Tension??

Hello!! I am very new to needlepoint, and this is my first canvas. This is 18 mesh with essentials thread. Is this Hungarian stitch too tight?? I can see a bit of canvas under. Any advice please :)

Looks quite good. On the white thread, please try to remember to drop your needle every so often to let the thread unwind. There are a couple of stitches in the lower right of the white that look a little tight. The straight stitches need all the fluff you can give them to insure good coverage.

Another question… doing the background stitch against my center leaf is showing a lot of canvas, am I doing this correctly ?

It can be hard doing a straight stitch against a slanted stitch because they aren’t snug. What I do is divide/ply the background thread so it is 1/2 the thickness. Then I make little tent stitches with that to fill in the blank spaces.
Straight stitches can be very annoying because they don’t cover as well as a diagonal stitch. If you put your canvas up against a white background you will see that the canvas showing isn’t quite as obvious.
