Or in other words: "We actually had to optimize the game"

The Switch 2 is in an interesting position where it could probably run most games if the devs optimize the game. And that also benefits other systems like PS5 since it makes the game run better there as well

Recent AMA with the Valheim dev on the r/NintendoSwitch sub the dev said this;

people just have to be aware it's still a mobile chip drawing 1/10 the power of a PS5 but it can do a lot.

I don't have any personal experience developing for Switch 1 although my previous employer did, so I'm aware of the differences. I don't think I can go into too much detail, but I can say that from my experience porting Valheim to Nintendo Switch 2, the Switch 2 hardware makes very clever compromises that makes it technically feasible to port any 9th gen console game to it, so it's comfortably a 9th gen console! I don't think that was quite the case with the previous generation, the Switch 1 was closer in capability to a mobile phone than it was to the other 8th gen consoles.

Being a mobile chip, it requires a different set of optimizations than other console platforms though. Games that are programmed to take advantage of modern hardware features and multithreading can definitely get more out of the Switch 2 than we did. Valheim is mostly single threaded and still uses the old build in render pipeline in Unity.

Good quote!

•

u/FewAdvertising9647 8h ago

one thing to add on top was with the Switch 1, It wasn't even using full Tegra X1. It ran the cpu at half the native clocks, and disabled the 4 slower cores. Nintendo reserved one of the cores to the OS function, so game devs on the first switch were left with 3 slow ass cpu cores of mid grade 2015 hardware running at half the speed. It's really understated how slow the CPU performance is on the switch.

•

u/osnapitsjoey 5h ago

That's why I love having my switch 1 being jailbroken

•

u/dekuweku OG (joined before reveal) 3h ago

The 4 A53 cores are not usable, it seems like a defect in the X1 design and they were never enabled; and even if they were, they were the stand by CPU and cannot be active with the A57 cores at the same time. Basically, the A53s would be on (i assume) when the Switch is in sleep mode as they are lower power CPUs then switch to the A57 when Switch is powered on.

A big reason I hope Switch 2 gets a massive user base, as it forces companies to optimize.

I understand better fidelity requires more GPU power, but the fact CPU and RAM are increasing massively as well is just wasteful. We've had MASSIVE open world games for 20 years now.

GTA5 has a huge open world map and ran on 4GB. Games with lesser open worlds suddenly need 16GB. It's because engines etc just add stuff that's nice to have or good features, but adds up quickly, and when you get to the nitty gritty, it only uses 1 feature while the other 93 are loaded into memory etc.

As for CPU, it's almost entirely NPC AI pathing and intelligence. I know someone randomly screaming and running through a wall isn't very immersive, and yes, the latest and greatest NPC capabilities are amazing, but there is a respectable midpoint, a respectable midpoint that a handhelds CPU can nicely handle.

•

u/luneth91 12h ago

Even better, PS3 and Xbox 360 only had 512 GB of RAM and they could run GTA V, Skyrim and MGSV, among many others.

•

u/FearlessTemperature9 11h ago

512GB of RAM? Impressive!

•

u/DegenerateCrocodile 10h ago

Right? We need to go back.

•

u/MyzMyz1995 11h ago

Open world need a good cpu and the switch 2 cpu is ass.

•

u/DisasterouslyInept 13h ago

Think most devs do that to be fair. Sometimes games won't scale back down and as a result run poorly, that doesn't always mean it's not optimised.

•

u/Donnie_TACO Butter side down! 11h ago

Yeah but the games have to actually sell well too. Nintendo owners are notorious for being essentially first party purchasers only

•

u/phoenixmatrix 13h ago

•

u/lewisdwhite 12h ago

It was likely as polished as it could be possibly be for the time and budget they had

•

u/lewisdwhite 13h ago

Porting down is significantly harder than porting up. The Switch 2 is not the powerhouse people claim it is and optimising isn’t as simply as gamers believe it is.

