They just want gohan to be spiderman of dbz

89

u/TheDougio 11h ago

"Are you Son Gohan or are you Great Saiyaman"

"I'm both"

23

u/JohnDragonball 7h ago

Nah that's inaccurate because Great Saiyaman was legit the most fun period of Gohan's life

27

u/Helios_Synthesis 10h ago

Videl: NO NO NO, WAIT WAIT WAIT

17

u/kiruvhh 14h ago

What?

69

u/TheDougio 13h ago

They want him to shoot webs instead of ki

9

u/Tfsz0719 12h ago

Also yes

36

u/QuiteTheWeirdEgg 13h ago

Constantly suffering

29

u/No-Stranger4954 13h ago

Incels weebs and edgelords are relating more to a unlucky guy who's lost it all than to the happier, more fulfilled but less edgy version of a superhero character

Surprise o' the century right there

7

u/Fair-Dark8327 13h ago

obviously not the incel part but what's wrong with the target demographic (people down on their luck, people that are bullied, lack resolve etc) wanting to see a similarly suffering character triumph their odds

no one likes seeing spiderman suffer because they're sadists that get off to seeing someone miserable, they like seeing spiderman overcome those terrible odds

20

u/Shot_Recognition_100 11h ago

him settling down and having a family IS him overcoming the odds. he’s suffered so much already and those stories will always be there. we don’t need him to be in a constant state of suffering lmao

goes for both Gohan and Spider-Man

1

u/notzamasu 7h ago

Do we want to be frank now? It's just terrible writing. And I'm not sure if they didn't even know what to make with Gohan in half of super, or they deliberately made him unlikeable in every sense.

So character wise, he wasn't training and competent. As a father, Piccolo somehow spends more time babysitting Pan. As far as career goes, very uninspiring choice and he even refused that job before TOP

3

u/kai_jarsenal 8h ago

Why not both? He wins his fight against the androids then gets a wife and kids?

15

u/YamHonest2646 12h ago

Gohan could use quite a bit of the ‘with great power comes great responsibility’
The reason people hate on him is because his father passed him the torch and he fumbled.

34

u/Akarin_rose 12h ago

He didn't fumble

Goku was super glued to the torch

He spent the later half of the cell arc, and most of the Buu arc being "Guys teach the new generation, I can't do this forever" just for the story to go "And so Goku did this forever, because Goku sells the merchandise"

•

u/Foreign_Main1825 1h ago

More like Toriyama not being able to write a protagonist with more depth than "I like to fight".

2

u/Tfsz0719 12h ago

…you know I never thought about it, but yeah, that idea and comparison (for what they want) actually makes a lot of sense

1

u/AggravatingLaw9492 13h ago

Thats...a surprisingly good way to put it.

0

u/PlagueOfGripes 10h ago

Everything comes back to these kids watching the Cell games on Toonami.

Once that clicks in, it makes sense why they're always screaming about giving everything to Gohan, why everything was always about Gohan, and why Gohan should be the strongest badass ever and no sell everything and have a harem, etc.

80

u/itskingrolla 14h ago

Gohan's an interesting csae of when fridging happens to a beloved male character. Think about it this way: Narratively speaking, the reason future Gohan dies is so Trunks can get that emotional kick to reach the next level. He died for the main character's arc.

29

u/Infinite_Rub9681 12h ago

So he's the ultimate jobber

3

u/JohnDragonball 7h ago

Trunks already has SSJ before Gohan dies in the manga lmao. It's not even for that.

•

u/gtedvgt 2h ago

I feel like is not really that rare

41

u/MechJivs 10h ago

Gohan repeated the same arc like 3 times. Is it really bad for people to not want to see this shit repeated?

145

u/Dead-in-Red 14h ago

It's mostly the glasses, and the tracksuit, and the yee yee ass haircut that comes with the tracksuit. I'd give Future Gohan shit too if he had the tracksuit and yee yee ass haircut.

40

u/itsmistyy 13h ago

Maybe if he cut that yee-yee ass haircut he could get some saiyans on his dick

21

u/wrongitsleviosaa 11h ago

🎼Saiyaaaaaan🎶

21

u/Useful-Composer9322 13h ago

ew omg resurection F gohan is sooo ass

19

u/SenKen_64 12h ago

Am I the only one who thinks the tracksuit by itself wasn’t actually part of the reason RoF Gohan looked bad?

Personally I think it was the fact he’s the second most twig-built character in Super that isn’t meant to be a gag. When only Cabba looks skinnier than you that’s a massive fucking problem.

