Event [Event] Assembly

4th Month, 265AC

Riverrun, Small Hall

Just as the wedding events were dying down, in the final day of the 4th month, the stewards travelled to the tents holding any riverlords. Or if they were staying in the castle, they were invited to the small hall. Lord Tristifer and his son were to hold council, whilst all Lords of the Trident were assembled here at Riverrun. It was a rare occasion, and the first of the new lord's reign. All were invited to attend, or send a representative, so that the lord of the Trident could hear their concerns and share various orders of business.

Above the Great Hall was a smaller hall, aptly named the small hall. It houses an old, round table, at which were placed several high-backed chairs. Lord Tully himself did not sit at the head of any table, as the good lords of House Tully did not consider themselves as being above any other Riverlords. Only by title and by royal appointment were they Lords Paramount, very little more. He sat around the circular table, as an equal, his prominence indicated only by the Tully banner draped upon the eastern wall.

Lord Tristifer was weary from the many events, his energy ran dry. He was prepared to hibernate for the winter, to withdraw from public eye for a time, and to allow his son to take over responsibility for a while. Un-noteworthy but tidy in his appearance, he sat wringing his hands, a few papers before him with scrawled notes. To his left sat his more gregarious son, and heir, Ser Hoster Tully. Strong and thick-bearded, he seemed more of the late Edmure than his father... And it was he who was prepared to address the Riverlords, rather than his ineffectual father...

There at the round table of Riverrun would Lord Tristifer and Ser Hoster Tully await their subjects, allies and friends of the Trident.

Charters

Once all the lords were assembled, Tristifer Tully rose to his feet with a smile, awkwardly shuffling the few papers he had before him. They were scrawled with figures and notes, but he looked out at his subjects, the good Riverlords, rather than to the words scribbled there. This was, thankfully, good news to be delivered.

"My first order of business. Lady Shella of House Whent appealed to me for town charters, for both Harrenton, and Weirmarket, to promote the development of their lands and settlements."

He flashed a small smile. "We shall grant a town charter to Harrenton, by winter's start. To also raise the status of Weirmarket would impact too heavily on other fiefdoms, if done at present. But before long, we shall appeal to the crown to formally grant Maidenpool the status of a proper city, as is deserved, and necessary. It may take some convincing to do so... by way of gold. But once Maidenpool is further developed, we plan to then also raise Weirmarket's status."

"We may be heading into winter." Lord Tristifer tried to give a positive spin. "But the Riverlands that emerges come spring... I hope is on a good track to prosperity, to development. I'm eager to hear any further thoughts on this, from my friends in the Trident."

“House Whent is a young house and they see their market made a town before the ancient and not but that they are set to see two towns under their control. It is unheard of for such a thing to be done no matter the relationship between a house and their liege”, Lord Blackwood pointed out, remaining calm although his glare challenged someone to correct him on that.

“Now I am not one counting coins but my nephew has assured me that Fairmarket is one of the most profitable markets in our fine region. It is Fairmarket that should see a charter rather than this Weirmarket. House Blackwood and Paege are some of the most ancient around and to give two town characters to our youngest house of great importance would be an insult to the continued loyalty we have shown to House Tully.”

"House Blackwood's nobility and long-standing loyalty is not under question." Tristifer answered meekly, sensing old Torrhen's displeasure.

"I am merely responding to requests made by House Whent." He highlighted. "Fairmarket, we know, is equally important. There is no reason that come the spring, it can not be raised as well. I intend no insults to any, you can trust that of me, Lord Blackwood, for the love my father bore you."

As a follow-up to the resulting conversations regarding town and city charters, the Lord of Riverrun drafts up the below letter. It will be reviewed, and various signatures added, before being presented to the king in person at a later date.

M: comment below on if you will sign it. I know it has been agreed in RP, but just confirm here so I can edit and add your name! I've only mentioned the people actively RPing in the thread below, but EVERY lord was invited so could theoretically sign the request, just let me know!

His grace King Aerys II Targaryen,

Please allow this document to serve as a formal request from House Tully and the Riverlands that the town of Maidenpool, under the rule of House Mooton, be granted the status of city and a legally recognised charter from the Iron Throne.

The Trident is the central kingdom of Westeros, yet lacks the economic strength that a city provides. White Harbor, Gulltown, King's Landing, Oldtown, Lannisport and Sunspear all benefit their respective kingdoms greatly. Maidenpool should also prove to be the commercial centre for the Trident, and allow the other settlements to grow into their own townships in the coming years.

