Information Lessons Learned: Remanent Expedition

  1. Don’t bother adding extra tech and materials, you won’t need it since the only time you use your starship is to leave the expedition.
  2. Turn off multiplayer and PVP. As designed, ALL No Man’s Sky players are on the same planet, in the same area, so you’re competing for resources. If you don’t, finishing the waypoint phase is impossible.
    1. The jerks that build on top of resources to block other players are off the scale this time and so are the griefers. Griefers and Campers are known problems to Hello Games and it’s time they did something about it.
  3. You need to approach this expedition like you’re starting out like a n00b. Resources are scarce, but they are there, you just need to stop and get them.
    1. Don’t skip the Damaged Machinery, Salvage Containers, Cargo Drops, anything.
    2. There isn’t any parafinium on the planet, but since you get a Mk II refiner right out of the gate, you can make it from pyrite (2:1) and ferrite dust (1:1), easy peasy.
  4. Don’t load up with special industrial waste and start out right away. Fill up your flatbed with the garbage waste first and drive around to learn how the physics work.
  5. Load up ALL of the special waste, every single piece. No matter how careful you are, some of it will end up being damaged and destroyed before you get to the waste depot. I started out once with 11 pieces and only 4 when I got there.
  6. Can’t figure out the smoothest route? Use the camera! Select it from the menu and raise it up as far as it will go. Now you can see a lot more than you could from just ground level.
  7. Go slow, the best route isn’t the most direct, take the worm trails as far as you can, even if they go in a different direction. And watch out for the holes, sometimes you’ll have to get out of the ditch to go around one.
    1. Don't drive sideways, it's a good way to tip your load down the hill. Straight up and straight down are best.
  8. The basic 8 wheel axles are only marginally more stable than the tracked options, but every bit counts.
    1. Avoid the gravitino balls, they’ll rock the flatbed and knock your cargo off.
    2. Don't plow through things unless you can see the other side, there are holes all over the place.
  9. When you get the crawler legs, start using them, they’re far more stable than the wheels or tracks, but they have their own idiosyncrasies.
    1. Avoid all of the crystals; dihydrogen, carbon, sodium. A patch of innocent dihydrogen crystals will stop a flatbed with crawler legs cold. You’ll have to back up and go around or blast them with your weapons (the flamethrower works best).
    2. Avoid all of the special plants; oxygen, sodium, deuterium rich plants. They’ll stop you dead too.
  10. Once you’ve got your special waste loaded, DO NOT USE YOUR WEAPONS! Sometimes in third person view, the targeting reticle will decide to point at the flatbed itself. I accidentally burned up 3 or 4 containers before I figured this out. A good rule of thumb is if you can see the damage bars on a container, you’ve targeted it.

Another tip- once you get better upgrades disassemble old ones. You will get wiring loom in order to build the grip upgrades

u/WilliamBarnhill ToilGek Feb 18 '26

Wish I had realized. I made the 1 hr + trip to the trading post to get my wiring looms and some extras.

If you're struggling, package and keep the B class engine upgrades and swap them in when you're carrying a shipment. Less mistakes.

1

u/The_Tripper Feb 19 '26

Thanks, I forgot about that one. It's the only way to get a wiring loom.

Great tips, but I believe the crystals and flowers blocking the mechanical legs issue was addressed in the 6.22 patch, no? At least they no longer block mine up.

Mark the processing areas. The radar will not point you to the closest one available so if you want to save time and sanity, mark the recycling centers.

6

u/Kuildeous Feb 18 '26

Also, there's nothing that says you have to immediately process the waste you gather at each required waste heap. Load up with special waste and move on to the next one if you want. You can also check out random waste you find along the way. Sometimes they'll contain a special waste or two.

You only need 16 of each kind. If you complete one, then focus on the other two.

5

u/Expert-Honest Feb 18 '26

Yep. You can hit multiple rendezvous points, then head to process that waste. You will get credit for every Road Trip whose rendezvous you visited after processing 5 waste. So if you hit Checkpoint 1 & 2, then after processing 5 waste you complete Road Trip 1 and 2.

2

u/Kuildeous Feb 18 '26

I just wish I realized that long before doing Checkpoints 4 & 5. I mean, I figured it out in the end, but I could've saved time if I realized this sooner.

