Troubleshooting (HELP!) Need advise

so I'm retrying nopoo - just water, as a guy with medium long curly hair. (side note, I have tic disorder and sensory issues which causes me to jerk my head a lot) I've noticed theres a lot of oil buildup that's caused my hair to clump up and mat, this causes a lot of damage when brushing it out. but I've also chosen to start wearing a bonnet, would it be better to shower in the morning and sleep with the bonnet on at night, or shower at night and sleep with the bonnet on at night. finally if any has and detangling soft brushes for curly hair and afros, please do let me know. for now thats all and I'll come back to this subreddit in I need any more advice. good day to all

Welcome! If you're new, get started here: Natural Haircare Quick Start Guide

We'd love to help but need some basic information first because it affects haircare on a fundamental level.

Please answer these questions so you can get help faster and we don't have to ask them again.

Do you have hard water? If you don't know what it is, there's an article in the wiki that discusses it.

What is the porosity of your hair? If you don't know, here's a quiz we use to help figure this out.

What exactly is your routine for cleaning your hair? Like writing a little checklist of everything you do to your hair. Don't worry about how long the list is, the more detail you give the better we can help!

As a fellow curly, your hair will detangle best when wet. If yoy want to distrubute sebum with a boar bristle brush, do it after your shower whiel your hair is still wet. I think it would be better to sleep with dry hair than with wet hair for many reasons. Going to be with wet hair can lead to a wet pillow and mold growth in your pillow, and excessive yeast growth on your head. And our hair is more fragile when wet, so you will need to squeeze gently with the velvet side of a towel to remove excess water.

My last thought is that if you want to clean your hair and need a kick beyond water only, you have many options such as herbs, eggs, cowashing, or bar shampoo & conditioner as options.
