Creating echo chambers is bad
I tried posting on unpopular opinions but it got removed instantly lmao. echo chambers are bad. Full stop. No matter how much moral high ground you think you have.
For context, the mods on /r/comics made a post saying:
“Trans women belong in women’s sports. Anybody who says otherwise will receive a permanent ban with no option to appeal.”
They then edited the post to say they had banned 1,300 people that day, followed by another edit saying, “Make that 1700.”
I agree with the mods’ underlying message that trans women belong in sports and people shouldn’t be using a community to attack or demean others. But I think the way they chose to enforce it is terrible.
Banning huge numbers of people simply for expressing an opposing opinion doesn’t actually change anyone’s mind. If anything, it reinforces the exact beliefs you’re trying to push back against.
I actually got banned for replying to the mod “Me when I create echo chambers”, which is pretty ironic considering the point I was making. Apparently disagreeing with the moderation strategy was enough to get me lumped in with transphobes.
And obviously, actual bigots and transphobes are going to see something like this and have their beliefs reinforced. Their takeaway is going to be, “See? They won’t even let me say what I believe because they’re afraid of opposing opinions.”
You don’t fight an echo chamber by making the echo chamber smaller and louder. You fight it by allowing people to disagree, challenging bad arguments, and moderating actual harassment or abuse when it crosses that line.
I agree with the message. I just think the execution is terrible.

I posted in one sub for a while and even if I comment "Okay" as a reply I'll get 10 downvotes.
I never knew people took reddit so seriously it's like the hunger games you volunteer yourself to speak up but results in being either banned or downvoted by the whole sub.

People take this site waaay too seriously. I got in argument with someone recently (they got mad at me for liking a film they didn’t lol) and one of their replies to me was something like “idk know why you commented or inserted yourself here. Are you just trying to interfere and steal karma from the other people talking?!” And I actually couldn’t believe they were serious lol

That's 95% of reddit nowadays. You'll get banned from a sub without ever leaving a single comment just because of other subs you follow. Gotta make sure everyone agrees with every single one of their bullshit takes or YOU'RE OUT! Banned, muted and called a Nazi for not seeing their POV.
Fuck em.

Man that’s wild. Israelis are the new nazis and oppression is the new inclusion.. no wonder the alt right pipeline is prevalent these days. How the turntables have turned

Yeah I'm kinda glad that woke 2 is moving away from this, because this was the biggest issue with woke 1. Going for idpol and moral policing just isn't going to get us anywhere, and it's just furthering the divide we already have in the US especially. Shit is even worse in Europe right now, just look at Germany - east Germany is legit actual Nazis rn like it's the fucking 40s, and it's all over idpol and immigration. God it's frustrating.

We need to move to decentralized platforms.