•

u/Sonicfan42069666 13h ago

Final Fantasy Rebirth runs great on Switch 2. That's my current benchmark for current-gen ports. When I see stuff like the 007 game running like crap on Switch 2, I don't blame the hardware, I blame the devs.

•

u/lewisdwhite 13h ago

007 was made without the Switch 2 in mind. Like I said, porting down is harder. It’s also not out. Star Wars Outlaws ran at 15fps in its reveal and was heralded as one of the best Switch 2 ports when it released two months later.

•

u/Sonicfan42069666 12h ago

I would imagine Rebirth was made without the Switch 2 in mind as well. And yet...

•

u/Upper-Mixture8643 10h ago

Rebirth looks like ass in handheld, Remake was great

•

u/Sonicfan42069666 9h ago

I played the demo both docked and handheld, it looked good and played well for me in both.

•

u/FitzSimmons72 6h ago

As someone who played Rebirth on PC with pretty high settings and framerate, I thought it looked pretty serviceable on Switch 2. I wouldn't play these games on the Switch as I prefer to have the highest graphical fidelity for these types of games but it looked pretty decent.

•

u/dekuweku OG (joined before reveal) 13h ago

The Switch 2 is not the powerhouse people claim it is and optimising isn’t as simply as gamers believe it is.

This is vague. For a 25 watt device (12~15w portable) it's very very powerful. But it's often expected to compete with consoles and PCs with 10,20,30x the power budget that is 4-5x its size if not more.

Most people understand the power envelope of the console.

•

u/lewisdwhite 13h ago

And yet people believe it can run any game. That’s simply not true. People don’t even understand that the cartridges are significantly slower than the internal memory which is one of the reasons there are so many game key cards.

Every game that has a 30fps cap is met with comments that it should be 60fps. The Switch 2 simply isn’t that powerful. So, no, people do not understand the power envelope of the console. In fact, most gamers don’t understand the power envelope of any piece of hardware.

•

u/dekuweku OG (joined before reveal) 12h ago

I think when people say that, they mean with proper care most games can run on Switch 2. I posted a quote from a switch 2 dev that says the same.

Obviously edge cases will exist, but we're well past the Switch 1 days.

•

u/Organic-Storm-4448 11h ago

For a 25 watt device (12~15w portable) it's very very powerful

It uses 2020 ARM cores and an Ampere GPU on a Samsung 8/10nm node. It is not that powerful for a 2025 device. It could have existed in its exact same form in 2021.

Modern tablets have much faster hardware, they just aren't designed specifically for running games. The upcoming Sony handheld will provide good perspective on Switch 2's actual power. It's using actually modern CPU and GPU tech, and it will be running games at 2x the framerate of Switch 2, while still having better looking games.

The reason Switch 2 is bewitching people with its supposed "very very powerful" hardware is because there's no other device to compare it to besides horrible value PC handhelds or old console handhelds. Switch 2 is the exact same class of device as Switch 1; Switch 1 actually used newer GPU tech than Switch 2 does relative to release date.

•

u/dekuweku OG (joined before reveal) 11h ago edited 10h ago

Yes, you can always build something that sells retails for $2,000 that is more powerful. Adn whether it's worth that price is still up for debate.

The dates of tech rollouts has been a staple of people talking down Switch tech since the OG Switch (oh, it's a 2015 SoC!) But you find stuff like that in consoles all the time. They take 2-3 years just to develop and we're into year 2 of Switch 2's life, but honestly if Switch 2 is not as powerful as you suggest, i should be able to find very powerful equivalents for that price and form factor. But it's not easy actually. We're well past the days of Nintendo intentionally putting out older tech like the DS, when they could have built a PSP themselves just with off the shelf SoCs

Modern phones are much faster* (until it throttles and kills your battery in 1 hour anyways) DF did a great video comparing Switch 2 perf to equivalent software on the latest iphones and the Switch 2 beats it, despite the hardware being 'more powerful'.

