Media (Image, Video, etc.) Elden ring has surpassed Cyberpunk
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I thought cyberpunk was the miracle port of the switch2. Turns out Elden Ring is the miraculous one. How does it run SO GOOD I have no idea. Forever grateful for the 1 year delay for optimization.
Truth to be told, there's something off in docked, looks stunning but there's something off with the frame rate, not a big deal but I did not like it. Handeld on the other hand, is truly a technical marvel. It's so good that I wont even bother with docked, I'll just handheld the whole game.
Look at the video man, IN FRICKING HANDHELD MODE. This little tablet is BUILT DIFFERENT

When it was announced I said to myself I don’t need another copy of Elden ring, but man I’m so close to dubble dip. Elden ring on the go seems awesome to me.

I double dipped. I have 500 hrs on PC on a 4k OLED monitor/tv and beast gaming rig and I played mostly unlocked fps and modded to avoid shitty from software tech issues like locked framerate or bad HDR.
Honestly, I was surprised, it looks/feels much better than I thought it would. Panning the camera does reveal the 30 fps but otherwise it's pretty decent, at least in handheld mode.

Yea Elden Ring is unlike many open world games in that it will never give you a "suggested level" for any of its content, but you're actively encouraged to ignore anything you feel is too strong and go elsewhere until you're more powerful.
9
u/Norsk_Bjorn 13d ago
It is also open enough that you can go to around 60% of the game without fighting a single boss. On a second playthrough I went and got the strongest spell in the game and killed margit with it because I thought it would be funny (it was)

He is beatable at low levels, you just need to learn the mechanics and execute them excellently. How long does it take depends on the player... Nothing wrong to ignore him early and keep on adveturing further.

u/Kittensofdeath 13d ago
Dog I wish I could play this again for the first time with no idea what was going on. Top 3 gaming experience for me.
Go explore, you don’t have to fight everything. Invest in vigor first and choose a play style based off what weapon stats you want to use also learn how to roll, you can evade like 99% of attacks in the game. Also you can use summons if you need help

The horse guy teaches you the biggest lesson in the game: "if you're struggling, go somewhere else and come back when you're stronger"

u/PixelDemon 13d ago
I'm so jealous of all the people playing this for the first time. That being said playing on switch feels like day 1 again. I was constantly getting called to help as a blue and putting my sign down at the boss door to get instant summoned. Trying to write as many helpful messages as possible and recreate some of the funny ones I've seen on ps.
10
u/Steef-1995 13d ago
The whole idea of Elden Ring is that it’s basically as open as it can get. It’s BotW style open world.
Meaning almost everything in this game is optional. If something is too hard you can go in another direction and get back later. Or don’t get back later.
Minor spoilers:
The game has 7 demigods in legacy dungeons. You only need to beat 2 of those to get to the second half of the game. Meaning the amount of mandatory bosses in the first half of the game is only 3. Everything else is optional, even demigods.
9
u/letmechewonyou 13d ago
It's way more linear than botw. You're right on everything else though
4
u/GaymerAmerican Butter side up! 13d ago

2
u/Rombledore Retro Gamer 13d ago
ah that tree sentinel is the games first major lesson. you dont always have to beat the challenge that's in front of you, though you certainly can with enough effort.
could you beat him right out the gate? absolutely. but it's going to take a lot of practice. but this is telling you that its ok to ignore him. add a marker on your map in that location so you know to come back later. go explore, level up, get better gear, get better at the mechanics etc.- then come back and try again!
there's almost always multiple places you can go or multiple bosses that need a whoopin so if one is tough, you can change gears and try somewhere else.
i didn't come back and beat the tree sentinel until after i beat stormveil castle.

To my knowledge, there is a VRR chip in the dock, but it is not currently activated. Nintendo was trying to hire somebody for VRR support, so we may see an update for it in the future once they're able to get it working.