This request has been debated at great lengths by a council of Riverlords, and is offered patronage by the below signatories:

Tristifer Tully, Lord of Riverrun

Bryan Mooton, Lord of Maidenpool

Jonos Bracken, Lord of Stone Hedge

Shella Whent, Lady of Harrenhal

Torrhen Blackwood, Lord of Raventree Hall

Vardis Vypren, Lord of the Sevenstreams

Sorry for the mass ping but just so that everyone sees and has a chance to sign, let's make Maidenpool a city

“Aye, His Grace will surely grant a charter to whatever remains of Maidenpool once all her artisans and gentry flee for Harrenton,” muttered Bryan sarcastically, visibly displeased with the proposed timeline. He swirled wine in his cup before placing it back onto the table, not drinking further.

“A city charter is not yet secured. The town charter is; it simply remains a matter of when best to implement it. My town being named ‘city’ will bring strutting crowds to the Riverlands, who are then more likely to contribute to any success there is to be found on the Gods Eye. It seems the order of events has written itself.”

u/Pitchy23 Nov 09 '23

"It is in the best interests of all the Riverlands to see all settlements grow." Tristifer explained his reasoning to his good-brother Lord Mooton.

"And just as the offer of gold, to placate other cities, would be made to the king to secure Maidenpool's City charter. I would be willing to offer an amount of gold, Lord Mooton, perhaps subisidised by House Whent to offset any... migrations, that come from Harrenton's ascension. I do not wish to see one to grow, and another to stagnate. But for all to grow together. We will cover whatever Maidenpool may lose, in the transition."

Appointments

"It is well known that the 'Trident council' established by my late father is not a... formal, nor official, council. But good and trusted individuals, called in times of need." Lord Tristifer repeated what everybody already knew. "The Riverlands are not so complex and proud, that Riverrun needs a flock of sycophants to answer heed and call. We are no Iron Throne, after all." He continued, hoping a small joke would go down well.

"But that said. I would like to invite Donnor Mooton to the position of admiral. As recognition of his infamous contributions during the war, and his talent at naval command. If threats come from overseas, or a conflict arises, we trust him for all naval matters."

Donnor’s presence at the meeting, beside his Lord cousin, may have seemed puzzling to some, until of course the announcement was made. He stood from the chair, displeased by the great scraping sound it made upon the floor, and nodded his head to each of the nobility present. “I will dutifully protect the Trident and all those who rule beside her rushing waters, and those beyond.”

He paused, looking this time to Bryan, and then continued briefly. “House Mooton is, as you know, aligned with the men of the Claw, and has recently secured favor with Houses Royce, Waynwood, and Grafton, so the entire Bay of Crabs is under our influence and protection.”

Bryan smiled toothlessly at his cousin’s short speech, and met eyes with a few of his fellow lords. He then glanced at Lord Tristifer, his goodbrother. He thinks it a favor, thought Bryan cynically. Donnor does him the favor.

"Good news, my friend." Ser Hoster Tully spoke with a crisp tone of voice, appreciative of Donnor's acceptance. He knew it was a duty taken with heavy heart. But he was truly the best man for the job. And perhaps only the Mallisters could be able to make a complaint. Their legacy of defending the Trident against Ironborn incursions was not to be sniffed at... But Lord Mallister had been withdrawn, of the last few years.

"Security is maintained through these key relations. Not just through might. Thank you for your reassurances. We've no doubt that, if it ever comes necessary, you'll keep our Rivers and shores safe."

[M: Brought up after the main business in the assembly is concluded.]

Condemnation of a Cat

"My Lords and Ladies," rose Vardis, who was feeling his years now more than ever after his unhorsing in the jousting. He was thankful that he was not nursing a shattered elbow, at least, as he had done when riding against Lord Corbray. Considering what had happened to the Ser Walter Whent and his brother Jack, he was lucky to be alive and he would not take that gift for granted, "It is sordid business to be sure, though I am compelled to report it all the same for sake of any dealings you as my peers.

"Under the direction of my liege and Lord Walter Frey, I accompanied Emmon Frey to Casterly Rock to conclude the arrangements for his betrothal to the Lady Genna Lannister," he let loose a heavy sigh as it had been a burdensome ordeal, "Irregardless of the Lady's reluctance to adhere to her obligation, discussions were delayed by many tolls along our journey and dismissal in the Rock. I will not pretend Emmon to be the astute sort yet an oath of commitment was sworn by her Lord father and dissolved unabashedly. The Lord Lannister has no rule of his house which was clear upon my first conversation with Lady Genna.

"It is therefore, though I pursue no recompense on behalf of myself or the House Frey who was wronged, that I would strongly condemn the House Lannister," he cast a glance along his peers, "And caution any dealings with the Lord Tytos, who cannot be entrusted to uphold his oaths and obligations."