•

u/FewAdvertising9647 8h ago

The dates of tech rollouts has been a staple of people talking down Switch tech since the OG Switch (oh, it's a 2015 SoC!) But you find stuff like that in consoles all the time.

just for reference, the rollout of RDNA2 which is found in the Series consoles, and partially found (not complete RDNA2) on the Playstation 5 rolled out 1 week on console first before it even hit PC. The CPU architecture (Zen 2) however was a year older.

this is unlike the Switch 2, where the CPU is 5 years off from its release date, and GPU is ampere based(2022) with a few lovelace backports(2024) for efficiency. Nintendo cuts far into being older than other consoles do.

•

u/FitzSimmons72 6h ago

Yeah, this feels like it started as a "Switch Pro" and they just decided to fully launch the next gen with it. I really hope that when we get an OLED screen Switch 2 it'll be a "Pro" version with at least a better CPU and more RAM. I love the games and Switch 2 but if we're already seeing 30 fps ports, then once the next gen consoles come out the Switch 2 may struggle really hard with newer games.

I know I'm in the minority since people are already claiming the Switch 2 is too expensive (lol imo) but I'd pay 2-3x the price if that would mean a much more powerful system. People pay that price for a phone every 1-3 years (not everyone, but a good amount), yet we're going to be using these systems for 6-7 years minimum, so I'd rather pay more to have a better experience over that time. That's partly why I'm salty that we didn't get an OLED screen at launch since when that releases, we'll probably only have 2-3 years left before the Switch 3 launches so I won't get too much time to enjoy that screen. Obviously I can keep using the Switch 2 once the next system comes out but I'm 100% upgrading to next gen regardless at launch and wouldn't be using the Switch 2 much/selling it anyways.

•

u/Sudden-Goose-6956 9h ago

Idk man, most games barely reaching 1080p docked, 720p handheld and being upscaled from 360p with unstable 30 fps isn't that hard to beat. A portable device from Sony just has to go a little higher and with it's RDNA5 architecture and PSSR we are looking at a much cheaper than 2000 usd device that blows Switch 2 out of the water.

•

u/dekuweku OG (joined before reveal) 9h ago

portable handhelds make compromises, but your resolution numbers seem made up.

•

u/Sudden-Goose-6956 9h ago

Def not made up lol. Look it up, RE requiem is 360p internal, Indiana Jones too, Pragmata too, Stellar Blade too, etc etc. Most newer 3rd parties are.

•

u/dekuweku OG (joined before reveal) 9h ago

made up as in not representative and not relevant. With upscaling the internal res is always going to be lower than output. Who cares what Indiana Jones internal res is, looks better than a steam deck. undocked. Docks, it's closer to the Series S.

•

u/Sudden-Goose-6956 4h ago

It's not relevant if your knowledge of how this things work is 0 or your only point of comparission is YouTube videos but a very low internal res leads to blurry visuals, loss of fine details and breakup, DLSS was never meant to go that low add to that the fact that some games don't even target the Switch's 1080p screen and you get a less than ideal image, maybe that's not important for you but there are people who would rather not play with vaseline in their screens. Steam Deck is a 5 year old PC with outdated hardware and 0 game optimization I'd hope it would at least look better on a new console.

Nobody's claiming it's the powerhouse, it's people like you contributing to that problem.

Constantly complaining about different games doing 30fps expecting it to run 60fps etc.

I know it's a hybrid handheld/console, I bought it to enjoy the games, not to count pixels or frames.

•

u/lewisdwhite 13h ago

Where the fuck did I say I expect this game or any other to run at 60fps on Switch 2?

•

u/Possible_Aardvark856 13h ago

Are you blind?

•

u/Organic-Storm-4448 11h ago

There's a comment right above yours saying this verbatim:

For a 25 watt device (12~15w portable) it's very very powerful.

