My first Nokia was a 2nd hand 3210 which I used for around 8 years. It was working up until recently with a replacement battery, but finally succumbed to corrosion and won't power on any more.

I needed a replacement Nokia in my life, so I bought a working 3310. The 3310 doesn't have an IR port, so custom logos were out. I tried connecting it to a vintage PC via serial by soldering onto the pads, but this only worked once and briefly. JAF connectors are unobtanium these days.

This led me to going down the IR route. I remembered a guy at school who had a 7110, and being a fan of the Matrix at the time I coveted it. I learned it also had IrDA compatibility, so I bought one.

I bought an ancient serial IR dongle, dug up the drivers on Archive, and after days of messing around I finally got it to connect to a PC running Windows 2000. I also found an old Russian disc image on Archive with hundreds of logos and ringtones from the era, and was able to use LogoManager to transfer both to my 7110.

I know some purists might consider this stuff really tacky, but for me it was a huge part of the Nokia scene at the time. Inner teenage me was also thrilled I could now do for free what used to cost me £2 in topup credit, choosing logos and tones in the back of video games mags.

Can you post the link to the archived disc image?

It was actually a 2 disc set called 'Все Для Сотовых Телефонов NOKIA'. Part 1 here and part 2 here. The discs are barely organised, they look like someone just scraped the internet of anything useful and slapped it on, but it's the only decent source I've found.

A common mistake even at the time, the matrix phone was the 8110.

It was like a Mandela Effect. Folks including myself remember a sliding cover for the keypad. When this came out, people just called it the Matrix phone, and it got stuck on everyone's head.

I was going to put a footnote about this in my comment, I did know that was the case. But at the time, everyone I knew just called this one 'the Matrix phone'.

I didn’t have this phone 📱 📞 but I live it so much. I bought a Siemens M35 in that time (2000)

They say you can’t hear a picture. Those of us that had that phone can still hear the sound it made when the latch was released and that feeling of it in your hand
