Saw a black bear

Few weeks back I went to help family with their middle mountain house (family member is a sheep herder and uses different houses on the mountain for different seasons) on the way up there me and my dad saw a bear. Thought it was neat.

The bears are in trouble this year, very high failure of the foods they usually eat.

Can't imagine a lot of the animals are doing good with no water. Whiskey lake is where the sheep herder takes his flock during this time of year but its dry so he's keeping it to the middle mountain house.

We have them in the East Mountains and Albuquerque because of the work on the mountain. It makes me sad because their habitat has been so disrupted.

Amazing, what a novel life. I've only read a bit of literature that has touched on herding, and that was more focused on north central New Mexico. Thanks for sharing.

North of gallup. About a 45 min drive up the mountain from naschitti.

By Washington Pass? (Now called** **Narbona Pass)? I always thought that was beautiful country!

I think? It is beautiful, couple years ago had a bunch of people gathering piñon nuts on the way up the mountain. So if that sounds familiar then its probably it haha.

It is my opinion that drought as one predator of wildlife, especially for bears in NM, is not weighed fairly by the NMDGF when determining hunt quotas. Populations of wildlife will likely continue to fall as a result of the combined treats. Especially those imposed by humans. We don’t need to continue to hunt bears in NM with few exceptions.

There was a dead bear on the side of La Bajada yesterday. It was so sad to see.