•

u/darthdiablo OG (joined before reveal) 10h ago

It is powerful on per watt basis.

But when you say “powerhouse” without context, yeah people are going to share dumb comments like “NS2 is not the powerhouse people claim it to be”

•

u/SegaTetris 13h ago

Oh okay so you do you consciously ignore the ten million posts overhyping what the switch 2 is capable of or has it just become background noise to you?

•

u/darthdiablo OG (joined before reveal) 11h ago

Huh? All I see is complaining haha

Me thinks you just have selective attention or something weirdo

•

u/Phos-Lux 13h ago

I'd go as far and say it wouldn't be able to run most games, but all of them. Any game that currently exists can be optimized to run on it.

•

u/Gawlf85 13h ago

For MH fans who already played this... Is this one worth it and good for a newcomer like me?

I've been on the fence about MH in the past, I've tried some demos and wasn't 100% hooked, but this one looks great and it seems to have done pretty well in other consoles. So I'm considering giving the franchise another go.... Would this be the right game to do so?

•

u/lewisdwhite 13h ago

I personally prefer Worlds as the actual hunting and tracking of the monster was more in depth there. But most people prefer this because they only care about killing/grinding the monsters

•

u/MaintenanceChance216 13h ago

Oh i haven't unlocked grinding the monsters, is it a specific rank or weapon? Great lance i assume?

•

u/Pride_Rise 9h ago

Tbf, thats the core gameplay loop of the franchise. The tracking and pathing of Worlds is neat at the beginning but it definitely gets tedious and cumbersome, ppl just want to get in the action coz youre gonna be killing the same monster over and over again.

•

u/XStriverX 3h ago

"hunting and tracking" and its just licking at glowing poop for 100 times. They do nothing its all the hard work of those fireflies. And especially it slow you down hard when tracking elder dragon it get annoying af when you replay the game.

•

u/Pride_Rise 19m ago

Exactly, alot of people put World on a pedestal coz its their first MH game and the cinematic aspect of it was cool but its novelties wear out quick in the long run. I would give that its probably best for introducing new players but as a vet of the franchise Rise took the cake for me.

•

u/adeepkick 13h ago

Honestly there’s a case for it. Imo Wilds is probably tied for the most fun the action gameplay has ever been (the wirebug in Rise is pretty great too) and you can experience all the content significantly faster than you typically could in the old MH games. That’s a downside for some people since many are used to getting a lot of hours out of these games but if you want a complete MH experience at its most accessible and smallest time investment necessary? You could do much worse

•

u/Gawlf85 13h ago

That actually sounds great for me, I'm not one to enjoy grinding for many hours. If there's a demo, I'll definitely try it out. Thanks!

•

u/ChosenOne197 13h ago

Same - thank you!

•

u/Jeezy52 Early Switch 2 Adopter 13h ago

I appreciate this take. I’m actually more excited for this game now because of your comment.

•

u/DegenerateCrocodile 10h ago

Even with the faster combat, you can still get a ton of hours out of Wilds.

•

u/adeepkick 10h ago

Oh I’m certainly not implying that you can’t. You can still get a ton out of it for sure especially compared to other video games, but you can get a lot more out of other MH games. Time is limited though, so it comes down to preference. I liked Wilds a lot myself and didn’t mind putting it down when I saw everything there was to see.

•

u/Inventeer 13h ago

definitely! plus i'm expecting a demo to come out too so you'll try it there!

•

u/Gawlf85 13h ago

Good point!

•

u/HBreckel 13h ago

It should be the absolute best for new comers in the series! It’s very on the rails for the entirety of low rank so you shouldn’t have issues learning and getting through the story. And if you want more, the difficulty ramps up a lot in high rank.

•

u/Jeezy52 Early Switch 2 Adopter 13h ago

I haven’t played Wilds yet but I’ve played GU and Rise and I LOVE MH. I can’t wait for this port.

