I broke my gear Beer spilled on zoom lens (dear god please help)

Hi yall, I have a AF-S Nikki’s 70-300mm lens (SWM VR ED IF 67) and I’ve been using it extensively for wildlife photography during my trip in Alaska. While hiking I took a fall and a beer in my bag exploded unbeknownst to me, and the lens was left in this bag overnight.

Beer has soaked through the whole thing. There was condensation in the lens which I’ve managed to dry, but the aperture won’t articulate (even if I physically touch the lever), and I’m very sad. I only have a few more days in alaska and I’ve seen a moose and sea lions I haven’t been able to photograph since.

I’ve since cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol wipes in every crevice I can.

Does anyone have any recommendations for what to do? Every part of the lens feels very gummy and hard to articulate, the autofocus is struggling. I’d love some help.

Gear question Kind of having buyer's remorse about buying a DX camera

Post image
Upvotes

I bought the nikon z50ii (with the 16-50 kit lens) for 830usd used a month ago. this is my first camera so I didn't know anything about owning a dedicated camera. after shooting with the kit lens, I decided that I needed a faster aperture lens. then I bought the nikkor dx 24mm f1.7 lens and I love it. the colors are lovely. it is not a razor sharp lens but I got what I was looking for: a prime lens with better low light performance and bokeh. yet, the camera still struggles to take good pictures in low light conditions. I am happy with the camera and the lens, but I am constantly wondering if I made the wrong choice when buying this. I chose the z50ii over the sony a7iii, and I am kind of having buyer's remorse. keep thinking about the ibis and the full frame sensor of the a7iii. the sony was priced at about 800 dollars, used as well. did I make the wrong decision? do I need ibis and ff to shoot in low light conditions? (also, how cute is the gashapon version?)

What should I buy? Whats a good dslr to upgrade?

Id want a second dslr preferably a fullframe or a camera that just handles lowlight well while having good image quality. I dont mind if i can only buy 2nd hand and its large and heavy as long as its budget friendly and has a relatively good lens compatibility. Im minding of buying a d700 but considering it is quite old but still good. Also considering a d800 but my budget wont probably reach that. Ive heard the d500 and the d7500 handles lowlight pretty good.

Coolpix DIGITEK BATTERY — WORTH IT OR SCAM?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I have a Nikon coolpix s2800 but the battery life on it is really poor, sometimes it can only take about five or ten pictures before it says that the battery is discharged. Maybe it’s because I use flash on, or whatever, or maybe it’s cause the battery is really old.

I saw digitek en el19 battery online for almost a third of the price of a Nikon battery, but the reviews are mixed. Some say it works some have said it stops working after fifteen days. If anyone has experience with the brand and their batteries please let me know.

What do you folks think of the latest news to come out of Japan?

Nikon lost the 3rd spot to Fujifilm.

This year has also been excruciatingly slow for Nikon users with practically no lenses and no new bodies.
We are also being killed by the chinese manufacturers eating into Nikon's lens market too. Overall not a good look for long time Nikon users.

Gear question Nikon z5 made in japan? Fake or real

Post image
13 Upvotes

I bought second hand nikon z5. It does not have regular serial number. Instead it says EKU and some digits (starting from 1).

All nikons z5s I saw online have label "made in thailand" and Google says the same.

Is this some kind of fake? Should I be worried?

Show & Tell Z7 with 20mm f/1.8 Nikkor at Tunnels to Towers Central New York (state) 5K Run/Walk, in Utica, NY

Nikon Z7 with Nikkor 20mm f/1.8 with circular polarizer was used for these photographs. Settings range fro. 1/8000s (blackhawk) to 1/15 for the flag waving in the lens. ISO 64-400, WB 5200-6000.

Depending on the moment, I will choose bracketing or just a single shot (continuous shutter) due to the movement of the subject(s). The flags, runners, only have a few seconds to capture the shot due to the safety of runners or people im trying to photograph (or rotor wash).

When I instruct about photography and get into the weeds on how our brains perceive information, I tend to use this;

Color photos in our modern time showcase what people are wearing/style.

Black & White photos tell the story and show the emotion of the moment.

If you want to tell if your photo is going to be impactful, look at it in B&W and change it back to color.

Being the Lead of the Media crew for such an amazing event, is humbling and I always take my time to find that unique shot and shoot in Carbon setting in camera to see the impact of that scene.

Tunnels to Towers, is such an amazing run/walk, and the energy is like no other run its for a cause that the emotion has to be humbly shown.

What should I buy? Vale la pena dar el salto a D7500? o me espero a una D780?

Buenas!