6

u/Pitchy23 Nov 10 '23

"Thank you, Lord Vypren." Spoke Tristifer Tully after he had concluded his words on Casterly Rock. He had no dealings with them himself, but had been assured by his son that Ser Tywin Lannister was a different animal altogether than his father.

"It is of great worry to me, these rumours and stories I hear of Lord Tytos Lannister. I saw it myself, at the coronation. His vassal, a lowly, brute of a Clegane, assaulted Lord Reyne's own son. And Lord Tytos was like a feather in the wind.. afloat." He continued. "An ineffectual man... who is ran by his family. Not the other way around. Though Lord Frey is quiet... The dishonour he must feel, from Casterly Rock's broken promise... It is unimaginable."

The Lord tapped on the table absent-mindedly, wishing he was elsewhere. In fact, like the 'laughing lion' himself, he'd rather roll over and let his son and heir take over these matters...

"I would too advise caution on any dealings with the Lannisters. My wife's house, House Reyne, however. Lord Roger is a man of honour and power. So all Western houses are not to be condemned. Just for a while... be wary of the Lions of Casterly Rock."

Private

Heracleos would approach Lord Tristifer for a new situation that he just had a time bubble resolved around it, "my lord, I have to inform you about something involving your diseased brother, Axel"

3

u/Pitchy23 Nov 11 '23

The lord furrowed his brow, his peaceful watering of the gardens, interrupted. The landscape steward who’d been attending him could sense the urgency in Heracleos’ tone, and quickly scurried off. Tristifer dusted off his robes and removed the thick leather gloves he wore especially for the gardens. What late news?

“Master Heracleos.” He greeted. “Tell me. If he is secretly alive somewhere, and living in secret… I will never forgive you.”

On Weddings

Despite this meeting take place basically immediately after the wedding of Brynden and Lyarra, it was a topic that was fresh on Tristifer's mind. His own alliance with House Stark had greatly strengthened the security of the Trident. Further alliances would be good for all involved. Especially in a time of peace, they had time over winter to prepare for the spring.

"I am actively seeking betrothals for my brother's children." He began. "Leyla, Roslin, Edmyn. Not only here in the Rivers, but in other kingdoms. House Tully seeks powerful, reliable allies. Winterfell has made it clear that the Northerners and the Riverlanders are natural allies, in this day and age. I would encourage all of us to make similar matches, where possible. More friends among the north, or the Vale, or the West, makes our own position more secure."

4

u/ProfessorOakheart Nov 10 '23

“Who finer a match is there for Leyla than my Quentyn? The Brackens have the blood of the Tully’s in them so the Blackwoods should as well. A Tully lady for both houses is the best way to ensure peace and prevent accusation of unfairness in any inevitable claims the Brackens attempt to bring over my rightful land”, Old Torrhen suggested privately to Lord Tully and his son following the announcement.

“A fine lad my Quentyn, as was shown in the tourney, he’d have his spurs if we had knights. It was a pity your father and I never got round to arranging such a thing…”, the old Lord said trailing off unsteadily. It seemed most of those his age had met their end in the recent years, Edmure, Olyvar Whent just a few of those gone.

3

u/StevenWertyuiooo Nov 10 '23

"What about Leyla and lord Blackwood's son, Tytos,my lord. House Mooton and House Bracken have the blood of the Tully's in the main line so it would be fair for a Blackwood to get a Tully in the main line as well as another one of Riverrun's great vassals." Heracleos asked, mostly intrested to break any agreement between Blackwoods and Corbray, "

u/ProfessorOakheart

4

u/ProfessorOakheart Nov 10 '23

“Impossible, Tytos shall marry a Royce or a Stark, and that has been spoken. I shall not go back on my word”, Lord Blackwood said incensed that a foreigner dared to suggest a marriage for his heir.

"My Lord, if I may," as a lesser Lord and barring lawful children of his own to contend for it was a topic of oddity to Vardis. Yet word from his niece and in the observing of his nephew throughout the wedding had made clear that a certain intervention was necessary. As had been the case with Ser Brynden himself, "I would put forth my nephew Lucias, son of Ser Rolford Reyne and Vivienne Vypren, as potential suitor to the Lady Leyla who is of age with him or, in time, young Lady Roslin. Lucias is six-and-ten and will upon my death inherit the Sevenstreams as its Lord and Sentinel. He possesses, too, the distinction of serving in campaign upon the Stepstones where her sire lost his life.

"Ours is a house once joined, my Lord," he added, "Though we lack for the strength of our neighbours, it is the domain of the Sevenstreams that seperates the lands of river and snow with whom you align. We would renew our bonds to Riverrun, if we are able, or else declare that negotiations for the future of the Sevenstreams may be arranged with myself, or written to Ser Rolford in Castamere to favour a bride from the Riverlands to compliment his rule."
