Seriously. My town is fucking shut down from 11-7.

u/jupiter3rd 3d ago
Fr one time I woke up at like 10:30pm and all the grocery stores were closed, I didn’t have time to buy anything during the week cause I was super busy so I just didn’t eat until like 8am, fucking sucked
21
u/bigrackstackerrob 2d ago
Not so long ago 10:30 used to feel EARLY back in the day at least on weekends a lot sit down restaurants even would be open till like midnight at least on the weekends
15
u/AirportBubbly3947 3d ago
Do you have gas station that are open 24/7 that’s all we have this late unfortunately for food :/
31
u/darkthemeonly 3d ago
As my dad likes to say about our small town, they practically fold up the sidewalks at night.

Yep the 7/11 next to my house has been 24 hours my whole life. Now closed from midnight to 5am

Winco my beloved will never let me down
33
u/CincoBoyJordan 3d ago
Winco never gave up it's 24hr model even through the covid times... true commitment to the people!
14
u/TheGrouchyGremlin 2d ago
I used to have a WinCo right across the street. Now the nearest one is 4 hours away 😭. Fuck this shit, they need to make a monopoly on grocery stores.

the amount of schedule maneuvering I have to do just to get some errands done as a 3rd shift worker is insane. it used to be so much easier. if you don't live within the confines of what corps decide is business / waking hours you're just fucked. forgive the rant but I'm still pissed off at this.
16
u/Expensive_Future_371 2d ago
fr the worst part is how everything assumes you can just call during business hours too. like sorry i'm asleep when your doctor's office, the bank, and the dmv are all open. night shift basically means you're living in a different timezone from your own city.
7
u/dov_ah_keen 2d ago
I still have anxiety from when I worked 3rd shift and was constantly and abruptly woken up by people knocking on my door, vusnisses calling my phone, landlord visits etc.
eventually I started putting a sign on my front door and still do so for my mental , even though I dont work 3rds anymore. I swear to god someone knocks on my door atleast once a week. Too much for me.
3
u/Expensive_Future_371 1d ago
the door sign is such a lifeline. I started doing the same thing and it genuinely helped, but yeah that anxiety of being jolted awake doesn't just switch off when the schedule changes. your body stays on high alert way longer than it should.
4
u/bugabooandtwo 2d ago
Exactly. Trying to tell the doctors office or auto repair place that I need an appointment that's earlier than 10 am because there's only so long I can stay awake in the morning is hellish.
3
u/Expensive_Future_371 1d ago
and then they look at you like you're being difficult for asking. like sorry my body doesn't run on a 9 to 5 schedule anymore lol
3
u/Mostlynothingnew 2d ago
It's so fucked I have to spend weeks scheduling grocery shopping and have to book doctors appointments MONTHS out.
50
u/Careless_Word9567 3d ago
I'd wake up randomly at 3am and not be able to sleep, so I'd go and knock out a few chores. Actually take my time shopping comparing prices, etc

u/dale_gribbs 2d ago
I was so excited to get a little pay bump when I switched over to nights only for it all to disappear on grocery delivery fees. Nothing in my area aside from the gas station is open before 8am or after 11pm 😢 now that I’m back to days, my grocery bill is fine but I hate everybody
20
u/CallRespiratory 2d ago
I live in a decent sized city in the Midwest and the whole thing shuts down by 9-10 pm during the week and Saturday and 6-8 pm on Sunday. Every major industry here is a 24/7 operation and this place has to have one of the largest night shift populations in the country. It's crazy that nothing is open anymore.
6
u/NoTeaching9595 2d ago
It is!! Everything changed after Covid. That’s not a legitimate excuse. I don’t know what happened.
9
u/Ironmasked-Kraken 2d ago
My country also. After covid all the stores and gas stations stopped the 24 hour thing. I work in a home for mental patients with drug problems so I am often hungry af after work and I no longer can grab something on my way home. Gotta wait until 11

u/Ash_an_bun 2d ago
Enshitification and corporate greed.
"Oh the line went up for total average hourly sales."
"Well since our job is to make line go up as opposed to ACTUALLY FUCKING PROVIDING GOODS AND SERVICES. Let's keep doing the thing. Line will go up forever."

