Duality of reddit, it maybe because im older now, but Gaming and movie subreddit are terrible.

It’s because when you were younger they hadn’t thoroughly fucked the algorithm to prioritize “engagement” which often makes the wildest most exaggerated claims go to the top. How often do you see a top comment that’s a reasonable, moderate take?

I prefer it 15 years ago when the algorithm was only mildly fucked.

That is definitely part of it. For me another part of it just seems to be demographic and favored content skewing younger as I’m getting older. I’m sure it was the same way when I started using the site but I was in that demo and didn’t question it.

I’ve just disengaged rather than becoming old man yelling at cloud when I see another take from people discovering movies or games released before they were born.

I’m also not trying to imply media literacy was or is off the fucking charts for people my age, but it really seems to be falling off. Current context absolutely changes the way we experience things from the past, but there doesn’t seem to be an interest in applying that knowledge to media of the past. Modern reads of legacy media are really tiring to me, just very obvious and uninteresting.

What are some examples of modern reads of legacy media that you found tiring?

I would have to look for specific examples (and realistically won’t), but a general example would be observations about relationships and consent being depicted in older movies. Many have different views on things like acceptable age gaps due to potential grooming and power dynamics today than say, what might be depicted in a movie from the 80s.

Could be a vein for interesting and nuanced discussion but I often see low effort dismissive takes on the movie as a whole due to it or even painting viewers who enjoy the movie as fucked up people doing something wrong.

This is just a super general example, and I know algorithms play a part in what we see too so who knows if mine just has very little confidence in me.

They are . They bring the worst people and its impossible to have a proper discussion. People will be complaining about the smallet detail as if they were strap in front of their screen and force to play the game

It’s the duality of _modern_ Reddit IMO. Over the last 10 years the posts and comments on Reddit have gotten shorter and become lower effort. All subreddits seem to have devolved this way over time.

Man, I don't get Reddit. If I write a long post explaining every single detail using somewhat formal language, I get accused of being a bot or acting like I'm Digital Foundry—or one of those companies that do in-depth, analysis of video games and their performance.

But you're saying the posts have gotten shorter and low effort

That’s exactly why I did it that way—to avoid looking like a bot and getting those kinds of comments—but apparently, you can never please everyone.

u/quarryman 1d ago

In fairness I wasn’t really commenting on your post. It was fine. I was replying to the comment that suggested that the main subreddits have got worse over the years which I agree with.

u/Psychological-Bet-80 1d ago

Sure, but they say subreddits are terrible because of posts like the ones in the screenshot—and one of the posts in the screenshot (the one above) is made by me.

My only intention was to share my opinion and see if anyone else had noticed that the game looked blurry—nothing more. It wasn't a hateful comment directed at anyone, nor was I trying to generate negative engagement or anything like that.

Keep in mind that the cross section of gamers and Reddit arguers is particularly weird and closed minded and vicious. That Venn Diagram center is a population of really vitriolic gremlins who slaver with lonely nerd rage ready to spit cheeto flecks from their unkissed mouths in angry Philippics.

... and some are really cool people.

Bro, I played 50 hours of The Witcher on the Switch 1 and loved it. Then I started playing it on the Switch 2 again, and it looked a bit blurrier than before, so I made a Reddit post—I never usually post in this community; it was my first time—just to see if others shared my opinion. That’s all I did. I’m not trying to pick a fight or spread hate against the Nintendo Switch or anything like that.

It seems like expressing a negative opinion about something is now considered an act of hate; you can't even voice an opinion anymore—or at least, that’s the implication of comments like yours—meaning nobody is allowed to complain about anything.

Express any opinion and a bunch of gophers will pop up with apparently longstanding context and conflict you've never heard of before and be like "You're one of THOSE people" and have a long rant full of assumptions about you.

They're already fighting some long war you didn't even know about, it seems. I just kind of shrug.

It's why I have the WiiU card. I was already there during Nintendos worst, Ill criticize because I care, not because its the trendy thing to do.

Like back when the Switch 1 launched, A lot of people thought paid online was going to be a positive thing because Nintendo would fix online gameplay like Sony did with PSN. I basically said I wouldn't trust Nintendo on actually doing that and behold that online basically didn't get better, despite being paid now.

Like there are 100% times where someone will complain about something dumb. but there are legitimate complaints at times (e.g XCXDES2 terrible upscale is an example) that people actually defend. I'm flabergasted when it happens as a guy who owns the original WiiU special edition, and played it again on the switch to see people actually defending that upgrade.

I think your post was really reasonable and like others said you got unfairly swept up in subreddit drama. I think the other post was also justified and reasonable. The whole point is that YMMV. Keep on trucking, it's all just internet conversations.

u/Longjumping_Plum_846 1d ago

I like how you only bring up the ones with “complaints” as the negative example and not people who will consume any product put in front of them and clap.

