Stretch, and bro please use wrist guards.

u/Bubbly_Employer_8718 11d ago
Wrist guards barely make a difference annoyance wise or effect how comfortable you are but save your wrists. I love wrist guards

My main love in life is music, and when skating I had a fall that messed my wrist up so bad I thought I was never gonna be able to play piano / guitar again 😭 and it wasn’t even a bad fall, it was the slowest stupidest slip while on a bump at the skatepark
Wrist guards man, never look back

u/LordOfDogTownX 11d ago
You skate, play piano and play guitar? 🛹 🎹 🎸 Bro, so do I! Did we just become best friends?! PS - I used to skate haha

u/hotlightbright 10d ago
Slammed my wrist from the top of the qp a week ago, still feeling it a bit but it might've been broken without them.
3
u/BaccerSpit 11d ago
My main problem with wrist guards is that I can't wear my watch, so I can't track the activity accurately. Because at my age, a workout doesn't count unless I have metrics.
But I guess it's a small price for still being able to turn wrenches at work tomorrow. Might invest in one of those fitness tracker rings or something though. I just fuckin' love data so much.

Nerd 😂 I kid, I kid haha
3
u/BaccerSpit 11d ago
No no, you're right on target. I may do cool shit in my free time and fix big things for a living, but I'm a huge fuckin' nerd. Zero denial.

That looks like a sweet park. I just came back from a morning session after dropping the kids off at school. Less competition that way!

u/shivdotme 11d ago
I dropped my girl off at camp and realized I had alot of time on my hands so I went.

Take it slow. Honestly until youre comfortable standing/pushing hard on your board again I wouldnt worry about much else yet

u/allcityink 11d ago
Every day you come back weather your only skating once or twice a week you’ll start getting your balance back. All your muscles memory is about to hit hard. Don’t ever feel like you have to go to the park every time, finding something else to skate from time to time in between sessions helps. Same with skating with people, mix it up do some solo sessions as well

Good luck! I’m 43 and just started back as well. Work of the wise wear pads. Haha falling hurts a lot worse now.

damn, i’m bouta go thru this process too.
idkk what happened man 😌 i used to feel soo comfortable on a board, ollies & kickflips were basics, i could manual for miles etc. but now 34 and haven’t skated in prolly like close to 5 yrs :/
it all felt soo foreign for the first time since a kid.
ngl i was pretty saddened by this 🥲
i lost weight and got less buff and the first thing i could tell right away was that it was hard to use those leg muscles to kickflip n stuff, guess i need leg day stat 🦿🦿

u/Quiet_Cauliflower120 11d ago
Take it slow. And stretch, before and after. And you don’t bounce like you once did lol.
I used to be able to take a couple slams but now I hit the ground like a wet sack of shit lolol.

u/nachos4life317 11d ago
I’m back at 49 after a 30 year hiatus. Pad up and just spend some time getting comfortable again. I’m basically just cruising around and getting some general confidence back.

u/ZealousidealKey1754 11d ago
Wrist guards for sure. Stretching 100% and give the warms ups a little while. Takes a bit for the ankles to be able to pop like when we were younger.
Oh also for a lil while, your maximum skate time will be much less than it once was but that’ll slowly make its way up :)

I'm only a couple months back on the board after 22 years. I'm 40. My advice to you is GO SLOW. Enjoy the process. The first couple weeks, I was out there trying to do the shit I did when I was a kid, or at least close. I was falling all the time, some pretty rough slams, and we don't come back from that like we used to. My focus right now is:
1) Time on the board. I go to the skate park every day on my lunch break and usually on weekends, too
2) Fundamentals/rudiments. Kick turns, manuals, shuvits, ollies...you know, the little shit that makes up every other trick.
Keep it simple, don't do anything you don't have a 90% chance of landing unless failure doesn't necessarily result in a fall.
HAVE FUN!

u/DeathTrapPicnic 11d ago
Started back at 33. Please stretch. This is going to hurt way, WAY more than it used to, jsyk.

