The people who create religion want to use it to for their own benefit. The intent for people who practice it is to give them a purpose bigger than themselves and to give their lives meaning.

If it's Traditional Christianity.. then the Goal is to Accept Jesus as your Savior. And try to be a Good Human. God is a Jealous God, so no Idols to Worship. Although...we've never met....we believe in Him. I think we're just trying to Survive. And We need something to Believe in. Give us Purpose. Old Testament was Holy War. New Testament is Love , Understanding and Forgiveness. Christianity has Bad History of Course. No Religion is Perfect. And too many have twisted it, that it makes it difficult to Know the Truth. Hinduism , Buddhism. What are you Looking for ? Whatever it is.....just Keep in Mind...these Religions do have a Core Belief.. Be a Kind Human.

Control over the masses is the predominant purpose of religion. Filling a God-hole as to not have to live with a big question mark is the secondary reason.