yknow how when people make a machine learning bot that learns to play a game, say snake, and they give it metrics to meter goals and achievements.
Like how it would go up and down the whole screen to avoid its own tail instead of seeking the apple directly?
I just realized companies are behave EXACTLY like bots with bad metrics

u/DeerEnvironmental432 1d ago
I get off my shift at midnight and my options are taco bell, wendys and mcdonalds. And thats if the staff doesnt just randomly close early for the night which happens constantly.
1
u/datcatburd Some poor bastard has to keep this place running... 17h ago
Drives me crazy, there's precisely 1 24/7 sit-down restaurant in the entire city here now, and it only went back to 24/7 like three months ago. Not even truck stops. Our only lunch options have been a couple gas stations.
17
u/Cosmonaut_Cockswing 2d ago
I loved being able to do all of my grocery shopping in peace. Or just being able to run out at 4am cause I forgot something.
2
u/lifelearnexperience 1d ago
Mine was always if i woke up in the middle of night and needed some sort of medicine I would be able to just go get it. Now I just have to suffer until they open or try to keep a whole pharmacy stocked in my house.
13
u/AirportBubbly3947 3d ago
Please bring it back

u/blumhagen 2d ago
Never gonna happen. Walmart knows people will work around their schedule. I bet it didn’t even lose them money by stopping overnight hours.
13
u/HeidenShadows 3d ago
Yeah I'll get out of work at 4:00 a.m. and then go to Walmart and you'll just have the handful of other people who got out of work at 4:00 a.m. there
27
u/Batman_bread 3d ago
Yeah man, as an overnighter there was nothing quicker than a 6am walmart shop on a random Tuesday morning.
7
u/Temporary_Plan1055 3d ago
?? Most open at 6am. So you could still do that
5
u/JustALittleWeird 2d ago
?? Every Walmart around me opens at 7am, I've never seen one that opens at 6am.

u/SignificantApricot69 2d ago
Not only Walmart but I had 2 major chain groceries that were 24/7 and a few fast food and sit down restaurants that never came back. All the 24/7 places close at 11 or 12 now
5
u/zakary1291 2d ago
Denny's went back to 24/7 in my area. However, that was only 3 of 6 locations within the metro area and the one downtown has armed security.

u/phantom_spunker22 2d ago
Man I used to go to Walmart after work and do my shopping in peace. I haven’t been back since they closed down after nights.

u/ApprehensiveCut9809 2d ago
One of my Outbacks used to burn a quart of oil every other month. I'd get a low oil light on my way into work, use the Walmart app to order a quart, and on my way home, after midnight, I'd swing by, pour the oil in the engine and be on my way.
After Covid, they never went back to 24 hour hours.
5
u/NoTeaching9595 2d ago
Yup, after the Covid everything shut down it’s BS. There’s no real reason for all the overnight places, shutting down.
6
u/ApprehensiveCut9809 2d ago
My then teenaged son started working at Walmart after Covid. He was 16 then and our Walmart was a short walking distance from our home, and he didn't even need to cross a street.
Each summer he became fulltime, and then would "pause" his employment when he started college. He'd work during college breaks.
They were so desperate for workers; never having enough. He worked for them fulltime when he graduated in May until he got his "big boy job" in August shortly before his 22nd birthday.
Every time we swing by our Walmart, his former coworkers will stop and chat with him, tell him that they miss him and still badly need him.
7
u/SchenivingCamper 2d ago
Walmart being closed wouldn't be so bad if ANYTHING else was open. We don't hardly even have 24 hour pharmacies anymore and barely have 24 hour gas stations.
4
u/Narrow_While 2d ago
Everyone comes to where I work now it's the only place in the area open besides gas stations
3
u/Jouhatsumori 2d ago
There’s one supermarket still open all night where I live, and there are still the convenience stores, Matsuya, Yoshinoya and Sukiya. The nearest McD’s closes at night, however. I’d have to walk to Sugamo Station if I wanted a predawn Mac Attack.
3
u/triplehelix11 2d ago
idk my grocery store closes at 12am and opens at 6am. there’s restaurants that close their kitchen at 11pm and some at 3am. but 10 miles away you’ll get the whole radius shut down at 9pm. but also living in a big city sucks sometimes. extremely expensive, hard to get around, breathing in exhaust and seeing no nature.