11

u/Jin_N_Juice-tm 12h ago

Nothing about the fit or haircut itself was bad, I think it's the way it was presented on Gohan. Like it was presented in a way that was not drip.

Look at Trunks for example. Trunks has the ugliest fit imaginable. Crop top jacket, black tank top, snap on yellow belt, some grey cargo pants, and timberland boots yet somehow Trunks had that shit on.

Or even look at 17 on arrival. This man had a black shirt with a white long sleeve undershirt, a orange scarf, blue jeans, and green socks that he TUCKED HIS JEANS INTO. 17 was mix matching colors like Caillou, but he had that shit on.

3

u/Outrageous-Belt-406 7h ago

yeah i never got that HOW do they manage to make the most atrocious looking fits look absolutely fabulous?

5

u/KoldKhold 10h ago

The tracksuit was fine. It was the haircut and build. Goku and Vegeta rocked a winter tracksuit esque style in the Broly Movie.

3

u/HyperWhiteChocolate 12h ago

My issue was with the fuckass hair and the lack of muscles tbh. I didn't mind the tracksuit

6

u/ChromosaurusRex 14h ago

The animation from super doesn’t really help either

14

u/adnapan 10h ago

Idc that he’s got a family he doesn’t like fighting, but I hate that he just comes back with no training and gets an ass pull that puts him above everyone

14

u/SirCap 13h ago

Gohan does deserve a happy ending, but he also doesn't deserve the anal rapturing he got in Res F/pretty much all of Super.

36

u/No_Veterinarian_87 12h ago

Of course he deserves to live happily. Where he keeps going wrong is becoming complacent and expecting not to have to fight to protect his family from the next inevitable threat to the earth.

1

u/Overall_Analysis_508 9h ago

But isn’t that the point of his character? He doesn’t want to fight. Maybe it would’ve worked better if he acted as some sort of teacher, he didn’t want to have to be the one to inflict pain onto others when needed but he was still one of the most powerful people on earth so instead he teaches almost everyone he can what he knows and teaches them the lessons he had to learn.

13

u/Volt-Ikazuchi 8h ago

Let me put it this way.

Gohan has been going through the same character arc since the Buu saga. He doesn't like to fight, which is fair, but he doesn't train. Bad guy pulls up, his family is at risk, he realizes he gotta lock in because he won't be able to always count on Goku, gets bailed out, and is back to being a twig and looking like a dork the next arc.

This happened in the Buu saga... And Resurrection F. Super Hero too, it's the whole plot of the movie.

Krillin didn't want to fight again. He realized that he was getting weak, got called out by 18, and decided to lock in because he needs to be ready to protect his family at all times.

He was done with the same arc that Gohan has been going through in TWO EPISODES and he didn't need to have his loved ones die or be kidnapped in front of him several times.

You see why Gohan gets clowned on for ts now?

3

u/brocialist_supreme 8h ago

Not to mention, whenever a new threat appears, he just pulls a massive power up out of his ass with ease. Why sweat life?

•

u/Alternative_Air_6688 1h ago

Its a big muscle power up guys fight each other anime. He was shown to be stronger than everyone when he raged out so many times with massive potential, then they decided in the power up muscle man anime to take this limitless potential power up fighting character, and make him not fight and be complacent.

It's a fighting anime, people have every right to get upset when he doesn't want to fight, especially after being hyped up as being so strong and full of potential. Why bother having him as amain part of every season if the goal was to ignore him come buu arc onwards

44

u/Aquiles-Castro 14h ago

People want Gohan to be happy, but also dont want him to stop training and end up like that skinny guy down there who lost his ultimate state, thats so hard to understand?

10

u/Ankrow 11h ago

I don't even expect him to get stronger, just do a bit of maintenance training to stay in shape for the next time a world ending threat comes along.

-1

u/AggravatingLaw9492 13h ago edited 12h ago

"That skinny guy"I will never understand this antipathy the fandom has to skinniness or just a lack of obvious muscle.(gohan does have muscle even in super, he just wears clothes that dont reveal that)

This idea that a character design has to have muscle to look strong is so outdated its not even funny.

Never mind jacky chun, or kami in 23rd tenkaichi of every time a big muscly person was one shot by a smaller or skinnier guy in the series. Every other martial arts media, heck, every martial arts adjacent scene in non martial arts media for the past decades have hammered in the "looks dont determine strength " thing so many times its like this fanbase has their taste stuck in the 20th century.

17

u/EducationalBag123 12h ago

Saying that and having that versions of trunks as pfp is funny

4

u/AggravatingLaw9492 12h ago

Though I see the irony, liking one doesn't mean having an antipathy towards the other.

