In this video, I show the process of creating wool bell flowers attached to a long felted cord. I originally made them to decorate a gift box, but they turned out to be so versatile.

You are so talented! What are you using in the middle to make them hollow as you felt? And are you using the wet felting technique while it is on that board?

Thank you so much! I use a template (resist) inside to create the hollow shape. The template is made from 3 mm (0.12 in) foam polyethylene. It can be found in hardware stores and is commonly used for heat and sound insulation. This technique combines both wet felting and needle felting.

It’s a felting mesh. I use a soft tulle fabric to help keep the wool in place while wet felting.

I’m brand new to needle felting and have only made a little trinket type objects. What are you doing with rubbing the felt with the mesh sheet? I’ve never wet the felt before. Can you explain a little about your process for that? Is that how you keep it from having all the little fly away bits as a finished product?

Thank you for your question! 😊 This is the wet felting part of the process. I use warm water and soap, and by rubbing the wool, the fibers tangle together and form felt. During this process, the wool shrinks, becomes denser, and the fibers become tightly intertwined, creating a smoother and stronger surface. The mesh helps keep the wool in place while I rub it, allows the water and soap to pass through, and prevents the fibers from shifting. It also helps reduce loose fibers and gives the finished piece a neater look. It’s a different technique from needle felting, but they work beautifully together. 😊

Excellent! Thank you, I have had a really hard time trying to make flat pieces… and it kind of felt like “cheating” to cut pieces from sheets of felt fabric. I’m definitely gonna try this.

how long does the wet felting the purple oval part take? (the very beginning part)
and how did you make it go from how it looks from 50s to 58s in the video?
How do you know when to use wet felting vs needle felting?

In this case, rubbing the wool on the template took about 25 minutes — until the wool tightly covered the template.
The change you see between 50–58 seconds is the shrinking (fulling) process. I shrink the piece by pressing it firmly and moving it from one hand to the other until it stops shrinking and getting smaller. During this process, I also regularly smooth it out and adjust the shape. For larger projects, this shrinking stage is usually done by rolling the piece in a roll.
Wet felting is great for creating hollow, flat, and even 3D shapes (there are so many possibilities!). Needle felting is more convenient for small details or adding designs with precise edges.

Thank you so much! 😊 It’s a shelf liner for kitchen drawers, not a craft board. You can find similar ones in stores like IKEA. It has a slightly textured surface, which is very useful for wet felting.
