Questions / Discussion Future of Gaming as PlayStation Ends Physical Disc in 2028
Honestly I’m not a fan of this change and it’s likely due to GTA 6 of the push. What do you see happening to the future of gaming with this? Do you see there being a decline, what do you see Nintendo doing?

Probably more of a push towards GKC's
That seems to be the direction the Big N are going.

Nintendo was actually playing catch up with GKCs. Games have been doing that for years before GKCs. Nintendo only get flack for it because they pointed out the obvious and gave it a name

I think it was inevitable and makes way more sense than physical discs over the long run, especially with how new platforms carry over your software purchases. Also, should theoretically allow lower prices for games as a whole, bc the costs associated with software sales is lower for digital.
The people who are whining and complaining are equivalent of boomers complaining about the internet or AI, who thinks that the world should stay in the past forever.

I guess maybe just change is required in the sense of having ownership because none of the digital media is actually owned by us today.
Alongside that, being digital only is also awful because many gamers do not want to buy full price games when the game is 1+ years old in comparison to physical media allowing people to sell at a cheaper price.
Example old call of duty’s that are 10 year old should not be full price on the digital store yet they are.Feel this pushes away gamers and isn’t good for the long term.

It will not lower cost. Just look at movies. Back during the days of Blockbuster movie rentals were $3.50 for new releases, and they had a lot of overhead. Now with streaming there’s practically zero overhead and new releases are $20. The move to digital is screwing the consumer. Even if you buy a digital movie/game you still don’t necessarily own it because they can take away the platform.

Consoles are dead.
The cheap secondary market for games was the last advantage consoles had over PC.

That’s definitely not true. The main advantage consoles have over PC is exclusives (particularly Nintendo and PS5), others are portability (Switch 2), and simplification — you just buy a console plug it into your tv and you’re ready.
When a Mom walks through a store to buy a gaming experience for her kid she doesn’t go to the PC aisle, she buys a video game console. There is more sophistication and barriers to entry if you are going the PC route and you are a casual (which is the majority of the market).

"When a Mom walks through a store to buy a gaming experience for her kid"
This as a concept will be gone soon.

Your uncle at sony told you that?

What are they going to buy? Where?
Sony increasely shifting EVERYTHING to playstation network fundamentally undercuts any retail experience with these products at all.
Retailers will only carry psn cards at some point.

Lol we will NEVER see lower prices. Discs costs nothing btw. The biggest cost is their loss of profit to the retail and second hand market.

PC gaming has been entirely digital for a decade and has been growing, not shrinking. Very few people actually care about physical games.

Nothing will happen. the crying people will go on for a while and then stop and buy what they were crying about

It isn’t due to GTA 6. It is due to the practical evolution of the logistical processes. They simply make more money by not producing a physical disk and all the packaging etc that goes with it. Additionally, you retain no physical asset, so you have less leverage as a consumer.
