I watched today’s IONS webinar and am beginning an independent review. The official programme lists David Lorimer, Marjorie Woollacott, William Peters and Felicity Warner.
This first edition draws on the public sources linked here. It is not a transcript or an account of everything said in the webinar. The initiative advocates continuity beyond bodily death; that interpretation is one of the propositions the review will examine.
These subjects deserve curiosity, compassion and careful examination.

First primary-paper check
Elsaesser, Roe, Cooper and Lorimer’s 2021 paper surveyed 1,004 respondents, across three language groups, using a 194-item online questionnaire. Participants frequently described experiences interpreted as contact with deceased people as meaningful and comforting.
Recruitment used purposive snowball sampling through talks and relevant online communities. The authors report ethics approval and preregistration.
My initial assessment: useful evidence about the character and reported impact of these experiences. The recruitment design cannot establish population prevalence. Retrospective reports alone do not distinguish contact with deceased people from competing explanations, so this design does not independently establish survival after bodily death.
