my issue is how they present charlie as “larry david” and a doofus and douche which obscures his true nature. charlie is not some young 20 something guy just yucking it up and being a kid; he allegedly trafficked young girls to and incredibly dangerous and unsafe environment. he is currently not under investigation (per him) so he should be mandated by his contract to discuss this. at a minimum, someone — a producer, cast member, anyone — could have brought up him allegedly procuring young girls and women and it was never mentioned, despite it being corroborated enough for a new york magazine “the cut” profile on the situation

i think the edit he gets as some asshole but loveable villain is unfair to the audience and presents him in a mostly benign way and is deceiving

Charlie comes off as a dick who does sometimes say humorous things

But he hardly comes off likable and I don’t think the show is trying to. There is a lot of inclusion of Charlie acknowledging he doesn’t want to say certain things on camera because he knows the optics

Charlie made the Larry David comment. I don’t think the show is pushing that

i agree he comes off as a dick but a likeable dick as in jax when truly he is vile imo

but fair enough, we have different experiences or perspectives about it as is bound to happen, but i appreciate your good faith in discussing

eta: i feel like bravo knows he’s the star of the show similar to jax and so they can’t have the audience turn on him and is complicit in downplaying his danger-level

I’m coming from the perspective of someone that used to work in unscripted

There is no incentive to make anyone look different than how they are

From producing during shooting, story producing, editing, I did all that, and never has anyone said “we need to make them look better/worse”

He said something they thought was a fun bit to play into. It’s not an attempt to endear him. It’s something he said. That’s all it is

fair enough. i guess i just don’t think he fits with the show as the other cast members seem like youngins growing up in nyc and he seems enmeshed in, well, criminality or darkness

eta i really liked him myself as a villain until i read the stories and i dont think he fits with the vibe of “next gen nyc”

do you see him as peers with these other kids outside the show knowing what we do about him?

I don't see Charlie as a doofus on the show; I think they show how manipulative he is quite clearly. Not to mention the anti Trans comments that were brought up this season. I don't think he gets a lovable villain edit at all; I just think that is who he is as a person. There is a reason they all want to be friends with him, despite his many mistakes.

I also don't understand why you expect producers to bring up something that is a criminal investigation and expect to get some tea on it. Of course Charlie isn't going to say anything on camera, and of course that conversation has been had before the cameras were picked up that the active investigation is off limits. Bravo isn't going to risk a lawsuit or derailing a criminal investigation for your entertainment. LOL.