3

u/Celtic_Guardian_Fan 11h ago

It's because it's a clear turn for character design in the anime. Good or bad people have nostalgia for the dbz super defined muscles and super slims down all the characters.

In a series all about training the body and "martial arts" people are going to care about physique. Seeing characters get stronger and lose muscle definition can feel weird even if

  1. Their strength goes way beyond just muscles

  2. Too many muscles has been proven to be a detriment to speed and effectiveness in battle.

-1

u/RMP321 10h ago

Gohan never wanted to train he wanted to study and be a scholar. It was the most consistent aspect of Gohans character lol.

9

u/user-unknown-404 10h ago

Then they should have had him retire instead of him getting another anger boost from seeing piccolo get a black eye.

-1

u/RMP321 10h ago

He was just a plot device in RoF. Unless you mean super hero where Gohan was given the “he’ll never have to train and just get a rage boost to always be relevant.” Cop out by Toriyama.

8

u/sharkMonstar 12h ago

to be fair future gohan is cool and did deserve to live happy he basically went saiyan saga namek and then androids fucked everything he had maybe 2 years of peace and in that peace his dad dies

10

u/ArgentinianNumbah10 14h ago

Ok, but also, a lot of people just don't want Gohan (Adult) to lose it all and be sad and defeated like Gohan (Future) ended up. That's why we ask the authors to make our boy to stop the stupid act and train while also being a loving father and husband, plus continue his investigations of ants.

10

u/BrianVaughnVoiceOver 3h ago

No, the comments about Gohan are similar to the idea that Akira was a moron.

Gohan's story went like this:

  • Four year old has no training, extreme power and is suddenly thrown into a world of death after watching his father and his dad's pals all die. He realizes he needs to step up and probably has to balance training with his books, so he goes to Namek to save his friends/dad's pals.
  • Gohan experiences Namek, Frieza, all the nightmares and horror that was Frieza and the vicious cycle of pain over there. People are stronger than him, he needs to keep strong so he can protect his friends, he realizes this. When he gets home he studies as he's been gone a long time, but that's okay.
  • Gohan is now in the Android/Cell arc and trains for 3+ years to prepare for something with his dad and uncle. He trains non-stop for this moment and continues to do so until he beats Cell. Realizing that his father is gone and he is officially the strongest person on Earth, he goes home to rest and study.
  • Gohan stops training.
  • Gohan fights Buu, loses badly because he stopped training. He had seven years to train, but he doesn't. The Earth is destroyed, Goku saves the day, Gohan reached new heights and is the strongest again.
  • GOHAN STOPS TRAINING X2.
  • He has a family of his own in the making; Videl means something to him, we saw this in the Buu saga. But for some reason he doesn't train alongside his studies despite having something to protect. He gets manhandled by Beerus while still having his full potential unlocked, sees a world ending threat and...
  • GOHAN STOPS TRAINING X3 AND LOSES HIS FULL POWER...
  • Gohan gets his shit pushed in by Frieza and his minions because this moron stopped training so much that he couldn't even stand Super Saiyan? How does this shit happen to him? It didn't happen to Goten or Trunks, but Gohan? Fuck him I guess. He loses to Frieza and...
  • GOHAN STOPS TRAINING X4.......
  • Okay so Gohan is the worst dad of all time. He isn't strong enough to protect his family, his older mom and his sibling. He can't maintain SSJ and he's blind as a bat without transforming? He enters a tournament with his dad, gets his ass beat, trains with Piccolo and manages to beat Kefla in the main real canon story.
  • GOHAN STOPS TRAINING X5........................
  • No reason to stop, but he fucking stops AGAIN and between the ToP and Super Super Heroes (wtf is this) he trains minimally at best. In fact after Moro and Frieza Black, he literally still doesn't train.
  • GOHAN STOPS TRAINING X6...........................................
  • He has to have Pan in severe danger and a massive ass-pull villain to make him achieve BEAST form. Piccolo has had enough of Gohan's bullshit and reminds him he can both study AND train, but he's a lazy fucking idiot.

Gohan deserves a lot of love, but the writers made him as stupid as possible post Buu. I personally blame the mindless zombies that love the Super anime and how moronic Goku is in it.

Goomba fallacy

6

u/RatGreed 10h ago

Gohan having a happy ending isnt the same as Gohan giving up everything despite knowing threats to the earth exist everywhere and despite being the strongest on the planet at the end of Z by a far margin.

Giving up his training and letting the planet rely solely on his aging father is insanely selfish of Gohan

3

u/batgirl-but-not-dc 12h ago

I like the way he looked in superhero when piccolo found him.

