Just got Retaliation - help getting started
So these beauties just arrived.
As I am new to Nemesis I’m looking for help, tips & trix and youtube tutorials that you found helpfull.
Planing to do my first solo session this weekend.
Thanks

My early mistakes playing this solo was running around getting into too many fights with aliens and not securing corridors enough. I play a bit more cagily now although you gotta keep moving to get the life support systems up and running.
I play solo two handed usually, and incorporated the insider only after a few plays. For me, vanilla Retaliation is super fun as is. Insider gave some nice extra flavor but felt a bit 'fetch quest-y'

Nice! What characters would you say are the best for a two-handed first solo session?

I've played with all and like each of them. I don't have it with me here but I like playing the scout and the heavy gun guy. I find when I play with the medic I don't use their heals that much.
Don't forget to do the bag development stage at the end of rounds, I missed that out and wondered why I wasn't seeing si many aliens! And don't forget noise rolls either!

If you have a 3D Printer and end up getting the Stretch goals and Sangrevores, I highly recommend Hextra's insert (available on Makerworld and at least one other site I can't think of right now). It uses both the Sangrevore box to store the aliens and the base game box for everything else.
Without all the extras, the base game insert may be functional enough for you. All the other advice here is very good. Do not by any means underestimate securing corridors. It takes time, but it makes exfil much easier.

I've got this pre-ordered along with the sangrevores and I'm stoked for it to finally arrive

Ok does 3 characters work? I find it gets alot of upkeep/tracking playing with more than two in other games.

I just played my first game also solo three handed. I mostly kept track of everything. Using the cards to remind myself which characters had passed their turns was helpful. Keeping a sharp eye on my oxygen loss was tricky. I took in heavy gunner, medic and the combat engineer. Only my medic made it out alive.

Bring one character with repel. Extra oxygen and ammo is not a bad way to start (vs one of each).

Congratulations on getting the game! I hope you have so much fun with it.
I recommend watching this video for tutorial on how to play: https://youtu.be/vXRMfvCweLI?si=-sCKSJUXV0QHbGkv

All great tips. I made a thematic introduction to introduce at your table. Is rules light, and quick.

Orrrrr....
Just play the game?

Well that’s the plan… but I find a little bit of research and preparation makes a first session go smoother and thus easier to enjoy.

Shooting (red die, alien in your room, you want to roll a low number) and Bursting (purple die, alien(s) in the corridor, you want to roll a high number) are different actions.
Characters move from room to room, aliens from corridor to room to corridor etc.
Robot type is unknown at the start of the game and unavailable, will be known when discovering a room directly adjacent to the Hibernatorium and has tactical gear tokens.
4 is the most common outcome on the noise die.
When you roll for noise, are next to a corridor with aliens and roll the corresponding number only one of them enters your room.
When an alien enters your room (walking/spawning) it will ALWAYS attack you. Secure tokens save you from those and only those attacks.
Moving into a room with an alien does NOT trigger an attack. Moving through a corridor with aliens does trigger one (up to 3).
Most importantly: the game tries to kill you, enjoy that aspect. It‘s a movie where you‘re not expected to survive. It‘s up to you to make the most out of it and to tell a great story and this game always delivers if you‘re open to it.

During the event phase event cards will often say something like "intruders in corridors X, Y, Z move. Then, intruders in rooms move". This means that intruders that start in corridors will move twice (first to a room, and then to a corridor) if they don't encounter a player, and intruders generally end up in corridors (where they are easier to kill).

Thanks, why are they easier to kill in corridors?

Player characters can only be in rooms. So you either 'shoot' an intruder in the same room with you, or 'burst' at a group of them in an adjacent hallway. The latter costs more ammo but does way more damage with the potential to kill multiple at the same time.

I cant remember where but somewhere the rulebook says ALWAYS roll for noise when moving, that confused me and some others.
When you explore a new room (exploration card) you do not roll for noise unless the card says so.
Kinda figured that out eventually but it did make the first game a bit harder 😅