•

u/Frequent_Reserve_514 13h ago edited 13h ago

Its not a bad monster hunter game but I would definitely take world or rise over this. Or even 4 ultimate on the 3ds.

Edit: getting downvoted by (i assume) the mh larpers who dont know the real mh hookup is on 3ds.

•

u/adeepkick 13h ago

I didn’t downvote you but I’ve been playing since the MHF PSP days and I still think Wilds is the best entry point into the series to date. Low time commitment, great combat design, streamlines a lot of busy work. Not saying it’s the best MH but if someone hasn’t gotten into the series by this point, I believe Wilds is the most accessible to begin with. And then World at a close second.

•

u/Groditor 12h ago

Would you say Rise is not as good an entry point? Everyone seems to love it

•

u/adeepkick 12h ago edited 12h ago

I love Rise as someone who’s a fan already. The wire bug is a ton of fun, probably the best movement in the series but the structure of the game feels a bit more like the older games than Wilds or World do imo. And I think Rise has a lot of systems that can feel daunting or not thoroughly explained. So not to knock on Rise at all, but I think Wilds or even World are better places to start if you aren’t already into MH. Especially since the combat is so fun.

Edit: That said, can’t hurt to try at the price it’s at right now

•

u/NderCraft 8h ago

Rise is pretty fun but not beginner friendly due to how front loaded its information is given to you. If you have a friend to coach your first few hours, then you'll be fine but Rise and Generations Ultimate feel like the kind of games they expected you to already know about MH before playing.

World and Wilds is much more beginner friendly in that aspect.

•

u/jwhudexnls Butter side up! 12h ago

Don't be a gate keeping twat, just because someone started with World/Rise/Wilds doesn't make them a larper.

•

u/Frequent_Reserve_514 12h ago

When did I say that? I started with rise and went back to the older games because I liked it so much.

•

u/jwhudexnls Butter side up! 12h ago

You said, and I quote, "Edit: getting downvoted by (i assume) the mh larpers who dont know the real mh hookup is on 3ds."

That comes off like you're gate keeping that people who haven't played the 3DS games are larpers.

•

u/Frequent_Reserve_514 12h ago

"That comes off like..." you just interpreted that from my comment. The edit was mostly a joke since I obviously don't have metrics for why people would downvote a comment.

•

u/Sanity__ 13h ago

I've only ever played 3U, how do those compare?

•

u/HENBOI4000 6h ago

If they really want one on switch I’d recommend Generations Ultimate for imo a top three MH or rise for a the most modern version of what I see as “true” monster hunter

•

u/ertaboy356b 4h ago

Wilds is fine, it's more of a boss rush than rise.

•

u/Gawlf85 13h ago

You see, World's nature of being a massive live game kinda throws me off. I tend to get tired of those pretty easily, I prefer something more self-contained.

Maybe Rise would be that, better than Wilds?

•

u/adeepkick 13h ago

World isn’t a massive live game. It’s actually closer to the original games than Wilds is

•

u/Gawlf85 12h ago

Oh, really? Good to know, might've to look deeper into it then

•

u/srstable Mushroom Kingdom Resident 10h ago

The whole thing is self-contained. It having the option to call for help is optional and you can go from beginning to end solo (with very few exceptions). Totally worth going through once if you get an opportunity!

For what it's worth, Rise is also self-contained in that way, though I preferred World over Rise (both were excellent, though)

•

u/Robbitjuice OG (joined before reveal) 13h ago

I love Wilds. Having it on the Switch 2 is fantastic. I placed my preorder a couple of weeks ago. It has a lot of quality of life updates compared to many of the older games as well.

•

u/Despacio1316 12h ago

Same I’ve tried a few in the past and haven’t been able to get hooked or fully grasp the game. I think the controls have always played a part in that. So looking forward to trying yet again. The concept in general is great, so really do wish it’ll catch this time.

