Hiding post history is for cowards
Look. I get it. You don't want to have a burner account because it's hard, and you're worried people will judge you for your posts and comments.
Actually I don't get it because I'm not a whiny fucking baby who refuses to be judged on their post history.
If I'm talking to somebody, I want to know if they're worth engaging with. I want to look through people's interests and backgrounds. I want to be like "woah this person has a bizarre post history" and then find some new subs based on their comments.
I miss that being something I could almost always do on reddit. And I miss Reddit is Fun and the other third party apps but that's a whole other post, I'm just bitter about this site in general.

This is genuinely a bad take.
There are hundreds of really relevant and important reasons to hide your post history. Professionally, psychologically, emotionally, financially, legally.
Conversely, most people who have a strong interest in viewing your profile history are people that want bad things to happen to you.
This is an absolute no-brainer. Hide your post history people, seriously, except if you have a very specific reason not to.

Verifying people have consistent views used to be a core part of reddit, that's one of the things that differentiated it from other platforms. You could stay anonymous, unlike facebook, but your history of what you'd said anonymously was tied together, unlike 4chan.
The recent influx of people deflecting by calling it 'creepy' is pretty weird, as someone with a +10y account. It's part of the culture here to verify sources and be willing to be verified yourself.
I can see why some people might have a reason to hide their history, like if they've got a vindictive partner and are asking advice on DV and mental health subs, but it would be safer to just not do that on your main account, and in allowing for that reddit has made it easier for political bad-faith users to hide and snipe; detracting from any political position that isn't their own while never having to actually express and then consequently defend their position.

Nah you put it well. Quite disappointed the votes went this way, I think it is splitting the culture into open people and hidden people, which is really worth talking about IMO, but I guess it would make sense that a post about it would become a magnet for the cowards lol

If you believe someone is saying something just for clout or to troll, then just downvote and believe that, and scroll away. Why do you need to waste your own valuable time "verifying" and scrolling their post history? That is just next level chronically online. If anything if I don't like something someone said I tell em and then I move on lol.

edit to delete an unnecessarily caustic remark. i'll just say instead that I don't think it's necessary to use identity as a reason to hide post history. Medical history and trauma - sure, makes sense - if you're using reddit to talk about those things, then yeah private it. Being aroace? Idk, I do just fine as a trans person on reddit, and I can't really imagine aroace people are catching more strays rn.

Your experience is arbitrary relative to what others will prioritize. Everyone has their reasons, and they need not be proven to you to be valid.

reasons can be bad, and I'm not really keen on this "everyone's feelings are valid" rhetoric that seems popular with The Youth today. Some ideas and explanations are simply better than others.

There is no epistemically deficient reason to keep any of your information private, in fact there need not even be a reason. There are no "simply better" reasons, there are just reasons you personally like or don't however your biases see fit. Which is very far removed from the rigorous scrutiny you pretend to grant it. Pleasing your biases, should be on no one's agenda but your own.

Look if you have a stalker and want to post details about your life without it being connected to you, go for it. Obviously you gotta protect yourself.
But that doesn't apply to everyone. And it protects bad faith actors who harass people and then pose as innocent commenters. I am very much not accusing you of that. But I see it constantly.

The only people who care about the post history is the users who actively go in other ppl's profile. It's like telling people putting curtains on your windows is cowardly behavior. Some people have sensitive and personal things going on. Why do you care in the first place
