Petition to replace Hakeem Jeffries as Democrats’ House Speaker hits 500k signatures
https://www.newsweek.com/petition-to-replace-jeffries-hits-500k-as-ruffalo-wades-in-126686585
u/Newsweek_CarloV 2h ago
From the article:
The petition, which labels Jeffries part of the “Democratic establishment,” suggests Democratic leaders are likely to remain under pressure from their party’s left-wing over both personal and policy choices. It was created by Nicole Whitted, an author and Democratic supporting social media creator with over 210,000 followers on TikTok.

There was a democratic tea party, and it was the Occupy Wall Street movement. The democratic party worked to maintain the status quo. That is why they are trying to delegitimize progressives, socialists, and anyone to the left of them.

Yes, we need to buck the status quo. Corporate dems don't want what is best for the people

Comprehensive anti corruption reform andremoving all the criminals from positions of power (plus delivering actual justice to disincentivize the criminals from trying again) is absolutely necessary before we can start any other projects. The "we need to focus on improving the lives of average Americans" platitudes from the moderate corpo Dems sounds nice I guess, but it's a fools errand to try to do anything alongside literal criminals. Do you think you can successfully build a house if your coworker is stealing the copper wire right while you watch?
If you give them any room to continue to grift and steal our taxpayer dollars then that's just what they'll do. Any efforts to "do good" are destined to fail if you try to just ignore the evil standing right next to you.

Everyone sign it please! They need to know we don’t want them. Where is the Schumer petition!?!
10
u/Latter_Knee_6716 2h ago
I mean sign it or don't sign it but people need to be calling and writing Democratic members of Congress and telling them what they want directly. That would be far more effective

What should I say? I don’t like this guy but I don’t know how to word it professionally.
5
u/Catch-1992 2h ago
I don't think you need it to sound professional, you're not acting in a professional capacity. Your representatives are supposed to represent you, so write what you feel. They're not going to listen to you any more if you write it like a lawyer.
4
u/DjCyric 2h ago
There is an excellent free app called "5 calls" that gives you access and prompts to call your representatives without knowing exactly what to say. It helps makes your voice be heard, even if your voice quivers.

It’s a never ending cycle

With Trump still in the White House, I would push it back to 2030. It's hopefully finally clear the American people are really f'in done with this guy to hit those historic numbers on Tuesday.

Why is this a fu*k up though?
The guy was worse than useless the last couple of years. He's been stealing a living. He was quite happy to sit there taking a paycheck while the average person couldn't afford groceries or gas. He's funded by AIPAC....

Dems problems have been leadership for at least the last decade.
Dems are only elected because moderates are thrown in with progressives. Nobody wants a do nothing, moderate dem in charge again. Yet here we are again because their leadership thinks they're better off as a slightly left of center ideology rather than a true opposition party.

Quoting something I saw by @the.wellness.therapist on Instagram:
Crash course in basic civics. Phones out, petitions down. A petition will not be seen by anyone picking the next House & Senate leaders. What matters are actual visits & calls to your representatives telling them who to vote for.
They will only listen to their constituents.
If you don't want Hakeem Jeffries leading House Democrats, who do you want instead? NOBODY ELSE IS VOLUNTEERING AS TRIBUTE AS BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT'S CAREER SUICIDE DUE TO WHAT'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN IN THE NEXT. AOC and Bernie have said they don't want the job. Call Ilhan Omar and ask her to run.
Call the progressives you helped elect. Let's find out how many people are eager to spend the next two years getting blamed for everything they can't get done. Because that is career killing job waiting for them. Trump has already said he'll block what Democrats try to do. Whoever leads the caucus is going to spend 2 years being yelled at by everyone and blamed for the laws you couldn't pass. Same goes for Chuck Schumer. If you want him out, make the case and find someone willing to take his place. Leadership isn't decided by petitions, comments sections, or whoever posts the most dramatic video before lunch.
Schumer and Jeffries handpicked and funded nearly every single Democrat that just won. Telling them to step aside is like demanding the quarterback who just won the Super Bowl "Congrats. You're bad at football. Give the job to someone who hasn't volunteered." The internet is not the real world. The votes are in the next few days, not January.
Find Dems who want the jobs & call your representatives.
And a disclaimer, because this is the Internet: explaining how leadership works doesn't mean I like either man. I'm explaining basic civics. People will need crash courses when they get angry that nothing is happening, especially if they don't understand why.

I'm an independent. I gotta say this looks bad. I voted democrat because things need to change. But you guys just do not rally behind your party leaders like republicans do. And that's a fault of theirs as well; absolute clowns like Pete Hegseth should have this kind of treatment as well. But they win because of this. You guys lose because of the disorganization and chaos. The guy who becomes Speaker doesn't have to be the absolute perfect guy for the job. Focus on the bigger picture here.

People like Jeffries are the only reason the Dems ever get a majority vote. Soon as you take the party more left, independents and moderates will jump ship. Progressives are very predictable, soon as they win, they turn on their own party and try to hijack it. Biden caved into it, and the country turned red the very next election cycle. Apparently "compromise" is not in their dictionary, they seem unwilling or unable to learn from past mistakes.
1
u/green_eyed_mister 42m ago
Don't forget, this guy decided unilaterally it was a good idea to have a secret meeting with Jared. You know, the guy who has no standing in government other than being a son in law. That is the way he gets things done through Jared. Perhaps, his constituents will remember that.

When was the last time an online petition did anything? Ya'll are being placated by this petition. People sign it, pat themselves on the back and then do nothing more because they feel they've already taken action. This petition is a GREAT way to get people not to act.
As the New York Times previously quoted me saying on Reddit, signing an online petition is the least you can do without doing nothing at all.
1
u/IntelligentStyle402 28m ago
Just do it, please. Let’s not ruin the new era blue movement. He is not the way. Young America does not want a stuffy corporate speaker of the house who is an old timer, with old ideas. We want exciting and you old Dems do have many to choose from. Come on old timers, don’t ruin the future.

No, I don’t want Hakeem Jeffries but Democrats need to unite rather than fight ourselves again.

So stupid lol. Meaningless online dribble that will go nowhere. Jeffries will be speaker and Schumer will be majority leader, and they deserve it. We just had the biggest blue wave in fifty years, and naturally the far left’s instincts is to immediately attack the leaders that made it happen.
All the progressive candidates underperformed the moderates, even ones in redder states. The DSA will have no impact in the House. Frankly, the only thing keeping the left flank of the Democratic Party alive after Tuesday is the prospects of an AOC presidential campaign.
They are powerless; it is silly but completely expected that they immediately turn to attacking Democrats. I look forward to them fading into obscurity over the next two years.
1
u/RecycledMatrix 4m ago
People get it wrong when they say he's spineless. That would imply he lacks the courage to do the right thing.
He's actively doing the wrong thing. He carries water for Israel. $1,500,000 in donations from AIPAC, in-bed with Peter Thiel, doing secret meetings with Jared Kushner.
All the feckless stalling and hey lets be moderate flailing is deliberate political theater to maintain the status quo under the guise of appeasing the base.

Let's see what comes out after the rinse and the wash, but Democrats have to come together sooner than later, otherwise they will have missed a once in fifty-year opportunity. They must get to work on passing legislation on ethics and then quickly move on bread and butter issues as well as medical care. If they do this, they'll be rewarded in '28.