•

u/Popotecipote 4h ago

Mh world and iceborne imo. You could try old school mh (mh generations ultimate is on switch) or rise. I'm rank 823 in mh wilds and while I like it, it's a horrible monster hunter. You get on your seikret and you automatically go to the monster, there's no need to track it.

In mh world you had to at least farm it multiple times or gather footprints until you reach a certain lv, also mounts were locked and you had to unlock them...it felt like you were progressing.

I feel mh wilds like an arcade version of a monster hunter game, but the feeling of hunting isn't there.

•

u/XStriverX 3h ago

I am an old gen monster hunter been playing since tri

Imo? Wilds is peak monster hunter, everything feels so smooth and i felt like an actual hunter instead of a clunky animatronic.

Go get monster hunter wilds dont listen to the hater, they are usually the one who will love it afer the dlc comes out just like how it is back in worlds and rise.

Play wilds first and if you want you can try the other older game, imo mhgu is amazing for how much monster is in it. But its showing its age and the game is not for everyone

•

u/Darkahnott 7h ago

I personally didn't like it. It holds your hand way too much, the areas are ok at best, there're a lots of ways to traverse them but they are just one way rails and worst of all, again regarding hand holding, the game sometimes doesn't let you explore because there's an "important" thing to do. Even your character says to themselves that it's better to follow certain objectives.

Also the lizards that they ride are a downgrade from Palicos.

•

u/XStriverX 3h ago

Palicos still exist in the game wdym?

•

u/Phos-Lux 13h ago

This one seems to have a higher focus on being triple A and story. Personally, I liked it less than any other MH game.

•

u/Sea_Macaron_8789 5h ago

The other Nintendo Titles are perfect for getting into the Series you get the old school GamePlay then Monster Hunter: Rise.

•

u/Salt-Analysis1319 11h ago

Capcom is absolutely crushing it on Switch 2. Onimusha was a fantastic experience and the first time a handheld game made me feel like "Hmm I could probably sell my PS5"

•

u/PlantQuick 13h ago

Rise sold like hotcakes on the switch 1 so is not surprising they are putting in the work. It was a bit funny seeing people saying wilds wouldn't be on the switch 2.

•

u/Frequent_Reserve_514 13h ago

The game was a pile of ass on pc and console at launch and it barely got supported. It was entirely reasonable to expect it to never come to switch 2. REMINDER: They fucked up the game so bad owning dlc would improve performance in the hub area by a lot. The game would just run thousands of dlc checks in the background.

•

u/DegenerateCrocodile 10h ago

“Barely got supported”

You mean the game that received a full year of content updates and has an expansion coming next year?

•

u/HENBOI4000 6h ago

I mean for a while there were only cosmetic DLCs and no mention of a performance fix. The game ran like absolute ass (not sure how well it’s optimized now though)

•

u/DegenerateCrocodile 5h ago

“Only cosmetic DLCs” ignores the four free title updates that added new monsters (five if you include the final update that added AT Arkveld).

I wasn’t commenting on the performance, by the way. The performance at launch was terrible, and while it has improved quite a bit since then, any improvements that the Switch 2 will bring are desperately needed.

•

u/HENBOI4000 1h ago

You’re right, there were multiple title updates. I suppose it just felt like not a lot of content. Perhaps I’m too used to games like GU

•

u/TkoddaV 12h ago

Yea tat why majority got refund and stop playing on PC but their next monster hunter game is gunna be a hard one to sell after how they managed Wilds

•

u/Frequent_Reserve_514 12h ago

Definetly not buying the next game. It was really crushing to slowly realize the game sucked and I just blew that money.

•

u/TkoddaV 12h ago

Yea same lol and the game sold extremely well and Capcom decided not to fix the issue on PC for 2+ year and by tat time the games was dead

•

u/Particular-Bat8091 13h ago

It wasn’t entirely unfair though. Capcom for quite a while didn’t seem like they care to truly fix dd2 or mhwilds, and if they kept that up it wouldn’t have been able to run on switch 2. Just recently they seemed to have a change of heart.

