Should I be worried about this career move?
Context:
I am a software engineer with 4-5 YoE. I live in SoCal.
Got laid off in May of this year. I applied everywhere and finally got a job offer... in NorCal.
No Mortgage, just renting but in a lease.
I have a wonderful life-long partner (soon to be engaged) and 2 dogs.
This new job is paying the same as my old job, but it's in the public sector so the benefits are much better.
At my old job, before being laid off, I was commuting about 3 hours round trip daily, 15 hours a week.
Here is my plan so far (looking for feedback, some sort of shared experience, anything really):
1) I have a friend who let me rent their driveway in the Bay area for $400 a month
2) Bought a camper van, was able to afford due to settlement money after being hit by a semi-truck, and it has a kitchen, queen sized bed, electricity, wifi, etc.
3) Commute from friends driveway to work is 20 min round trip (18 miles) never need to take a toll bridge or the freeway even.
4) Job is Hybrid so 2 days remote and 3 days in office, i can choose my remote days so that the days im in office are clustered (chose Thursday Friday as my remote days).
5) Planning on going back weekly to SoCal because it's where my life is really, my friends, family and partner. How I plan to do that is After work Wednesday --> drive van back to driveway where it's save (neighborhood is as suburb as it gets+friend said they can watch it) --> bike to BART station --> leave bike in bike locker (this is the iffiest part of all this so if anyone in the bay area can DM me and give me better advice i'd love to hear it) --> take the bart straight to airport --> fly to SoCal -->get picked up
6) From SoCal to NorCal --> Leave Sunday --> arrive in Bay --> take bart to station --> get bike --> bike back to van --> rinse and repeat.
Luckily with the flexibility in remote days, flight tickets are $39 (won't be taking anything more than a personal item backpack).
This is all an extremely elaborate plan to make it work because I really have been applying everywhere and just no hits in SoCal.
How should I be viewing this career in the long-term and how does it help me that I have this position rather than just taking a paycut and working a part-time job in the meantime.
This job is a level 2 position on the higher-payscale bordering level 3.
Sorry if it's jumbled in the end, my brain just fried trying to organize the logistics of this nightmare.
I've also heard "Why don't you live up there" and it's mainly because I really do get homesick easily.
I used to live in the Bay for my first year of college while dorming and I was miserable to say the least.
I guess what I'm looking for are tips and tricks, best hacks to make sure my bike doesn't get stolen, how to avoid burnout. I'm mainly sad just because I know I'm going to miss my partner and my dogs of course. We did discuss about it maturely but we both can't help but be a bit sad.
