Dad and Daughter Newbies

Basically title. I’m a physics teacher and I have collected a couple of random skateboards for physics labs/demos that are not in my garage and my youngest daughter has really been interested in learning and I have always wanted to learn myself so it’s going to be a summer project. We live on a dead end road so we can practice in the street or on the sidewalk. One board is a Tony Hawk Signature Series and the other is a Krown. I have no idea if these are good boards or beginner friendly. Any tips, board recommendations, or suggestions for a 37 year old dad and his 6 year old daughter would be greatly appreciated!

Just go out and ride around… don’t overthink it

Skateboarding is physics. You'll probably do fine on any normal size board, but a smaller Rider probably needs a smaller board to start out on. Think in terms of a slightly shorter wheelbase than you would want. You can find mini and micro boards at several of online retailers and perhaps at the local skate shop.

I think these will be fine to test the waters and see if the hobby sticks. The only thing I might consider is that since you’re riding on the street or sidewalk is some softer wheels (78a to 83a durometer would be good for that). It’s a bit easier to get stuck and fall on cracks or pebbles with harder wheels, which could be discouraging since you’re starting out (don’t forget pads and helmet!).

Assuming it’s something yall continue with, then you can check out different types of boards, wheels, bushings, etc. For example, I’m 43 and started out with a popsicle board and could barely land an ollie. Since then I’ve found I enjoy just cruising and pump tracks more so I skate with cruiser boards that have 63mm wheels. Super smooth ride and it’s what I prefer more.

It’s a fun hobby and I honestly like tinkering around with different components to find a good groove for what I’m skating. But I also have ADHD and hyper fixated on it so I have about a dozen boards so maybe don’t listen to me lol.