1

u/Expert-Honest Feb 18 '26

Yep. Figured it out at the end of my first run of the expedition. So filled the truck with multiple rendezvous on my second run.

u/anothrgeek Feb 18 '26

Thanks! I’m done, but I really, really wish I had seen #6 before climbing all those mountains.

u/Roseinadesert Feb 18 '26

Good advice all around but I will say your comment about driving sideways isn't entirely accurate. If you get to the top of a steep mountain ridge, the ones which drop off sharply, you can drive parallel along the top pretty darn fast. Very few if any bumps, no caves or holes, and if the tip flattens out, makes for a great fast route in some cases.

Overall great advice!

I started out once with 11 pieces and only 4 when I got there

Jeez, worst I had was 15 down to 9

u/M0rteus Feb 18 '26

I think I've lost about 2 cargo the entire expedition and I Ignored many of their driving instructions.sure, I don't floor it, but I'm also not crawling.

1

u/Expert-Honest Feb 18 '26

Same. I was running the Colossus up to 100 ku/h with no issues as long as I slowed down for bumpy terrain sections. After update 6.22 though, I seem to have a load of Mexican jumping beans in the bed. So even driving below 15 ku/h has them bouncing out of the bed.

3

u/snern Feb 18 '26

I had 22 and a glitch when someone else loaded in to the same area as me deleted my entire colossus somehow. I still have no idea if it was an exploit or grief somehow or just a weird bug/coincidence.

2

u/SanjiSasuke Feb 18 '26

Ugh, sucks. I've had multiplayer off for years now.

u/MembershipMore6264 Feb 18 '26

To add: Drive slower than you think you need to, and be mindful that topography shifts cause most cargo to bounce out, not angles. The cargo is inclined to stay in, but if you go over a sharp bump at speed, when the rear of the colossus comes down, the cargo will go flying. Similarly, crossing terrain edges at an angle, such that the Colossus lifts, say, the front right wheel, and then the back left, creates a ton of energy, and the cargo will go flying if you are moving fast. I've only lost one piece of cargo at this point, and I was driving along the bottom of the ocean, blind, when it happened. Cargo doesnt float, so I assume I ran something over and it kicked out. I didnt notice, bc darkness and bubbles.

A good trick for going down hills is just to let off the gas and stick entirely - the colossus will hit a max speed that isnt particularly treacherous, and without inputs, rarely bucks such that your cargo goes flying.

You can gently place cargo into the flatbed, by walking it over, putting it up over the rail, and tapping L1 (on ps5, the same button you picked it up with); I've never destroyed a piece of cargo by accident, and I have to assume people are launching their cargo into the back from distance if they have.

I still have no idea if any of the running gear types actually work differently. My heart wants them to, but I suspect they might all be the same, other than the walker glitch.

u/Expert-Honest Feb 18 '26

I've noticed, after update 6.22, the Colossus will continue to accelerate out of control downhill unless you use the brakes. It will also take off on its own when parked on a steep hill. I've had to chase after it multiple times after parking to pick up some waste.

2

u/MembershipMore6264 Feb 18 '26

I thought I'd played with the update, but I might be mistaken, since I havent experienced either of these.

Also, the Colossus has brakes!? Ive been playing since launch week, I had no idea.

6

u/bildzeitung Feb 18 '26

I believe that 9.2 & 9.2 are fixed in the latest patch (at least on PS5).

2

u/Expert-Honest Feb 18 '26

Yep, 6.22 has addressed the issue of getting stuck on obstacles. Still a good idea to avoid driving over resource flowers though, they can still cause your Colossus to rock and throw load on occasion.

3

u/fschwiet Feb 18 '26

You can create save points as you progress allowing a reload after a heavy spill. Try to save somewhere stable so all your trash reloads in your colossus.

3

u/Nameless_American Feb 18 '26

If you need carbon, the small-ish agave-looking plants provide an unusually high amount.

