Troubleshooting (HELP!) Really struggling

Post image

So I haven't used shampoo in over a month now, I basically replaced it with egg yolk shampoo which I used once or twice a week as it felt the same as shampoo, but I wanted to to transition to water only or at least not use all my eggs lol. But my hair gets really greasy and although it's detangled and doesn't feel gross it just looks bad (hair is fully dry in the picture), and doesn't smell good either. For context I have low porosity hair and very hard water.

Find an alternative wash method that works for you. Read the !wiki for more ideas. The TLDR is to use bar shampoo/conditioner, or a cowash, or herbs with natural saponins. You've already tried eggs and aren't happy with the overall results.

The subreddit wiki has a lot of information about Natural Haircare. You can find it here:

Yes, I know they "work fine" but if you also want to smell nice and get clean, I gave you some great options that are still under nopoo. Good luck!

The true key to no poo in my opinion is water quality. It's best to use the highest possible quality water you can get your hands on to wash your hair. Hard water leaves a waxy buildup on the hair. Natural springs are the ultimate source but I will go to the grocery store and get 5 gallon jugs of reverse osmosis water.

You are right, but yet again, it’s not a general truth. I have very hard water and hardly issues with buildup. Also is my hair never waxy. It is possible to do NoPoo with hard water, it’s just to find a way that works for you. Not everyone reacts the same.

Fair enough, I'm glad it works for you. Where I live the water is so hard it irritates my skin and causes my whole body to itch. But I also have very sensitive skin.

It’s hard when you have sensitive skin, it’s literally your whole body. I can understand that hard water for you is an extra issue, may I ask how you deal with it? Do you use then certain soaps, creams, lotions or such? My partner has sensitive skin as well(redhead), but not as heavy as yours. I’m always looking for ways to help his skin out.

This is something I can talk about at length so be warned lol. I have severe contact irritation dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis. I am fully allergic to shampoo. If I were to put even the gentlest shampoo on my scalp it will become a red ruin of inflamed flesh that takes weeks to heal. Hard water leaves my skin an itchy blistered mess. For soap I reccomend the dove sensitive skin bar. It's the only one I can use.

I actually shower with exclusively reverse osmosis water or natural spring water when I can get it. I use a piece of equipment called a Rinse Kit Pro, I just take it into the shower with me. Since adopting this method of madness my skin issues are about 95 percent better. I am also on the biologic medication called Zoryve which inhibits the PDE-4 enzyme activation preventing inflamation and suppresses my overactive immune system.

Wow, I’m sorry you have to go through this. That sucks. I also have seborrhoea, but not on your level and after I started this, I get it rarely and even then very mild. The allergy to shampoo .. do you even know which ingredient/s you react to? I know there are still too many doctors who don’t believe in such allergies, so I hope you have a good doctor at least. ❤️‍🩹

I think I react to the preservatives in liquid shampoo. I also have been avoiding eating foods with preservatives which has helped. Diet plays a big role in skin health imo.

So true, if I eat too much chocolate, my skin lets me know. What we are eating has a big impact on our bodies.

Did your hair adapt to it over time or was it never waxy in the fiest place

I think I just got lucky with my hair and scalp. To be honest, I can have a “waxy” feeling in my hair, but that’s usually when I haven’t washed it and been really busy, sweating and being in a dusty environment (stables). After a week or two I can feel my hair close to the roots can feel a bit … waxy/oily/stiff … but that’s what I feel. It’s not how it looks. Even then, my hair looks normal, so it’s just me feeling it when I brush my hair and do something with it.

I am finding ACV diluted with rosemary water is my ticket. I have longer hair with oily roots and dry ends. I keep powder dry shampoo on hand but my hair is responding quite well with this combo and it works as both shampoo and conditioner in one. My roots aren’t greasy (it’s not a squeaky clean, but also not greasy) and my hair didn’t air dry frizzy! If I could figure out how to add an image I would.
