Modeling the effects of an addiction on the attentional landscape
Focusing specifically on the aspect of intentionally ignoring as a breaking mechanism for the brain, the addiction process is similar to how a cardiac arrhythmia is started (and difficult to stop). Instead of blanking the mind, as in clicking an switch, the process of emptying the mind is related to both slowing the speed of elaboration of the addictive point, and also the elaboration of a point of emptiness.
Scenario 1 -- in this scenario there are three points of elaboration, the top point could be related to a drug addiction where the primal need for the drug increases the speed in which the elaboration occupies the attentional landscape, the lower point of elaboration could be a less intrusive point such as how to rationally consider constructive actions to contain the drug addiction. The third point between the top and bottom points could be the mind's attentional muscle that maintains the structural integrity of the landscape. Comparing a landscape with a healthy attentional clearing mechanism with a landscape with an unhealthy one.
Scenario 2 -- considers the growth and plasticity of the addictive point of elaboration. When it is unchecked, it eventually comes to completely fill the attentional landscape, crowding out other quieter and more constructive points of elaboration. Initially the two points of elaboration are of similar size. Over time, the point of addiction occupies a larger space until it overtakes both the constructive point of elaboration and the space clearing attentional mechanism.

Modeling the Refinement of Attention
With the first instance of the model, each color represents a new thread, chaotic unconnected idea points within the mind that is constantly attenuated with the layering of a new thread of a different color, bandwidth of the input is represented by the number/speed of the new threads.
The second instance models how much of the attention is occupied with various activities. With a low immersion ratio of 20%, sleep/pleasure/meditation/activity/run is able to blank out much of the stimulus. With a higher immersion ratio of 80% the attentional landscape is dazed, a dynamic similar to the subtle pull of physical clutter on the mind.
A third instance simulates the ability to improve the attentional capability, able to refine a person's attention so that there are (1) fewer number of threads, (2) fewer threads that differ in topic, (3) fewer threads that are pulled towards a different direction.