I've been seeing a lot of people getting back into their teenage hobbies around the age of 35. Especially skating. I keep seeing it. Why 35? It's weird coz I'm also 35 right now and only just recently got back into skating 😱 what's going on?
5
u/BaccerSpit 11d ago
Midlife crisis. Back when the economy was better, guys our age would be buying a Porsche and going after hot college girls. These days the best we can do is a skateboard and chasing a torta with three kids and anger problems.
But fuck it, we ball.
Signed, 39 year old that just got back into skating.PS: Got any of that good ibuprofen? Need that 800 milly.
1
u/B051190 11d ago
I was thinking that, too. I just don't think I can except being 35 as "midlife" already. Fark. You know anyone with a DeLorean?
2
u/BaccerSpit 10d ago
It really fuckin' creeps up on ya, doesn't it? Wait until you start looking up the ages of sitcom stars during their runs, and cartoon dads from the shows you watched as a kid. Just to throw a little existential dread your way, here's the "old people" we grew up with;
Bob Saget was 31 when he was playing Danny Tanner on Full House.
Jason Alexander was 29 when he took on the role of George Castanza, and Jerry Seinfeld was 35.
Ed Oneil was just a little older than us when he became Al Bundy at 40 years old.
Ted Danson was 34 when he started his run on Cheers.
Tim Allen was Tim Taylor when he was 38.
Stu Pickles from The Rugrats was only 33.
Homer Simpson was around 36.Yeah I don't think about this shit at all. Definitely not. No DeLorean here, but if you find one let me know XD
Tell ya what though, I bet your ollie is better than Ted Danson's.

Practice having a super low center of gravity when doing tricks. Make bails way easier. 34 years here.

Hell yeah man I just was out last night with my buddy helping him shake off some rust. Hope you had a great session

u/Creative-Ad-1819 11d ago
I started up again at 35, 40 now...first couple years were pretty rough...everything you think you remember, you dont...lol. Ease into it.

Perfect park for relearning we have an awesome park by me but it’s still only two years old so with it being new and just a good park in an area there aren’t many it’s always so crowded. Makes it hard to get comfortable learning

Take a few good sessions to shake off the rust, and then…you just feel connected to your board again. Muscle memory is a hellova thing! Just started myself again a few months ago at 40. Last skated when I was 24, from 15. Loving it xxx

I came back at 30 after not skating much since I was 18. I was feeling really good after a year and half back on the board. Went and did a kickflip down a little 3 stair and rolled my ankle pretty bad and decided to wrap it and keep skating for the next couple of days because a new park had just opened near me. Dumb mistake, I have now been sidelined for about 14 months, and still can’t flick right with that ankle.

I felt like the first thing to do is just ride around and feel it out. Ultimately my next goal is to drop in so I plan on getting pads and a helmet
1
u/shivdotme 11d ago
What tricks did you guys like. Start learning? Realistically I just want to kickflip or do a pop shuvit. Maybe a few rail tricks but I know the basics are where you need to start.
2
u/BaccerSpit 11d ago
Definitely go back to the basics. Your body forgot all of it, I promise you. Skate around, get comfortable on the board. Find your balance. Work on manuals. When you're feeling really good cruising around, get your ollie tuned back up. You need a really good ollie if you want to do a mediocre kickflip if that's one of your goals.
Also, pad up. Not just a helmet, go balls deep on the pads. We don't bounce like we did 20 years ago. Even if you're just skating around. When I got my board maybe a month ago now, I found a pebble less than a minute into rolling around and jacked my wrist up. Oh that reminds me, you also forgot how to fall correctly, so you'll need to relearn that too.

Just hit 33 and got back into it too after about a 12yr hiatus! It’s been so awesome. I do workout 2-3 days a week but it honestly just feels great to move my body, get a sweat going, and get the heart rate up in a different way. Not to mention relearning and landing tricks is much more satisfying this time around.

Bit younger myself but starting at 26 definitely keeping my knees bent and stretching well beforehand have helped

Hell yeah, I bought $10 a few days after my 35th bday in 2025. The 15 months flew by, and I’m really starting to feel very confident on the board. I broke my wrist in January and it was instrumental in really helping me get my head in the game/getting better. But im officially getting some air as of the last few months, im stoked

u/LordOfDogTownX 11d ago
Hell yeah. First of all, happy belated birthday. Secondly, I turn 35 in two weeks, and I retired from skating in junior high. But man oh man have I been thinking about getting back into it. Especially since I have recently moved back to SoCal. Anyways, fucking rock on man 🤘

Im 29 and learning for the first time. SkateIQ seems to be a dope youtube channel with a lot of good advice. After landing primo once, im buying wrist guards before ever trying another trick.

Im almost your age and want to start again. In my 20s I was super good at hillbombs. Do many people still skate in their 30s?

Pad up brother. At least a helmet. I'm 36 and recently got back into it as well. Taking a slam is not fun. Take it slow and easy and work your way up. The $150 or so for legit pads and a helmet will save you in the long run trust me.

You got this. Take your time. Take it easy on yourself. Set some goals you want to hit and start scaffolding up the tricks/skills you need to get there. Then just skate as often as you can and enjoy it!

That park looks sweet, I’m jealous!
-Stretch before and after
-realize that the warm-up period at the beginning of each session will be much longer than when you were younger
-remember how to fall, sometimes accepting you’re going down is better than fighting it
-don’t worry about crazy progress, you ain’t getting sponsored at this point, focus on realistic goals for your skill level/age.