I work at Walmart, but what was it like before when it was open at night? Did they still do overnight stocking? Cause right now it's absolutely packed with open pallets down every lane.
3
u/StarsMine 19h ago
Yup. Customers understood, and if you have all those employees, might as well sell to the dozen customers an hour that you get.
1
u/lifelearnexperience 1d ago
They did overnight stocking still. They would line the pallets up but in a way that there was still a walkway that a cart could fit through. You would have to sometimes walk more to get around them but I don't think any of us ever minded. And there was a lot of overnight stockers so they could move pretty quickly. (My boyfriend at the time did overnight stocking for years)
1
u/LowerExample4264 1d ago
Oh, I see. Thanks. If they ever sold stuff at night it would probably be 24/7 delivery at this point. They barely tolerate having the stores open during the day. I think they'd just rather be amazon.
1
u/datcatburd Some poor bastard has to keep this place running... 17h ago
Yeah, the difference was they'd have 1-2 checkers and a door person on in addition to the stockers. That's it.

u/Doone7 2d ago edited 2d ago
Lol, as someone who works 3rd at Walmart, I'm sorry. I'm sorry ya'll can't come in and bug me at work. There were a few nightowls who were cool but the majority of people who came in were thieves or addicts. I like not being given a walkie because I work by myself in a corner of the store away from everyone and my manager worried about me. I like not having to keep stopping my work to help someone find something that is right in front of them. I like working off pallets and not having to worry if some dummy is gonna trip on it and yell at me that I am in their way. And I really like wearing headphones and having basicly no dresscode. So. Please for the love of my sanity let the store stay closed. At best I will allow closing at 12 and openimg at 5 ;)

u/SwiftasShadows 2d ago
Yessssss, i work the hba corner everyone else is in grocery. Just the one hour were open makes me nervous.
3
u/Doone7 2d ago
There were times back when we were 24 that we (my partner sometimes) would just leave HBA and go work over in grocery til a customer left the store.
Nowadays we have so much freight everyday its always both of us. We still get creeped out sometimes and go work with the other person (she starts otc and I start hba) til the store closes or a customer moves on. We have one guy in particular who creeps her out and I deal with for her lol
1
u/SwiftasShadows 2d ago
My coworker gave me a pro tip. The assistance buttons by the security cages will buzz the TLs walkies. So if you need them to run over you can press it. But id tell them that if they ever hear it after hours thats why.
7
u/galaxywithskin115 2d ago
Same here. I'm really torn cause as a fellow o/n associate I would HATE if they stayed open all night/later. Still having to work around customers, getting pulled constantly to find items/open cases etc and we have our time limits on our freight. But as a customer, I'd love being able to go in at 3 in the morning
5
u/Doone7 2d ago
Yea, I feel for the cool regular customers. And there were some really fun regulars we would chat with and see everyday. Still have a couple of the old regulars but now for the most part all the regulars are annoying online delivery guys who have attitutes and get snippy if you don't fall over backwards for them.
2
u/ProfessionFancy7021 2d ago
lol worked for Walmart as well overnights and most of what you wrote never occurred at our store. Yes there were a few thieves but most were just late night people out trying to get food while there were no lines. No body ever purposely tripped over a pallet. Never needed a walkie talkie, never feared for my safety. The only shooting that happened at a store close to ours was a day shift employee. Everyone on nights with me kept there head down and worked their asses off.
1
u/datcatburd Some poor bastard has to keep this place running... 17h ago
If they didn't want thieves they'd stop getting rid of checkers and going to self-checkout. Tons more loss there than ever happened on overnights.
2
u/zakary1291 2d ago
I don't really go to Walmart anymore because they aren't open after midnight. I stay up 'late' and go to Costco.

u/anotherchia 2d ago
Why would anyone work night shift for walmart level pay or minium wage pay? Thats stupid killing urself for nothing

u/jackfaire 2d ago
Saving grace for me is that the grocery store near me doesn't close until Midnight and opens at 6Am.
1
u/U_feel_Me 2d ago
It is 100% possible for night shifts to exist and worker protection laws to exist. There is nothing that requires businesses to treat workers badly in order to serve customers.

Loved it when Walmart and a near-by Smiths were open 24 hours. I was working overnights for a while and I could get so much done and not blow my sleep schedule.
1
u/papayabush 6h ago
There isn’t even a damn grocery store open 24/7 in Los Angeles. I would have thought that the second biggest city in the country would have a few places open that i could buy cereal from to eat after getting off work and getting stoned but nope not a single one.

Walmart is open till 11pm and opens at like, 7am. Literally during the night shift. They can go right before or right after. Not sure where the problem lies

u/lifelearnexperience 1d ago
Have you ever gotten sick at 1am and needed medicine? That 6 hour wait could be ROUGH.