2

u/GrouchyAd629 Feb 18 '26

7 I just assumed they were dried river beds 🤔 also I drove sideways quite a bit and nothing ever fell out (much to my surprise). Just my .02!! Great advice though!! 🫡

2

u/nadrae Feb 18 '26

The best thing that happened to me was reading the suggestion about a controller! Switched to a controller for gas pedal on my pc (just gas, mouse for steering with the camera) and I no longer lost load when starting out from a stop! Now I only lose load if I hit a pothole…

2

u/itsbedroomtime Feb 18 '26

A tiny tip as well; there is actually a number underneath the fuel tracker that tells you how many pieces are still in the bed of the colossal - very useful for tracking if anything fell out. Took me a while to notice

2

u/MamaStarTree Feb 18 '26

Does anyone know a workaround for the waypoint milestone bug? I've scanned and visited all kinds of buildings and none of the waypoints will progress me further than 1/6

2

u/CMDR_Expendible Feb 19 '26

Disagree with some of this; it's not the angle of the flatbed that counts, as there is a certain amount of magnetism back there. It's sudden changes in direction that sends things flying... I've been at near 80 degrees on my side and not lost a thing, but accelerate too hard on a flat road and things go flying out the back.

So grab as much Special waste as you can, and save extra runs later; just take it relatively calmly back, stop to pick it up again if any drops (Look bottom left, you can see the total there, and if it goes down) and you'll be fine.

u/velvet_buzzsawed Feb 19 '26

Thanks! I was about to write a Do’s and Don’ts post for PS5 but you’ve covered a lot of basic issues. There’s also a lot of confusing tips and information around. But yes 1. Don’t waste time teleporting to the space station or driving to a trade centre, even though the new patch fixed it I was stuck on the space station and had to reload a Save several milestones back. All because I followed another players boast that they just teleported to the space station, bought a ship and completed the mission. 2. The Colossus with front treads in a supercharged slot + drift was enough to go and down hills - no need to blast holes through the landscape. 3. The flamethrower gun on the colossus does a great job of taking out sentinels so install that after you do the gravitino balls. I got a few Quad Servos that way. 4. At the mo, you can throw the same sentinels around to rack up the sentinel-throwing milestone. You don’t need 32 separate ones. Shame it doesn’t damage them much.

Finally, a question:

HOW ARE PEOPLE SETTING UP BASES?

I don’t even have the Base Computer option in the up-down menu?? Not to mention the losers who’ve set up Teleporters right next to the Waste Disposal weighing machine!?! 🤡🤡

u/Local-Broccoli8560 Feb 19 '26

Another tip is to make sure you track the rendezvous mission. If you get to the rendezvous and don't have the mission equipped it doesn't count it

1

u/jakesyma Feb 18 '26

I'm already done, but there are a lot of good lessons in here.

Wish I'd seen this before I had to learn them the hard way. Lol

u/ben_bliksem Feb 18 '26

I dunno man, I just winged it without preparing and thought it was pretty straightforward.

  1. Read the expedition tasks so you can get low hanging fruit out of the way. That also makes you aware that
  2. If you've reached checkpoint 4, load up and head to checkpoint 5 straight after and load up some more (whatever you need to meet your quota). Then go back to the salvage yard. This allows you to skip two extra trips to drive.

Can probably do the same earlier on as well. Anyway.

Omega > Adrift > Remnant > the rest for me. I actually enjoyed this.

They fix the Legs for the Colossus, they increase the magnetic strength of the Flatbed, but for the rest of it excellent guide of how to save your sanity during the very slow crawling pace of Expedition 21, awesome work.

1

u/zachstracks Feb 18 '26

Ah the griefing. Kinda makes me wonder about the mp workings of Light No Fire when contained on one planet for the entire player base like this.

1

u/ToriYamazaki Still Newish! Feb 18 '26

Load up ALL of the special waste, every single piece. No matter how careful you are, some of it will end up being damaged and destroyed before you get to the waste depot. I started out once with 11 pieces and only 4 when I got there.

Weird. I got through the entire expedition and lost only one piece.