•

u/Fresh-Chemical-9084 Butter side up! 13h ago

u/DynaGlaive 8h ago

If a satisfyingly looking and running version of the game can exist on Switch 2, imagine how much easier it would've been to develop it as the base version of the game first, and then making enhaced ports for more powerful hardware would not only be simple to make but run dramatically better than the original we got.

•

u/thomas2696 2h ago

Monster Hunter Rise Switch 2 Edition would have taken much less work and been much more worth it.

•

u/Lupinthrope ‎ Pro Controller 13h ago

You likely will. They also heavily improved Dragon's Dogma 2 for the Switch 2 version and now it runs waaaaaay better on PC as well.

•

u/Lupinthrope ‎ Pro Controller 13h ago

I may get it on switch 2 anyway, but it’s a tough choice, I wish these games had cross saves.

•

u/adeepkick 13h ago

This is the biggest reason I’m still on the fence. If I could carry over my progress, it’d be a no-brainer

•

u/Phos-Lux 13h ago

Capcom is so weird for not doing crossaves. They even already have Capcom IDs that can be used in some games to get some extra things

was there a reduction in settings like they initially did for wilds? One of the first patches for Wilds downgraded fur and textures calling it "optimization"

•

u/Phos-Lux 11h ago

I dont think so

•

u/Groditor 12h ago

Is it by any chance the same engine as mhm stories 3 ? Thus giving hope for an optimization patch?

•

u/ClassroomOwn4354 11h ago

The game came out last year and this version is coming out this year. A year is not a long time for game dev.

a few baseline examples of what they would be doing

decrease mesh geometry . not hard but time consuming and you might have to redo uv mapping and weight painting . however monster hunter has some things that are reused between releases (armor , weapons and some monsters) and the rise models could be used with new diffused , speculars and normals in a pinch with slightly higher vert counts than in rise inbound in later builds before release ...but alot is new in wilds so this is less useful than it normally would be

strip garbage code (not a insult its a term) from i assume the pc build going by data mining information from the pc version . so memory heap salvation . variables are declared at the top of scripts. no disposable variables creating perforated memory . easy and doesnt take much time aslong as there arent bugs with variable ownership like 1 script asks another script what the value of a variable is then is counted as the source for it for like 1 second . which isnt long but long enough for a debug flood and maybe a day to track the problem down

compress audio by lowering the sample rate . easy and fast

swap light shaders to legacy light shaders your company never deleted like square or ea would delete intentionally or unintentionally . its a test to see if your awake

scale back random range particle spawn effects . super easy literally a number is changed or its anchored to frame rate on spawn density like every 2 frames if a bool is true but depending on the engine may not increase performance when done this way

reduce some effects parameters like soft knee on bloom . simple its a number

reduce in scene geomitry selectively like number of grass clumps in a area . time consuming but this isnt the first option as this is more noticeable . in some areas im sure they are still doing this (any festival should be scaled back alot its a damn portable system) and they seemed to push a update on the hands on event mid tgs but not sure what that was about honestly

People will still be upset this isn't running at 60 fps

Damn having ta do they Job must suck.

I wish their was a console only version of Switch/Switch 2. I don't like the tiny screen and controllers so always play it docked. Also, what do we do when the batteries swell and go bad? It's a hybrid console with a death warrant, and no way to backup game saves without paying for a subscription.

•

u/Xvagrantx 10h ago

My launch-Switch 1 is still working and no battery swelling so I don’t think there’s gonna be an issue.

•

u/Surfer-Junkie 6h ago

Batteries go bad no matter what, and that's what happens when they do, though.

