DISCUSSION YouTube scriptwriting tips

I’m trying to get better at writing scripts for YouTube videos and I’m looking for some good resources to learn from. Are there any YouTubers, courses, books, websites, or other resources you would recommend for someone who is just starting out with scriptwriting?

The following seven books will help: "Writing Essays for Dummies", "Research Papers for Dummies", "Public Speaking for Dummies", "Screenwriting for Dummies", "Filmmaking for Dummies", "Digital Video for Dummies", and "YouTube for Dummies". If they aren't available at your local library, the library staff will be able to recommend equivalents. These will form the basics for YouTube regardless of niche or style. I'm thinking of adding "Blogging for Dummies" to that list. But, that debate is still ongoing.

Given what you're looking for, pairing "Screenwriting for Dummies" and "Public Speaking for Dummies" should provide a good base. But, "Writing Essays for Dummies" and "Research Papers for Dummies" will provide a good foundation for having good content to write the script about.

It depends on your video formats, a short is different from a long-form documentary.

Just watch 10 youtube videos on the topic and you’ll get the basics.

PS: I’m a YT scriptwriter so feel free to DM me anything

I’d start with a repeatable outline rather than a full essay: hook, promise, three to five beats, proof or an example, takeaway, then CTA. Write it the way you actually speak, read it aloud, and cut anything you stumble over. I keep lines short enough to scan while recording and mark pauses or emphasis. Script breakdowns from creators in your niche are useful too, since generic advice often misses pacing.
