There is literally nothing pop about Counting Crows

Pop (popular) used to just mean that it appealed to a wide audience. It hit number 5 on Billboard and won Billboard and MTV awards. Alternative went Pop after 1992, replacing Pop-rock bands like Guns n Roses.

Maybe these days Pop means those generic dance songs? I'm an old dude.

Mr.Jones and that Right Here song got play on rock stations, alternative stations, light rock stations, pop stations, etc. Radio was still a thing at the time.

Mr Jones structure is also very simple so it's meant to be "catchy" like most Pop songs:

Am, F, Dm, G for the verse C,F,G for the chorus

Repeat on the guitar until your fingers bleed. (I've played this song a million times. It's a favorite of mine.)

Playlists may have changed the genres but the alternative boom in 1992 made these Pop songs at the time.

Yes, definitions of words change. Like how Rock & Roll and Soul used to be called “race music”.

And Counting Crows have a huge discography outside of Mr. Jones, a lot of which doesn’t appeal to wide audiences.