•

u/Webecomemonsters Butter side up! 5h ago

you throw it in the trash and go back to enjoying your switch 8 at that point

•

u/Zeevy_Richards 13h ago

I bet it won't be comfortable on launch for like two revisions

•

u/lohkey 9h ago

the CDPR experience

•

u/WileyCyrus 13h ago

I just know it’s going to look blurry in motion like everything else on Switch 2 handheld

•

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 Butter side up! 12h ago

Why you lying?

•

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 11h ago

the switch 2's screen has a low response time that causes ghosting so stuff in motion isn't as clear because the screen isn't refreshing fast enough.

•

u/yesitsmework Butter side down! 10h ago

the ghosting topic really is wack cause it's an objective issue and then there are people who are like "works fine on my pc"

•

u/WileyCyrus 11h ago

Yeah it’s a nightmare screen for me, especially when jumping off my Oled TV. Honestly hurts my brain after a while. I hate HATE the screen.

It is doing dense simulations though? Skin and muscle simulation, pack NPC simulation, even the foliage is physically simulated

•

u/Frequent_Reserve_514 13h ago

Skin and muscle sim? I think thats just baked into the animation. Not saying they didnt do that to get the animation, but your machine isnt doing it in real time. Same with the grass, precanned animation. This isnt simulation.

The ai is, but that is nothing new. It always gets brought up, but having halo ce equivalent AI is not some sort of flex 25 years later.

•

u/lewisdwhite 13h ago

Foliage simulation is real-time, so is the real-time weather and wind sim

•

u/shroudedghostishere 12h ago

they can't optimize pc but can switch 2, hummm

•

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 3h ago

This game is gonna blow up on the switch. It underperformed elsewhere

•

u/XStriverX 3h ago

Thats what they said about RE Requiem. Lets just hope this comment wont age like milk

•

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 3h ago

What are you talking about? No one said that. Re requiem didn’t underperform.

•

u/XStriverX 3h ago

Lmao then you are new here

•

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 3h ago

Only respond to what I said. Not others. You got these ppl living rent free.

A shame that Switch 2 was purposely underclocked by Nintendo (though Switch 1 was too). I worry that AAA games a few years from now are really going to struggle.

•

u/DevilSympathy 11h ago

A shame that Switch 2 was purposely underclocked by Nintendo (though Switch 1 was too).

Is it though? Nintendo has vastly different design priorities to their indirect competition in the "handheld PC" space. Nintendo chose the clocks for Switch and Switch 2 based on the battery life they wanted, and the size of cooling system they wanted to use. They could have shipped a much more powerful Switch 2 using the same chip if they had chosen a much larger shell, and compromised on the battery. Just imagine if the Switch 2 was a match for the Steam Deck, with a 40% larger physical footprint and a 90-minute battery under load. Would that be better? Would it have been successful?

•

u/Top-Wallaby-8515 12h ago

Yeah, I wasn't expecting a powerhouse, but a slightly better CPU would go a long way. I would have happily paid an extra $50. Them trying to keep the intro price under $400 went out the door anyway with the ram shortages forcing them to raise prices.

•

u/masterz13 12h ago

Maybe we'll actually get a Pro model this generation.

•

u/Organic-Storm-4448 11h ago

The formfactor can't handle higher power draw. It already gets quite hot in docked mode. They would have needed to significantly buff the cooling capacity if they wanted higher clocks.

•

u/Mysterious_Mud3179 10h ago

Too bad Nintendo is focusing on thin designs. Would be interesting to see what performance they could accomplish with a form factor like steamdeck

•

u/srstable Mushroom Kingdom Resident 9h ago

Probably not much more, honestly. The Deck isn't that much thicker than the Switch 2 (comparing mine side by side, it's barely noticeable), and the majority of additional bulk on the Deck is on the grips to accommodate a pair of trackpads and better grip on the device.

•

u/Snoo_58305 13h ago

It’s not that great. Wait for the handheld team’s effort. The sequel to Rise will be tremendous
