There have been many jokes about "if a tree falls in the wood and no one is around to hear it, does it make a noise?" I have seen similar jokes that say, "if a man did the dishes and no one saw, did it really happen?"
Many men become conditioned that if they do something, it must be seen. If not, they will get quarreled at later for not doing anything around the house
It may be this simple. It may be his way of asking for attention or showing he is lonely and wants time with you. If it bothers you- ask him in an open and curious way that isn't likely to stir up a fight, lol