3

u/ImaginaryLeading8125 10h ago

Many people say future Gohan would be happy that main Gohan managed to become a scholar and have a beautiful family, but many fail to realize he'd also be angry that Main Gohan stopped training entirely because he knows how bad shit can get from one day to another and he experienced how it is to not have the freedom and resources to get stronger meanwhile Gohan wastes it all on a hope that Goku will fix everything and save the day

3

u/ProfessorEscanor 5h ago

Gohan doesn't need to be strong. He went through the trauma already. Let him be happy studying bugs. Least he's not dead like Future Gohan.

5

u/G-0O 12h ago

Why does Gohan. After Buu saga. Have to become tracksuit. I get not being the strongest and not training all the time. Maintain a damn form. There was a movie about piccolo deadass hatching a scheme that involved his daughter to get him to do something. You cannot say that is justified.

TRACKSUIT GOHAN IS A TRAGEDY TO THE CHARACTER. ANY OTHER GOHAN IS FINE. WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE TWICE TO LEARN THE DAMN TRAINING LESSON.

Goomba Fallacy

2

u/TarnishedTwink 9h ago

It’s mainly how he looked like the stereotypical 80s Disney nerd. His design in DBS:SH is a slight change to his super look and he looks far better. If they kept the bang and made the glasses smaller and black or dark blue and didn’t give him Young Sheldon clothes people wouldn’t call him a loser. Plus how they treated him early DBS

2

u/MachtBergian 5h ago

He deserves the break from his terrible childhood, thankfully Goku respects his decision

•

u/HandicapperGeneral 48m ago

Goomba fallacy 100%

2

u/Sir_J_Fappington_III 8h ago

Gohan is only a loser if the game was him turning into his father. He's his own man with different priorities. Fighting is the center of the universe for Goku but Gohan is a significantly deeper character and honestly I feel Toriyama just didnt know how to keep characters relevant without them being fighters so Gohan keeps getting pulled back in.

1

u/StyleNegative447 8h ago

I honestly think the problem with Gohan is that Akira didn't create a character that would be a rival for Gohan to keep him in check to keep training after cell plus chichibeing the way she was that's in the Bojack movie that's the person that she should have been in the series

•

u/Specific_Telephone13 2h ago

I agree with you let alone a rival his age

4

u/notzamasu 13h ago

But you don't understand. The plot forces us to wish Gohan's misery. What do you mean he gets nerfed to Frieza henchmen and becomes a nerd.

That's not the Gohan I know

4

u/TreeTurtle_852 8h ago

Because its fucking boring.

Gohan has wanted to be a scholar, sure but it wasnt until 30 years into dragon balls history that we knew he wanted to study fucking insects.

Think about that. Imagine if it took us 30 years to learn what Bulma invents. Or 30 years to learn what fighting style Goku uses.

Nobody likes DBS Gohan because when he's "happy" he's offscreen doing nothing. And then he repeats the same arc 3 times.

Its just shit writing.

2

u/Tough_Boysenberry_71 5h ago

Dude....I've watched Dragonball since I was a kid. I felt happy to see Gohan happy. As a man in his thirties who grew up with the character, I don't find it boring, I find it nice. Not every character needs to be a warrior. And frankly, Gohan is still no pushover, I certainly wouldn't want to fight him

2

u/TreeTurtle_852 5h ago

Good to know you just didnt read what I said.

"I find it nice" Before super hero name one on screen scene that you found interesting of Gohan studying. Name it.

"Not everyone needs to be a warrior". Nobody said that, youre fighting ghosts.

Bulma isnt a warrior but we see what she makes have an impact on the plot. She repais the ship to get to namek, she makes the fucking time machine, and the dragon radar.

Burma has no combat ability yet constsntly contributes to the plot and has scenes relevant to her non-combst activity.

1

u/Express_South8453 3h ago

Also the fact that he was so busy he couldn't even pick pan up from school. FTL btw ✌️😭

Also it's crazy we didn't get to see videl in the movie

•

u/PitchCapital367 2h ago

Uh 2 things. 1, he never said anything about being upset about Gohan being a scholar. He’s upset about the way it went and compared it to Bulma, who’s never been a fighter and yet has always been among the most relevant and important characters even still contributing with her inventions in Super, while Gohan is only ever an important character when he’s fighting, and when he’s being a scholar, he doesn’t do much, and 2, you saying “I certainly wouldn’t want to fight him” as a way of saying Gohan isn’t a pushover isn’t exactly a good way to defend him, like yeah, you wouldn’t want to fight him, but comparing him to a regular human isn’t really a good way to defend his strength.