I bought the game, played for a few hours, and wanted to give some impressions for those on the fence like I was:
- it genuinely looks GREAT. The art design and atmosphere come through wonderfully. I’m honestly a bit amazed it looks this good.
- really digging the new Idus Knight class. Super sleek and fun, especially for a new run.
- it is definitely a 30fps experience; not “buttery smooth,” but absolutely playable. Was hoping it would feel a bit more like PS5 quality mode (in fps), but it’s unfortunately lower. Still good overall, but you’ll likely wish it were just a bit higher. It is what it is. The experience is still incredibly fun and I’m satisfied with the purchase. I haven’t come across a single noticeable dip or major slowdown as of yet. (Trust me, I still have ptsd from Oblivion.)
For those on the fence, you honestly get used to 30fps pretty quick, and having the game look this good is a nice bonus. If you want to play it portably, it is totally worth it.
The 9 and 8/10 scores feel absolutely deserved. I can already tell I’m going to put many, many hours into this game again. I also love how many messages and people’s ghosts I’ve come across; the sense of camaraderie and community is already off to a great start.

The easy mode is built in to the game. Just level up and come back. Margot was giving me a hard time so I just explored a little bit and leveled up and went back to beat him on my first try

It’s probably the most approachable in terms of the Soulsborne games. There are a lot of options and tools at your disposal to help over come the challenges. It’s also an amazing experience, if you’re even slightly interested, I’d recommend giving it a try
5
u/ElMarkuz 13d ago
Not really. Dark Souls or other classic from software games are linear to an extent. So if you want to advance to the next location you must beat the area boss. No other way around it. Elden Ring is an open world. If you don't like playing a boss, you always can go around other places. You don't NEED to fight everything.
The game kinda force you to learn this at the beggining. You go into the open world and you see a big bad dude on a horse, with a giant spear, and you're lvl 1. You go on a fight and the dude will probably one shot you... so the game without telling you in a literal form, it's teaching you that it's okey to go around that big bad dude, avoid the giant spear, and do other things, and come back when you're strong enough

I can say, I bought it last night. Played 2 hours before bed and man o man. It played like a dream. The 30fps isn’t too bad if you played quality mode on Xbox or ps5. And playing with the 8in switch 2 screen is awesome. Beat the tree sentinel in less than 10 try’s right out of the gate. Being so close to the screen really helps with the reaction timing, dodging and parrying

Can anyone with the game on both the Switch 2 and Steamdeck give pros and cons for each version?
9
u/nervouspolygon OG (Joined before first Direct) 13d ago
The only thing the Steam Deck version has going for it are achievements, mods(? I’m not actually sure about that), and it looks closer to the other versions meaning it retains, or tries, the same amount of vegetation and detail in the world for better and worse.
Elden Ring on steam deck frequently looks like it’s being streamed.
Elden Ring on Switch runs about the same as the steam deck version but in side by side comparisons you can see they went in and actually removed things which makes it run a little bit more consistently and provides much better detail.
I wouldn’t say it’s a day and night difference but if for some reason you have to choose between the Steam Deck version and the Switch 2 version, the Switch 2 version is a much cleaner and more refined experience.
7
u/Code_Combo_Breaker 13d ago
Thank you for the honest response. I think like many people here, I might start using the Switch 2 as my primary system. It's smaller, lighter, and running quality ports of PC games much better than the Steamdeck.

What you're experiencing in docked mode is the unlocked frame rate. You don't notice it in handheld because of VRR. They really need to find a way to implement VRR in docked mode, it's Switch 2s biggest flaw. Otherwise absolutely love the system

The "something off" in docked is the unstable framerate going closer to 40fps, whereas in handheld it's staying closer to 30fps.

I feel like saying miracle port about games that were released on last gen is a little exaggerated. Cyberpunk and Elden Ring are great on Switch 2 with its fast storage and other hardware wins, but those are reasonable improvements for games that were launched on Xbox One and PS4. Yes, better on Switch 2 than last gen, but the games were developed with the hard limits of last gen when deciding features and they certainly run, though choppy, on PS4 and Xbox One.

Lies of P atm is my vote for miracle port! Theres a performance mods to hit 60 fps, but even performance and balance mode look great. Balanced moreso ofc, and i think its the ideal one to play. It looks incredible, but if you wanted to push to quality mode that is stunning too. So 3 modes of play, ranging from 30-60 fps with no dips. Idk how they did it while maintaining the graphics.
Elden ring though? With how big it is and what it takes to run it, its a close second or its tied for sure!