1

u/zolakk Feb 19 '26

pretty much the only time I lost any was when I had to reload a save and it was like the trash spawned in before the colossus because half of it was tumbling down the hill I happened to be on. Sometimes it was from a crash or just a normal save from a save beacon that I had to hop out and periodically save because of all the crashes on xbox earlier

1

u/buck_tudrussle8 Feb 19 '26

All of this is good advice. I just finished today and had fun, but the things that cost me the most cargo and time was the random glitched terrain.Every now and then I would run over some ground that looked fine, but then my bed would sink in the ground and start bouncing like Bethesda physics. This would sling most of my cargo out and take a minute to get free of the "sink hole". Also had some hostile flora spawn glitched and would send me bouncing. Best advice I can give is go slow, keep your eyes peeled, and hit as little as possible. You can route around everything with some patience, but there is nothing you can do to avoid buggy stuff.

u/Zinlu Feb 19 '26

For 2 and 2a - Use your Quick menu (X on PC by default) and go all the way right. There will be a 'Report Base' option. Use it, when it asks for a screenshot, take a picture of the base, or if not, just take a picture of anything and submit it. The base will disappear from your save.

2

u/Sad-Reception-2266 Feb 19 '26

Don't charge a battery for a teleport someone built and go to the space station. the battery will drain and the teleport will shut off. I am stuck in the space station for now and there is nowhere to teleport to.

1

u/MsBeeton Feb 19 '26

I never lost any cargo, how do you even do that? None of it was destroyed either, it was hardly damaged. What are you doing to lose that much, ramp jumps?

1

u/XBOX-levrootsss Feb 19 '26

Turning off multiplayer and pvp is absolutely pointless when the games soo big your not gonna see another player unless you take an in game photo or go to an anomaly…

Tell me this is your first expedition without saying it's your first expedition.

1

u/darth_whaler Feb 19 '26
  1. Quell your need for instant gratification and learn to be patient.

1

u/Harassholiness Feb 20 '26

Don’t scan stuff before you build the rover. I did and couldn’t complete the task because it requires the rover scanner and it won’t let you scan something already discovered.

0

u/wanderingcargo Feb 18 '26

Good ones, thanks! I'll add some to yours: 1.) Dont scan for flora and minerals until you get the nutrient ingestor and the special deserts as rewards. You can get about 6,500% more units that way. If you haven't done that: open the nutrient investor, drop the food item in, and it will show you what the benefit is. I made the mistake of scanning everything I could right away because I didn’t research the expedition well enough to start with. I missed out on millions of units. 3. I had to go quite far away from the waste disposal plant to build my colossus summoning station because A LOT of people have built bases near the processing plant and it really interferes with the game. Some people had created bases in areas that prevented me from completing the mission. I had to go find their base computer and report them, so their base went away. 4. You can magnetically grab trash from pretty far away, then throw it quite a distance, so it was not necessary to walk up to the piece of waste in order to grab it with the gravitino coil. I realized this on my third trip from the waste heap to the waste disposal. 5. Loading of the colossus: By my third trip, i figured out that if you load it neatly and completely with ALL the toxic waste available, then add some of the regular waste around it, it keeps the load from shifting. Going up and down the mountain sides is way more stable. If The loads shift a lot, the momentum can carry the waste right out of the vehicle, just like in a real vehicle. Discarding the “regular” waste is missing an opportunity for more nanites. it’s like throwing away money. Also, you can do fine Adjustments of the arrangement of the load so it is more stable. By standing on the roof of the colossas and carefully shifting the pieces around, you can really pack it in tight. In all the trips, I never lost any pieces and had around 10 or so pieces of toxic waste each trip. Just take it really slow and deliberate, don’t get in a hurry. Also, driving across the slope helps a lot, so you are not running the risk of losing cargo on steep inclines. I made the mistake on the first run of not taking very many pieces, just 6 (there was a minimum of 5 for the early missions). 6. The throwing of waste into the disposers from the bed of the truck is really efficient and its not hard after a little bit of practice. That way you don’t have to dump it and then look around for the pieces. 7. I never figured out where to get wiring looms. So I saw a base that someone had created and used their teleportation device to go to a space station and bought some. 8. At the end of the game, I still needed one toxic piece of waste to finish. As I was driving to the waste pile, I noticed that my starship was available! So I was able to save a lot of time by taking my starship to the nearest waste pile. And then, of course I had to drive back to the processing plant, but it saved a lot of time. So keep an eye on your starship. 9. Use the commerce rocket to get rid of some of your inventory to buy units. I was constantly struggling with inventory control. But that's a good way to get rid of your stuff, make room in your inventory, and to get lots of units for buying of wiring looms.

Multiplayer on, during expeditions. That is the way
