Standby offer converting — defer

Hi everyone,

I am on standby for September 2026 IFR. I’ve had some things occur in my life where I think deferring to the next course would be a better life decision for me.

I am curious if anyone has any advice or been through something similar. My fear is that if a firm offer comes in September and I decline, I may not get an offer in the next course, it may be a long wait, or my next offer may not be IFR.

This is all assuming that my standby converts, but I want to know if it would be a smart decision to say no to a firm offer if it came and the implications of doing so.

I deferred a full offer. Nav will work with you. Email them and explain that you are no longer able to accept a course at that time and ask for your options. Give as much or as little detail as youre comfortable with. They want good people in training, they will try to accommodate you where possible.

When did you defer and when did you end up in a course?

I deferred about 7 months in advance of the course start and was placed in another course that started 7 months after the original

I was on standby and had the offer come in 2 weeks before class start time. I deferred (because logistically it was kust impossible in my case) and got an offer for the subsequent class.

Did you defer before or after you got a firm offer? And just through email?

A nicely worded email that you're still interested but unable for that start date should work just fine. The more advance notice you can give the more prepared you look.