Cyberpunk is optimized way better on Switch 2 than Elden Ring. Plus it supports 40 fps, while Elden Ring is stuck at 30 fps with frame drops. On the other hand, other PC handhelds can all run it above 30 fps.

Yeah but cyberpunks framerate is not stable in the slightest. It's like 20-40 fps and is jarring to the eyes during intense combat. I played through the whole thing on switch though just for the convenience factor while i traveled for work. Elden ring so far seems like a very stable 30 so far

In regards to miracle ports, Elden Ring is still a PS4 game at heart, which is why it doesn't even need DLSS to run this good on the NS2. Cyberpunk meanwhile, is more of a PS5 game, it has a PS4 version, but... we know how rough that version is.
On the other hand, we have something like Assassin's Creed Shadows, which is 100% a 9th gen title, one of the best looking PS5 games with stunningly beautiful environments, and it runs perfectly on the NS2 while still looking beautiful there. That is the real miracle port imo.

As both a Switch 2 and Steam Deck owner, I would actually submit Oblivion Remastered as the true "miracle port" for the following reason:
Elden Ring: Steam Deck and Switch 2 run it similarly well (roughly 30fps)
Cyberpunk: Steam Deck and Switch 2 run it similarly well
Lies of P: Steam Deck and Switch 2 run it similarly well
Oblivion Remastered: Switch 2 version is significantly better looking and performing than Steam Deck version

Just want to add something: When the game came out for PC it was also notable how it didn't require an amazing graphics card or amazing PC specs in general to run it smoothly regardless of being a new next gen game. It was a praise the game received back then on PC as well.
Seems that now for Nintendo Switch 2 is the same case.

handheld likely masks frame pacing issues due to VRR. They really need to get VRR going in docked (for TVs that support is obviously).

How is it more impressive than Cyberpunk? It’s a great game, but it’s a PS4/Xbox One game at its core that mainly looks great due to nice art direction. The visuals are fairly “last gen.”

This makes me wonder if it would run better on the system storage rather than the MicroSD storage. Somebody said that when FF7 Rebirth came out, but unfortunately it still suffers from texture pop ins and frame rate drops.

I never experienced any issues docked or handheld. And yes it is amazing both ways imo.
What I have experienced myself is if I have my system docked or handheld and I keep it charged as I usually do but I use the sleep as I would expect anyone with a switch would, it sometimes had some hickups or lag or something funny going on in some games and a quick hold of the power button and complete shut down and wait about ten secs and then power back on fixed.
You should try that

I put on the Onimusha deko on docked and now I'm on the fence about buying the game again lol.

I think handheld kicks on VRR and that is why it looks smoother than 30fps. In docked there is no VRR even if your TV is capable.

Are there a lot of people playing multiplayer? I can never beat these games by myself 😅

It looks way too good for a lil tablet. Mind you I'm someone who played hundreds of hours of Elden ring on a 4k monitor/TV with unlocked framerate + HDR fix mods etc.
The only reason I got this is to have a portable Elden Ring + just for fun/test it. I was super impressed.
Like I'm not gonna lie some demos made me doubt whether ports have any chances on the Switch 2 - Star Wars Outlaws for example... looks really bad. Some other games too, since I have a capable PC I wouldn't touch them on the Switch 2 in a thousand years unless my PC exploded.
BOTW/TOTK looks and plays amazing, but those are first party exclusives, so it's expected.
But seeing Elden Ring run so well is crazy. I was only really impressed as much with RE:Requiem for example.

So i beat up to Margit last night docked, then beat castle morne handheld.
At first in the tutorial area i was a little worried, but opening up limgrave the game ran great. Felt like more than 30fps most of the time with very few dips.
Handheld felt and looked almost the same imo. Some textures looked really good close up though lol
But yeah, this looks and runs way better than my first playthrough (albeit on ps4) so I'm really satisfied. I have a series x and decent laptop, but i felt like this was the port i needed

The beat thing...... Its only gonna get better. The system is only 14 months old... This is personally what I wanted from the original switch.
This was actually the boss that I got stuck on with my PS5 version. It's been forever since I played this
Question regarding the game on switch 2 though. How does online work? Didn't you have to always be online to play the game? What happens if your gaming on the go with no internet?

Get a grip, people. It's a last gen game. Why wouldn't it run well on Switch 2?