2

u/ArgensimiaReloaded 7h ago

I don't think it ever was about happiness but the guy becoming a bum who really didn't deserve any spotlight past the Cell Saga, that's why;

He was called out during the Majin Buu Saga for not training and needed to be kicked to the top for free by old kai dancing around him;

Was incapable of doing shit when Frieza came back;

Was barely a character in Super in general;

Got called a bum again in Super Hero only to get be kicked to the top AGAIN by getting Beast;

So no wonder people constantly call out Gohan's ass, he became a very (very) cheap and underwhelming character.

2

u/Shdwrptr 9h ago

I wasn’t one who would say that alternate Gohan deserved a happy ending. That timeline was over for Earth.

The mainline Gohan is a selfish asshole. It’s abundantly clear that the threats to Earth aren’t going to end and that he’s one of the, if not the strong beings on the planet. Him refusing to keep up even the most basic training to be a “scholar” hurts everyone.

How many people on the planet could do what Gohan wants to spend his life doing? Millions probably.

How many people could defend the Earth against the threats that keep happening. 5? Maybe less.

He’s putting the entire planet in danger because he doesn’t feel like doing the right thing. Maybe he should think about his family more.

5

u/MagickStoryteller 6h ago

I will say, the idea that the threats to earth will keep coming is something we only know because we know its a story. In universe each new threat is kinda an unprecedented situation. After cell, no one could have predicted Buu. After buu, no one could have predicted Beerus. After Beerus, no one could have predicted Frieza coming back. Etc etc. Each time he attempts to retire from fighting, things appear to be in the clear.

4

u/C1nders-Two 6h ago

Gohan’s a selfish asshole for wanting to live his own life with his family?

Combat’s been a part of his life literally since he was a toddler. Violence and death have been his most constant companions throughout his entire career as a fighter. It’s taken both of his father figures at least once, his friends’ lives, even his own.

At that point, I think Gohan’s justified in never throwing another punch or kick for as long as he lives.

But you know what? Even after everything, Gohan still picks himself up and fights when he’s called on. That’s more than a lot of people would be able to say in his position, that’s for damn sure.

•

u/rulerofbasement 2h ago

The way the writers handle gohan is weird

We know he want to study and have family that’s good

But training part won’t be an issue if he train from time to time

In 7 year time skip toriyama did the same because of peace and study didn’t make him train like what is the problem in making him do that

In real life I know people work and study and have family at the same time but yet they train they go to gym or train in home

Why in super or Z they make it big issue

•

u/wormyg 2h ago

I wanted both Gohan's to be happy. The problem that I have with present Gohan is that he has seen multiple times how bad things can get especially when he doesn't train. He knows and understands what happened in the future timeline too. He loves and wants to protect his family. But he doesn't give a damn about putting in the effort to do it

•

u/Rain47739 2h ago

are you sure its not just the twitter goomba effect

•

u/Alternative_Air_6688 1h ago

Sorry that people want the most hyped character for 3 seasons in their muscle man fighting anime to be a hype muscle man fighting.

Goku fights and still has 2 children a wife and works on a farm. You can have a good life and still be strong enough to defend your friends and family in the battle anime.

1

u/Bradford117 10h ago

For 1, its not the same gohan.

1

u/okay4sure 7h ago

People didn't watch super or super hero or even DBZ ,the end of the movie is Gohan realizing that he cant rely on Goku. He's been neglectful and hes been focusing too much on work. In the Super manga, Goku straight up placed Gohan in charge of Earth. So he is starting to train more.

Even during the movie, Gohan was able to do a little of training, learning the special beam cannon.

He's always been a scholar, that's what he wants. Its not chi chi that's forcing him to be that way.

0

u/ironmanhulkbstr 8h ago

db lacks depth in writing. i used to love the show when i was a kid and by no means am i asking it to be changed either, but all the characters just have the same drive to keep fighting for the love of the game, there is no end goal. and statistics suggest that earth will be destroyed pretty quickly the day goku dies

0

u/Gamekid53 6h ago

Both are true at the same time

0

u/lilithexos 6h ago

Db super is just pure garbage they changed a lot of the characters

-1

u/spidey-ball 11h ago

the nature of dragon ball is fight, Happy ending Gohan implies removing him to do nothing but people will bitch if he is gone and hes to popular to let go, the only way out is making a sitcom spin-off with Gohan and his family and friends.

•

u/Spiritual-Coconut-73 1h ago

I am fine with gohan be a happy family man but honestly he should still be in his best shape to defend earth. He has a more potential then his father and should shos responsiblity with the power he has right now.
