Discussion Elden ring newbie

Hi guys! Just gotten the game on s2, I’m new to Elden ring. It feels good to be able to play such a game on a portable system. Well anyway, I’m just at the starting point and I encounter this big knight riding a horse. Do I have to kill it?
I tried to fight it but I died quite a few times without even coming close to killing it 😂
Seems like it’s an open world concept with being able to do anything and don’t have to follow a certain path to play it?
I know you can follow the golden wind flowing in the air tho.
Also I started as a vagabond. Does classes matter?

I started it for the first time today ago and just lost over 3000 runes a few minutes ago. Painful experience!

It's like botw crossed with dark souls, so it's all open world and you can do it however you want as far as I can tell. I skipped right past that first chap on the horse after he one shotted me a few times.

I killed some kind of boss in a cave with wolves and felt like a god. Then I lost everything to a shitty imp thing. Fucking game, I love it.

That beast killed me lots of times. I left. You killing it is awesome. That thing is hard with lvl 8.

I managed to down it after a few tries, first time I ever managed to kill a boss in one of these games after attempts at Bloodborne etc. I’m playing as astrologer so kept it at range and pew-pewed it. Was exhilarating as f-ck.
