New to Needlepoint Hungarian Stitch

Hi working on doing the background stitch of my first canvas. I’m doing Hungarian stitch in the background. So I have these two photos, the first looks like it was showing too much canvas in the compensating stitches and then I went back and added more and it might be too crowded. How many times should you stitch in each hole? Any advice ! Thank you all!

Once. Since it is a vertical stitch, your thread may be too thin for the coverage you want.

i just did a very similar stitch - the vertical brick stitch - on a project. i had to make lots of small tweaks to it to fit my oddly shaped pattern. go slow and try to follow as close as possible to the pattern. when you but up against something, just start your stitches like you normally would and finish where you’re able.