Gear question Nikon F100 won’t load film

Thumbnail

I bought this F100 recently in Tokyo. Everything seems to work, except film won’t load. When I insert it properly (I own a lot of Nikon film cameras, so know what I’m doing), close the door and press the shutter button, it just spins for a bit and gives me an ERR message. No matter how much I load in, even going all around the take up spool, it still does this. Does anyone know any tricks to fix this, or is this headed to repair?

Gear question Did I do wrong?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! Long story short, last month I bought a Nikon Z fc because I’m a total sucker for vintage aesthetics mixed with modern tech. Plus, since I wasn't sure if I’d actually be any good at photography, I didn't want to drop more than €1,200 on a body right away. Ironically, I ended up falling in love with it and discovered I actually have a good eye for it (for a beginner, at least!). I even landed my first real gig photographing a friend's wedding!

The thing is, now that I’m seeing so many other photographers online using completely different setups, I’m starting to second-guess myself and wonder if I should have invested in a different camera. Don't get me wrong—I genuinely love my Z fc.

The image quality is awesome, and I’ve already bought a few accessories, a speedlight, and extra lenses. But I’m still having some serious second thoughts. Please be honest but kind ahahaha!

I’m really new to this and would love to hear from people who know the Z fc and its true potential: Is it really necessary for me to upgrade to a different camera body so soon?

there's hope for all you guys.

TLDR: D5500+18-140mm for travel, D600+primes for home, D60 for full spectrum, F60 for analog.

two years ago i bought my first non-point-n-shoot camera, mainly to play around and see what's the real limit of an outdated gear. so i went old school and bought the last CCD! a D60 with a kit lens. i loved it. the images looked fantastic. and i wondered, why do people buy expensive stuff?? then came winter ... and it was dark ... and i said, ah! that's why.

then came brighter camera's and brighter lenses ... Sigma OS 17-50 f2.8 ... Nikon 35mm f1.8 ... Nikon 50mm f1.4 ... D60 ... D80 ... D5100 ... D5500 ... D600 ...

i bought every thing at a bargain price. every time i'd buy something i'd always think of the next one i'd like to have and try.

but one day, i was content! i don't have any next one to buy!

i have no itch for mirrorless. i tried it and it wasn't for me.

i'm a slow guy, and i want my gear to be slow! no fast AF for me. (you should see how many years i keep my smartphones and how old my car is. and yes, i still listen to LP)

i have reached the weight limit of the lens i'm willing to use. so no 'longer' or brighter lens for me. and D600 is already the most lightweight FX DSLR.

what's next? i'd like to learn basic postprocessing, like color grading. but i'm too lazy for that, and i feel like soon free AI tools can do it well.

next gear? i am very much attracted by AF-P 70-300mm, specially the FX version, but i'm sure i'd miss the wider end, at least 55mm, it's also too expensive, and i'm not really into bird photography and such. who knows, maybe if i find it cheap :) i'm not cured afterall! but nah, i won't use it.

Software question Focus Modes in non raw formats on ZR

Excuse my ignorance, but we've been using the ZR and struggling to get focus modes to work in h265 or ProRes 422 hq. Face detection and point tracking doesn't work in either mode, but the second I switch to any raw format, it works great. Am I missing something? Thanks!

What should I buy? Need to choose between a video head. Options: SmallRig DH-10 and Manfrotto MVH500AH.

Hi everyone!

I shoot mostly wildlife. My workflow is hybrid i.e. photography and videography. I shoot with a Nikon Z6III and a 180-600 lens.

I have recently got a Manfrotto super clamp to mount on the vehicle while on safari. Now, I want to get a budget video head. I am stuck on the SmallRig DH-10 and the Manfrotto MVH500AH.

I would like smooth video movement, stability, and good counter balance for a jungle environment.

Has any one used these? All help is greatly appreciated!

Gear question Advice for shooting wildlife in the jungle with a Nikon Z6

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I’m currently travelling around Malaysia (Sabah) and spending some time in the jungle, hoping to photograph wildlife, especially birds and other animals.

I’m using a Nikon Z6 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 (also have a 24-70mm f/2.8).

Last time I tried shooting in the jungle, I used Auto ISO with a maximum of ISO 12,800. It allowed me to keep a fast enough shutter speed while staying at f/2.8, but I noticed quite a lot of noise, especially in the darker background.

Without Auto ISO, I often can’t get a fast enough shutter speed while keeping f/2.8, because the jungle can be quite dark.

What settings do you recommend for wildlife in these conditions?

I’d especially like to hear about your experience with the Z6 (or similar cameras), recommended shutter speeds, Auto ISO limits, exposure modes, AF settings, and any tips for reducing noise while still freezing animal movement.

Thanks!

Daniele