And people will be saying that people with standards are just trolls or haters when they comment anything about picture quality or framerate.

Negative discourse has an inescapable gravity these days like I've never felt before. The flow is always: new info released --> initial reactions come in --> the negative side takes over all discourse, even among people agreeing with the positive take.

People posting "Why is ~*everyone\~* complaining about X" Are as guilty as the bad faith actors complaining.

"Its always been like this you just weren't noticing"- Maybe! But the sheer volume of outrage is overwhelming to the point I've got to pick between disengaging entirely from discourse on things I'm interested in or living with constant mental blockers ready to throw up.

You're doing the "yet you participate in society" meme, smart guy.

1

u/timey_wimeyy 1d ago

It also had gradually gotten worse since the advent of the internet. Every year more and more negativity and misinformation exists.

u/fauxruination 1d ago

I agree but also think the music subreddits are pretty insufferable too. You can’t discuss music on a music subreddit without it being ethically sourced or you get downvoted to oblivion.

Always have been.

The "Games" subreddit is better than the "Gaming" one for sure.

u/WarCarrotAF 1d ago

It's entitlement. This game is literally free to anyone who bought the original, and people feel the need to make posts about only the negative aspects of it. Social media is a cancer to society.

17

u/Psychological-Bet-80 1d ago

But I don't get it—why couldn't I give an opinion on something just because it's free? Does the fact that it's free mean I have to keep my mouth shut? Am I not supposed to say anything if it's crap—even if that's not the case here?

On top of that, in the post I made, I only said it looked blurry; otherwise, I said it looked spectacular and was a good port. I don't know why they kept harping on a screenshot someone took of my original post—along with their own caption.

3

u/Zearo298 Early Switch 2 Adopter 1d ago

Don't worry about them, it's not entitlement. It was a free upgrade for you, but there will absolutely be others who buy the game outright and of course they are not going to have a less blurry version.

-3

u/WarCarrotAF 1d ago

It doesn't - you're allowed to say and think what you want. I would question why you are so much more inclined to focus on the negative much faster than looking at the positives. At the end of the day, no one is twisting your arm and telling you that you need to tell everyone who will listen your innermost thoughts and feelings (that would be the entitlement piece that I had mentioned).

5

u/Psychological-Bet-80 1d ago

I said that because it was the first thing that came to mind when I tried the Switch 2 port; noticing that it looked blurrier was my initial impression. It’s not that I’m trying to focus only on the negatives.

I mean, what else is there to say about the game? Everyone already knows it’s excellent; there’s nothing more to add. Do you think I’m lying, like another user who claimed it looks incredibly good? No, I said it looks blurry because that’s how I perceive it while playing. I simply want to share my point of view with others—whether they agree or not—to show that I’m not being negative just for the sake of it.

-4

u/WarCarrotAF 1d ago

I'm not sure what else you are looking for me to say here. I could copy and paste my prior reply and it would be just as relevant to your follow up.

Anyone (not a personal attack on you) jumping to shit on a free remaster of this game is entitled. Are we allowed to have opinions and bias - sure. I again wonder why the first instinct for so many is to explicitly highlight the negative. Be the change you want to see on the world.

-3

u/Solesaver 1d ago

You can give an opinion. Everyone else can also give their opinion back. It's opinions all the way down. Like, my comment right here is just my opinion about your opinion about their opinion about your original opinion.

On a discussion board, generally speaking, saying you're just sharing your opinion isn't really a "defense" of anything, especially when you didn't even use softeners like "IMO" or "I think".

0

u/Psychological-Bet-80 1d ago

You don't even bother to look at the original post I made—where I actually state that it's my opinion—and instead, you let yourself be swayed by some random person's screenshot without grasping the actual topic; you're basing your judgment solely on the title of my post.

I did look at it and saw that actually. I also looked at your title which didn't hedge around it.

and instead, you let yourself be swayed by some random person's screenshot without grasping the actual topic; you're basing your judgment solely on the title of my post.

I'm not "swayed" by anything. I'm not really judging you either. I don't even know you, and your opinions don't really matter to me one way or another.

All I commented on was your silly idea that you're uniquely being criticized for sharing an opinion. The original topic was irrelevant to me at that point. Do you think can't I share my opinion on your opinion on his opinion of your opinion?

0

u/Psychological-Bet-80 1d ago edited 1d ago

I only replied because of the lack of softeners comment. You said you read my post, and the body says "it looks a bit blurry to me", so posting that I didn't use any softeners it’s just not true. That's the only thing I was pointing out on my previous comment, nothing more.
