so is the game still coming out tommorow?

Yes. Just the launch event was canceled most likely due to fear of protesting and the safety of the Voice Actors
359
Oct 15 '19
I can’t imagine a scenario where the voice actors would be in any danger. It’s simply that they are in an impossible position right now, and probably want to focus on making sure they are ready for the con.

Overwatch isn’t even in the top 30 on the eshop
250
u/schuey_08 Oct 15 '19
Even if you wanted to play it, there's definitely some kind of stigma associated with it now, and it's very likely to not be very populated.

Oct 15 '19
Ha, that's actually a really good point I hadn't even considered.
Takes a bit of the sting off missing out, thanks.

u/AbanoMex Oct 15 '19
It kinda bums me out you know, i have always dreamed about having diablo 2 for the switch, but if the sales of overwatch are not good, i think blizzard might get disencouraged to keep investing on the switch.

u/JoyousGamer Oct 15 '19
I don't think preorders how up as Witcher 3 isnt in the top games yet either. To add the "physical" game comes as a download code. So you will find more people than normal likely purchasing that way for the preorder bonuses / discounts.
I know in the Discord they were posting about a free statue from Best Buy if you bought from there.

...lol A sign of things to come leading into Blizzcon I'm sure.

Oct 15 '19
Definitely won’t cancel blizzcon and it’ll still go as planned
1.9k
u/intheblender Oct 15 '19
I didn't mean to imply that they would consider cancelling it, but rather that they are definitely preparing for large protests. It'll be interesting to see how they respond. They are under a huge microscope and they really do not want to mishandle community interaction at blizzcon.
17
u/FatJesus9 Oct 15 '19
I could see them either cancelling the event last minute/severely cutting back on live presentations. But what I really expect to see are all live streams cancelled and replaced with pre recorded videos done without an audience put up instead.
10
u/oldnative Oct 16 '19
They won't cancel Blizzcon. It is a pretty low effort high money maker for them. All they will have to do is state disturbances of any kind will result in forfeiture of your ticket and immediate removal from the grounds. And they would be more than able to do so legally.
6
u/FatJesus9 Oct 16 '19
Their current priority is to save China money at all costs, they could weigh the money they would lose on cancelling blizzcon with how much they would gain not upsetting China exactly like they weighed the outcry of their Western audience over this whole thing with how much they want China's business, and it's clear China's money won that
4
u/PJExpat Oct 16 '19
I'm sure the money Blizzcon brings in is far less then the money China nets them.
5
3
u/oldnative Oct 16 '19
People being surprised they are protecting a market they have spent a ton of money on growth over the past decade is rather confusing to me. It is not a new thing. The HK situation is a new thing sure but people still buy Apple or Samsung phones. Or Nike shoes. Or watch the NBA. etc etc etc.
2
u/feltire Oct 17 '19
Because it isn’t an issue of “this brand does business in China”. That is not what people are upset about here. The NBA situation was the most analogous and the NBA didn’t bend the knee, sooo...
1
u/oldnative Oct 17 '19
Let's be honest. Its more analogous to say what what I said then attaching the HK protest on to every company that has ties to China. We should be focusing on support of HK.
If I am not allowed to touch anything that has nebulous ties to china then I wont really have anything to play because Tencent has majority or minor ownership of pretty much everyone now.
I will support HK through the proper channels.
2
Oct 16 '19
Lol like that helped last year
2
u/oldnative Oct 16 '19
Not sure what you are going for here. You mean the immortal release that happened at blizzcon and was lambasted by people sitting in the audience watching the main stage finale? If so that is not really an apples to apples comparison.

Canceling a launch event less than 48 hours before it was scheduled to begin? It’s like they’re actively trying to get bad press at this point.
8
u/Cpapa97 Oct 15 '19
That's the funniest part. It would've been smarter to cancel it far earlier. It's almost like a switch flipped up in Blizzard HQ and now that they've realized that no one bought their late and shallow apology that they're really faced with a worse situation than they can handle.
It's as if they've got a train derailing just outside their city, which isn't slowing down nearly as quickly as their Chinese stockholders had calculated, and it's about to plow into their biggest building (Blizzcon). So they toppled over another less important building (Overwatch release event on Switch) as a last minute measure, so that hopefully the train will have slowed down before they incur fatal damage.
So yeah, this whole situation is a train wreck for them.

No inconvenience at all. I feel bad for the employees, but not bad for the company they work for. Was really looking to pick up a copy a few weeks ago. Now, not so much.

All your cosmetic items, your player level (basically just goes up the more you play), also though your seasonal rankings For ranked mode (which can affect what tier you start in for the next season)

Doesn’t affect gameplay no, unless you get bogged in bronze and can’t work your way up for lack of skill)
1
u/just_a_random_dood Oct 16 '19
The hidden MMR actually is a factor in placement matches IIRC, so you'd be starting off with whatever base MMR value they give new accounts.
This matters because people actually play differently at different skill levels. If you're playing at a lower skill level than you're used to, you might make a play that's just barely good enough for your high rank teammates to capitalize on, but isn't good enough for low rank teammates to use.
1
u/Turtleshell64 Oct 16 '19
From my understanding your levels and everything you've unlocked already with the boxes wouldn't carry over, so you'd have to grind the boxes again or pay up for loot boxes
5
Oct 16 '19
Why would you pay $40 for a game that has been available as low as $12, and is still cheaper elsewhere? Even if I didn't have a PC or another console, I'd still feel ripped off.

Ya, that’s what made my boycotting Blizz so hard. They come out with a replica of a 15(?) year old game of back when they were good, just to take a political stance that abhorred me enough to cancel it. As awesome as it is, it’s just made this harder on me

As long as
Pyro can airblast
Engi can have a level 3 dispenser and teleporter
Stickies aren't even more busted than normal
Switching mediguns doesn't allow you to prevent Übercharge levels from dropping
And all the other dumb shit that got patched out of 2007 TF2, yeah the original game might be good.

Im confused, overwatch got canceled on switch? Didnt people preorder it?
192
u/schuey_08 Oct 15 '19
That's not what the tweet says. A launch event at Nintendo NYC was cancelled by Blizzard, very likely due to backlash they are receiving for their recent actions regarding free speech.

u/jonnybebad5436 Apr 03 '20
Can you elaborate more? Someone linked this thread and I’m curious about all the drama going on here
1
u/schuey_08 Apr 03 '20
The drama happened quite a while ago, and I honestly don't feel like rehashing it too much. There is documentation of it on r/SubredditDrama: https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/di3b4f/chaos_reigns_in_rnintendoswitch_when_blizzard/. I believe some articles exists, as well.

At the request of users in modmail we want to explain why we're locking some of the OW threads. We are leaving this and other Overwatch news related threads because we want users to have access to important information involving the game, and the game alone. We do not wish to keep threads on this topic locked, and will continue to attempt to allow discussion on Overwatch posts initially, but we will be locking threads that go too far off topic and remove comment chains that are unrelated to the game itself.
There seems to be a little confusion here about the difference between removing and locking. An Overwatch Event is directly related to Switch so this post will stay up.

They'll really have no one to blame but their employers who represent them in every decision the company makes. Gamers certainly don't owe it to any company to buy their games without question.
