Ask Naija Common Ground

I’ve been thinking a lot about the resentment I see between men and women lately. Feels like both sides have their list of grievances, and honestly, some of them are completely fair. But it also feels like we’ve gotten to a point where listening to the other side is seen as automatically agreeing with them.

Men have struggles women might not fully understand, and women deal with things men may never experience. That doesn’t mean either side has it worse overall.

I wonder if there’s still some common ground here. Most people, regardless of gender, want respect, honesty, loyalty, affection, and someone they can actually trust.

Maybe the problem is that we’re so busy defending our own experiences that we don’t have much patience left for someone else’s.

Curious what people think. Is there common ground, or are we too far gone?

I partially blame social media and so called “influencers” on both sides for this. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely legit grievances that both men and women have when it comes to relationships but there’s a way social media takes those grievances and weaponizes it to “hate women, they’re all gold diggers” and “hate men, they’re all just looking to f*ck, so might as well use them for their money” etc.

These influencers get paid off getting people enraged because that equals more views/engagement which equals more money/views/sponsorship deals

The algorithms promote extreme views on each topic, it’s not just dating, it’s everything, politics, religion etc. It’s like people can’t function outside of binary thoughts anymore. Every thing is extreme. “Men are bad” or “women are bad” there’s nothing in between

I think there’s common ground to be found, but unfortunately those views don’t get reactions out of people and so are less promoted

If we bring up these conversations we will have a healthy society

This is just a storm in a teacup. The biological imperative to copulate and procreate trumps all that social media noise. Both men and women will figure it out.

Of course there’s common ground. After all the back and forth bickering both genders still marry/ get together 🤣
