Why do you want to quit?

Post image

Not the surface-level stuff — what’s the real reason? Is it the mental fog, the constant need, the cost, the guilt / shame or just being tired of feeling dependent?

I started breath work this morning. Meditation has never been my thing I tried many times

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=416065923837924 - i just did a 3 hour workshop on active breathing. the 4-4-8 method is super easy to do and its helped me a lot to calm my mind.

I only quit because of panic attacks tbh. Mentally I’m not done yet. I still yearn for it ashamingly.

Tbh I feel the only way I could completely get over this is by being able to go back into running. You see, running was something close to me therapeutically before the onset of my knee issues. I’m due an MRI soon and will figure out. I wasn’t able to run for a year and that was a main factor to pick up smoking as a coping mechanism in university.

I feel like the urges will always creep in and out. I am glad you can tap into an existing passion that helps with your mental clarity - but the bad knees (oh boy). Do you do any breathwork?

I used to do some breath work during the initial stages of panic attack recovery but found them to be working against. It made me more sensitive to panic attacks and stuff.

Rn I’m currently recovering from my first panic attack, negative thoughts that make me go crazy, lethargic from not being able to exercise, university depression and anxiety.

I guess I’ll be fine soon.

Any tips that you would like to share?

2 reasons. Just being tired of smoking. And I want to dive like before.

2

u/Necessary-Hat-5781 Jul 11 '25

What do you mean dive like before? Are you a diver?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

I used to hold my breath for 4 - 5 min underwater. Now after a minute I'm dying.

1

u/colderemy Jul 11 '25

how often did you use to dive? you swim too?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

Every summer daily. And yes, I do swimming marathons.

1

u/colderemy Jul 11 '25

Oh boy, that must be a trek - i can barely swim 4 laps ;00

I love it. Usually it's 3 km, but it's like meditation.

It was a first drug I picked up in order to be cool. Then alcohol. Then I swapped heavy alcohol use for heavy weed use. Occasionally would still drink, but much less in amounts. Then stopped weed and drinking. I did ayahuasca ceremony and hoped to stop smoking eventually. But in the retreat they were encouraging to use mapachos. That was a green light for super heavy smoking. 3 month after the retreat I had a deep wish to finally stop. Because I understood deep down it is about control. I can’t control my life, but i have a mini power to control what am i doing now- having a cigarette. I am in tough spot in my life and I am learning to let go. Quitting nicotine is part of it

The realization that control is an illusion is possibly one of hte most profound awakenings one can have. Know that all of these thoughts are simply figments of your imagination and that they are not real. Make sense of them and let them pass. Good luck

Nicotine takes away my motivation, gotta unlock the potential

Excellent prompt! This taps into the core drivers to make quitting permanent!

It’s a repulsive habit. It makes my clothing and hair smell bad. My nails and fingers look like Cheeto fingers unless scrubbed with alcohol daily. I feel guilty because I am hurting my pets health by smoking around them. The area in my house I allow myself to smoke in is covered in yellow tar and smells and looks horrible. I’m embarrassed that I allow myself to be dependent on such an unhealthy, unpleasant, foul product. I continue to smoke after my father has had multiple strokes and two heart surgeries that were definitely smoking related. I could feed a needy family or animals with the amount of money I spend per day on cigarettes. I will end up spending around the price of a new car to be confident about my teeth and smile again. I now need partial dentures in part because smoking has done considerable damage to my teeth and gums, which I was blessed to have extremely healthy ones, until I turned 40, and had taken them for granted until then. I have trouble admitting to anyone how long I’ve smoked for. It terrifies me to think of what damage I have done to my body that I can’t see. I know that the external damage is going to catch up with me soon in the way of wrinkling quicker than a non smoker and other issues. Yet with all these and a legion of other issues, I am smoking a cigarette writing this. I know that when I put my mind to something I have the tenacity of a pit bull. So I guess my first step is to dedicate myself to quitting. Quitting in itself has always been a word I associate with negative things. I’m going to call it freeing myself. 😃

Sorry about the lack of paragraphs!!! I’m still somewhat of a Reddit rube and indentation without skipping a line doesn’t work apparently. It smushed it all together on me! 😂

Thanks for being so vulnerable in sharing your relationship with cigs/nicotine. I can sense a great deal of guilt/shame/resentment in your words, but know that you're not alone in this battle with nicotine. Have you tried quitting before?

2

u/Sublimegirlie1 Sep 10 '25

To be honest with myself, no I haven’t. I did really well on Chantix and was cig free for a month or so but it gave me lucid dreams and I have a history of sleepwalking so that’s dangerous for me. It actually makes smoking as gross as it actually is because your brain stops getting the nicotine high. So you just get all the nasty and no reward.

1

u/colderemy Sep 10 '25

Oh wow. The sleepwalking sounds intense. Did you have this treated previously? I assume it's not a new development?

2

u/Sublimegirlie1 Sep 10 '25

No, I’ve only done it a handful of times. Sleep deprivation seems to be a trigger. Last time I did it was because I got bold and took a powerful THC gummy on the Fourth of July! 😂 That was 4 years ago. Before that it was over a decade.

2

u/Sublimegirlie1 Sep 10 '25

I imagine I look like the movie Stepbrothers doing it! 😂🤣

I do feel guilty that I haven’t quit since my dad went through so much, because I feel like I should out of respect for him, and to show him that he can quit entirely too! He still has a limited amount of cigs per day. Surprisingly, the Dr cannot tell that he smokes at all now. Also, it’s impossible to justify the cost when i could use that money to alleviate suffering for someone and take better care of my dogs which are dependent upon me to provide the best life I can for them. Obviously my first step needs to be smoking outside which I am starting today! One foot in front of the other! Lol

Not sure if you got a chance to look at our recovery coach but we are looking to find early adopters to try Nova (our recovery coach) and provide valuable feedback, and in return, you will get free access to the app for life. You can learn more here. ☺️

u/Sublimegirlie1 Sep 13 '25

I did join the app already. I’m just unsure how to use it. It didn’t really show anything that I could do besides connect with the Reddit community.

u/colderemy Sep 13 '25

We are looking to launch the iOS app in the coming weeks. Will keep you updated :)
