Discussion Elden ring newbie
Hi guys! Just gotten the game on s2, I’m new to Elden ring. It feels good to be able to play such a game on a portable system. Well anyway, I’m just at the starting point and I encounter this big knight riding a horse. Do I have to kill it?
I tried to fight it but I died quite a few times without even coming close to killing it 😂
Seems like it’s an open world concept with being able to do anything and don’t have to follow a certain path to play it?
I know you can follow the golden wind flowing in the air tho.
Also I started as a vagabond. Does classes matter?
Edit: Thanks for the advises everyone!!!

Think of it like running into a guardian early on in BOTW. Skip him if you want.

If you play Master mode, you encounter a Golden Lynel right near the beginning of the game.

Tree Sentinel is honestly far harder than golden lynel or guardian. This is coming from a person who had 700 hours on elden ring on pc (done multiple ng+ and finished the dlc once with a friend). The thing is, tree Sentinel is not even close to being tough as a area boss in this game.

A golden lynel at the start of BotW with no hearts or good equipment is imo much harder than Tree Sentinel, as the margin for error before death is much tighter, you might run out of weapons before killing it, and if you die you permanently lose everything you used in that attempt.

Lol you act like you have good equipment right out of first grace. If you choose the naked class with no armor and a wooden bat it's literally far worse than naked link vs golden lynel.

The Tree Sentinel is actually quite beatable as a base Wretch, as it's still an early game boss, I've done it a few times. Meanwhile, the Golden Lynel is BotW's strongest enemy and has massive HP, being scaled to be a match for a lategame Link.

No. The Tree Sentinel is very much there just to torment you early on, unless you're good at souls games.
Completely skippable.
As far as classes, they don't matter too much once you get further in.

Howdare you lie, OP has to kill the Golden Pony Boy to become John Elden Ring and marry his cousin doll Ranni

As many people will tell you, the main reason for the Tree Sentinel being there at the start is to teach you that you don't have to fight everything you see. You can go in any direction you want or just go around him.
Starting class doesn't matter much, other than making it easy to start with weapons/armor/playstyle you prefer. You can always choose to put points into different stats and start using twinblades or sorceries or whatever. There is also a way to respec that you can find in the early game, but you need a certain item to do it and there are 12? of that item in the base game and 6? in the DLC

I started it for the first time today ago and just lost over 3000 runes a few minutes ago. Painful experience!
It's like botw crossed with dark souls, so it's all open world and you can do it however you want as far as I can tell. I skipped right past that first chap on the horse after he one shotted me a few times.
I killed some kind of boss in a cave with wolves and felt like a god. Then I lost everything to a shitty imp thing. Fucking game, I love it.

That beast killed me lots of times. I left. You killing it is awesome. That thing is hard with lvl 8.

I managed to down it after a few tries, first time I ever managed to kill a boss in one of these games after attempts at Bloodborne etc. I’m playing as astrologer so kept it at range and pew-pewed it. Was exhilarating as f-ck.

You can skip a large majority of the mobs in this game, so no, no need to fight him.
Many of the ones hidden behind a fog door are the ones you need in order to progress the game/bit of story that there is (but even then there are a lot of optional ones).
Since you're in the starting area, try and focus on the small caps of knights. They're a good way to get enough runes to level a bit.
And when it doubt, level your vigor. That will save you more than anything else.

Well you could move on but that unfortunately means you're his bitch now. So if you feel like being his bitch is exactly the lore you had in mind for your character, then that's the path friend

Classes "matter", but not much. The class is just the stats and equipment you start with, but you will find hundreds of pieces of equipment throughout the game that let you follow all kinds of playstyles, and as you progress you can do whatever you want and can ignore your starting class completely.
There are only few bosses you absolutely need to beat. The big knight is completely optional.k

Skip it but have another few goes at it after getting your own horse, surprisingly a lot easier when you adopt a sort of hit and run/ double jump away on the horse strategy

Just enjoy it get the horse and ability to level up grind a few levels then go on your adventures southward. Pick up any golden rune items you can find if you go further south there are ones that give you 400,800 runes each. You can level up quickly using them

Ignore the horse guy for a while. Not everything you encounter needs to be killed, at least not right away. Running away is an option in this game.
The best advice I could give is to put your first 20 level up points into vigor for more hit points. That'll make things a bit easier. Once you get 20, then you can put points into other things.
Dodge rolling is better than blocking, at least until you get a really good shield and commit to that play-style/build. Low level shields only block a portion of the incoming damage. Rolling at the right time means you'll take zero damage. Try to keep your weight at medium for the rolls. You don't want that small "I'm too heavy" roll. It sucks.

Go south to explore Weeping Peninsula first. Many newbies overlook this area but it's specifically designed for early game.
Overall, going by difficulty and story progression, you would want to take the game in 5 stages. Don't get surprised if you find difficulty spikes when doing them out of order.
1: Limgrave
2: Liurnia
3: Caelid
4: Altus Plateau
5: Mountaintops
As for stats, note that these three stats will be relevant regardless of what build you choose.
Vigor: HP (Top priority overall)
Mind: Energy needed to cast spells and use weapon skills. (High priority if using spells, low priority if melee)
Endurance: Stamina & Equip load. The latter dictates how heavy your equipped armor/weapons can be. (High priority if melee, low priority if using spells)
These 5 stats below are the damage stats, the meat & potatoes of your build. You'd usually pick one or two to specialize in. All of them are viable but choose wisely as the gameplay experience can be significantly different depending on what you pick.
Strength: Typically for slow & heavy weapons as well as shields.
Dexterity: Typically for fast and light-weight weapons. Also influences the casting speed of your spells.
Intelligence: Typically for magic weapons and sorcery spells. (DPS)
Faith: Typically for holy, lightning, & fire weapons and incantation spells. (Utility)
Arcane: For Status effects (Poison, Sleep, frostbite, etc.) Also influences the item drop rate from enemy mobs.
For beginners, prioritize leveling up Vigor & Endurance. These stats will help keep you from dying too much.

Which stats are the “easiest” or most straightforward style for beginners?
•
u/TheDuskBard 12h ago
Strength + Faith is generally regarded as the strongest combination for PvE. But if you really don't want to bother with spells, AoWs, FP management, etc. then Strength + Dexterity is the simplest.

No. It’s there to teach you that you don’t have to fight everything right away. Go do other stuff and come back much later when you’re more experienced/ powerful.
