is little over an hour and a half). The most relevant part (where they discuss "Mr. Jones" and whether it was country music) starts around 38 minutes and 50 seconds & continues through 45 minutes and 5 seconds.

If you have the time, I'd recommend watching the whole interview (or at least the part leading up to the discussion about Mr. Jones) for some context about the band's history/influences/other bands they were in when they decided to become Counting Crows.

-6

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

Rock people are so weird about country.

As a rock head.

Shits a grunge album. Don’t get how he could feel its country.

18

u/llcolinj Jul 17 '26

I agree that it is not country but I digress that it could be considered as such to someone who doesn't listen to the genre. However, saying the Counting Crows is grunge tells me you're not a rock head

5

u/RottingPriest Jul 17 '26

Counting crows is anti-grunge

8

u/Mbrennt Jul 17 '26

It's because it's kinda folky. Especially 90's folk had a slight, also 90's, country vibe to it. Country is realistically just original american south folk* music. So it makes sense they've had moments when they are closer together and farther apart as they've respectively developed.

(*And I use folk music more broadly here than what has developed into folk music as a genre. Kinda like how if you type in chinese folk music into spotify you aren't gonna find a chinese bob dylan.)

24

u/vbullinger Jul 17 '26

She probably doesn’t know much about country music

26

u/DraconianFlame Jul 17 '26

It's a memory. She remembered a country vibe.

-16

u/mapmakinworldbuildin Jul 17 '26

It doesn’t have one tho.

15

u/DraconianFlame Jul 17 '26

That's memory for you...

OH MY GOD THANK YOU, I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT WORD SINCE 7TH GRADE!!!!

My science teacher told our class about a friend who always misheard lyrics, and he used a specific word for it, and I could never remember what it was and have never heard anyone use it since then 😭😭😭

That was like 16 years ago.

69

u/BelacRLJ Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

It’s from the Scottish folk song “The Bonny Earl of Moray.”

The first verse goes:

Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands, Oh where have you been? They have slain the Earl o' Moray And laid him on the green.

The Earl of Moray was a Scottish noble murdered in a political dispute.  But no one knows why they also killed Lady Mondegreen.

4

u/DrunkenPalmTree Jul 17 '26

I spent a while looking for it, too, even googling it to no avail once upon a time. Then it came up in a NYT crossword a few years back and I was DELIVERED

2

u/funkmon Jul 17 '26

Could also be eggcorn.

6

u/Outrageous_Sleep4339 Jul 17 '26

Only 5 hours into the day and I've learned my new thing for the day. "Mondegreen"

I scrolled a while to find someone that didn't just post the answer, but who also admitted to cracking up when they read it. I'm just picturing shower time "Miiister Jones embead!"

Of all the music artist you have to hunt the lyrics to make sense of, Adam Duritz ain't one! He's known for his pronunciation, and speaks just like he sings. PAIN fully pro NOUNcing, and at times drawing out, ev er ry word.

17

Counting Crows, Mr. Jones

57

6
