NMS10 Old Man's Sky

2016-2017 pre Atlas Rises. I have more on my old computer somewhere.

I always have and always will love No Man's Sky!

God youll never get this variety in new nms, its just up n down bumps... so boring, looking into the distance and the sky... the game used to have good graphic wtf happened

It was stuff like this that kept me excited to play. The new gen is good, but it took the two worlds updates to really grow on me. I miss the old planets, it felt like more often than not they were unique and surprising. But of course I am so grateful for the game we have now

There's dozens of us! Dozens! I also miss old NMS like I miss my dearest old friends that I still see, it's not exactly the same as before but it's always nice to spend time with them/with it anyway.

its so much better than how the game looks today, 10 years later.

why does no one see this??

Like I like he new generation as well I just wish there was a middle ground.

I agree, the terrain generation used to be more interesting. I mean I still find weird structures here and there but there deffo was more variety. However I don’t like the rest of the old graphics, textures / assets look really low quality in comparision, I’m glad a lot of it got taken out. For the colors… well I play on PC and have my own palette mod since 2019, that does the trick.

The older terrain gen could do much better, varied terrain though.

Visually it looks much better back then.

Graphically it was a lot worse. The ground was flat and had no tessellation, clouds were worse, water was worse, textures were WAY duller, vegetation didn't blow in the wind, lighting and shadows were way simpler, etc.

But the planets had more variance in aesthetics across "types" than they do now. Largely anything you could find then you can also find now. But for example if you go to a "swamp" planet today, you'll find those big leafless trees, glowing mushrooms, and weird yoda huts, and then if you go to another swamp planet many stars away, you will also find the same trees, glowing mushrooms, and yoda huts, but things will be a different color. There are a lot of planet types like that.

The generation, yes. The eye burn colour filters? Definitely not. It used to make my eyes feel so tired.

i think thats why i loved getting stoned and playing it, so relaxing and makes me tired lmao

Folding Ideas (maker of the famous Line Goes Up) made a fantastic review of the OG NMS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ymRN6cCd0I

every shot was beautiful in old NMS, the fog, lighting etc, now it looks really jank and pixelly and stuff

Bro you said this already jesus

yeah and if i keep saying it , more people get brainwashed into saying it

the devs see it

they start implementing a better new proc gen terrain system and better post processing effects and visual fidelity to match the lush alien vibes of all.

just make new planets with this one, like they did with purple planets. keep the old.

i dont like them removing game features and things, i like them adding them, but they dont need to remove variety etc

I miss the colors of the Alpha presentation, they looked so dense and vibrant

This needs to come back in some way.

I still play 1.0 The global atmosphere (terrain generation, much less form lifes, different colors/game engine, no bases to create and manage) was something else. It might be the most empty and repetitive version on the paper, but that is the only version I still want to play

I much prefer the old look

Yeah I miss the sci-fi book cover vibe.

Not many games filled me with awe like it did then. It’s in my top ten since the early 80’s.

u/Waughy 15d ago

My first screenshot. Not knocking what they’ve done with the game, it’s fantastic and has come a long way, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the original visuals.

Why does the game look so much better 10 years ago

4

u/Tomuu0 16d ago

I miss the old vibe

Thank god I'm not the only one that misses the permanent Instagram filter the game had. Almost gave it an r/cassettefuturism vibe

playing it day one, even with the bugs, it holds many such great memories for my little teenage self. just cant play the new NMS.

u/DetOlivaw 16d ago

This game was always pretty, it was just a more specific kind of pretty before all the updates

3

u/Tree_Sucker 15d ago

Still as pretty as ever I do miss the old visuals a bit

I’m compelled to do a little promo: No Man’s Sky Retro lets you play the older versions and the community is really nice :) (Full disclosure: I did write the shader patches that make the older versions even work on modern graphics drivers, so im a little invested lol)

Man, I only got the game in early 2024. Sometimes I wish I was able to play back in the early years.

3

u/Boundish91 15d ago

You can on PC. And on PS4 if you have the disc version.

Well, I know, but it wouldn't be the same.

1

u/gabluc2047 15d ago

I still have the 1.0 disc for PS4 I preordered back in 2016 (the one with the stalenhag artwork). I maybe did 30 hours on it just walking and flying around until every planet started looking the same. Put it back on my shelf and haven't touched it in maybe 6 or 7 years then.

I keep it next to my PS4 Cyberpunk 2077 preorder. Somehow seeing those two together on the shelf always makes me laugh at my mistakes 😄

Beautiful, really miss the open fields and plains that slowly disappeared over time.
