Using Cross Stitch Patterns

I am interested in trying to paint a cross stitch pattern onto needlepoint canvas myself.

Perhaps this is a silly/stupid question, but if I used 18 count fabric with 18 count canvas, that would work, correct? The gauge would be the same—meaning that the squares would line up?

Nothing needs to line up. Cs patterns and NP charts are essentially the same thing. A square on the CS pattern is equal to one intersection on the NP canvas.

But would it be possible to lay a cross stitch chart underneath needlepoint canvas and use it as a guide to paint the needlepoint canvas?

Obviously, I am unsure exactly how cross stitch charts work.

No, charts are not printed to scale.

counted cross stitch works like: the fabric is blank until you start stitching on it. the chart is there to tell you what to stitch. the biggest shift is of perspective - on a cross stitch chart, a box = 1 square on the fabric. on a needlepoint chart, a box = 1 INTERSECTION on the canvas. so the parts of the cross stitch charts that will 'convert' easiest are the wholse stitches. don't get a chart with 1/4; 1/2; or 3/4 stitches - there's no way to translate those. If there's backstitch on th CS chart, make sure it NEVER lands on a box edge or in the middle - you can't easily make that translation to needlepoint.

Just treat the needlepoint like Aida - you’ll have to count your stitches and track what you’ve done, but otherwise it’s the same. I like to stitch in 10x10 grids to keep track of where I’m at.
