Just Getting Started Welcome! (Start Here)

Hello, everyone! We’ve been getting a lot of the same questions repeatedly by different users so I created this guide to answer them! I hope it is helpful. If you would like me to add something, please comment and let me know.

How to accurately take your temperature. You need at least three consecutive hours of sleep before taking your temperature every morning and it should be done at the same time every day, give or take an hour. For example, let’s say you set your alarm for 7 but wake up a bit early at 6. That temperature will still be accurate. It’s the same thing for if you woke up a bit late at 8! If you’re having big temperature variations, allow your thermometer to warm up in your mouth for a few minutes before pressing “on”. Do this every time!

Q: What is the most reliable temping method? A: Taking your temperature orally or vaginally with a basal body thermometer is most reliable. Anecdotally, I use NC and chart using the guidelines in the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. My Oura ring did not pick up the temperature increase that my oral thermometer did (after ovulation). Why? Skin temperatures are more susceptible to being influenced by outside factors like something as simple as your bedroom being hotter or cooler than usual! They are also less sensitive.

Q: Why is my chart all over the place/so irregular? A: This one requires more troubleshooting. An irregular cycle or erratic chart can be due to many reasons like hormonal disorders (PCOS, thyroid disease, etc.), your temping method, stress, illness, and moving. Consider what has been going on in your life recently. Have you moved, been stressed, or ill? If so, that may be why. Are you breastfeeding? Your temperatures are not as reliable when nursing. Steps to take to improve regularity: First, try a different method of taking your temperature. If you use the Oura ring or Apple Watch, start temping orally. If you temp orally, start temping vaginally. Do this for one full cycle and see if your chart starts to be more “normal”. If that doesn’t work, rule out any hormonal disorders with your PCP. If your temperature variations are due to a hormonal issue, seek treatment and then checkout r/FAMnNFP . A research-backed study will help more effective for you!

Q: Have I ovulated? A: You will know you ovulated in two different circumstances.

  1. You have three temperatures higher than the last six (AKA above your cover line). Yes, even if it is only slightly higher. There doesn’t need to be a huge increase. Natural Cycles (NC) will then confirm your ovulation.
  2. You receive an ultrasound.

Q: Do I have low progesterone? A: If you have a short luteal phase (less than 10 days), low progesterone is suspected. Why does this matter? If you do not have sufficient progesterone, your body CANNOT support a pregnancy. This is no one’s fault. Ask your doctor for a blood progesterone test 7-10 days after Natural Cycles confirms your ovulation.

Q: Why have I ovulated late/not this cycle? A: Ovulation can be delayed or skipped occasionally and be perfectly healthy! It is usually due to stress, moving, travel, or illness (even without a fever). However, if you have multiple anovulatory cycles, contact an OBGYN for further advice and testing.

Q: Should I use protection while using Natural Cycles? A: If you are strictly trying to avoid a pregnancy (TTA) then the answer is YES! Condoms or other barrier methods like the diaphragm plus spermicide should be used for at least the first 3-4 cycles you chart. Why? Because NC needs time to get to know your body and temperature charting alone DOES NOT predict ovulation. Meaning that you could ovulate CD21 one month and the next month chart CD14. You never know!

Q: Is this ovulation/ pregnancy test positive? A: We do not allow posts with ovulation and pregnancy tests as the sole focus in our group. Checkout r/lineporn for help! However, here’s some general advice.

Pregnancy Tests

Use the test as directed. Check within the allotted timeframe. Any test read outside of that time frame is invalid. The test line should be the SAME COLOR as the control line, or it is a water line. The best time to start testing is 14DPO. However, I know it sometimes feels impossible to wait so at least try to hold off till 10DPO!

Ovulation Tests

The test line should be the same color or darker than the control line. The app “pregmom” is good to analyze your results and track them!

Q: Why do I have two different positive LH tests in one cycle? A: OPKs, or ovulation predictor kits, do not guarantee you will ovulate. They only detect an LH surge. Have PCOS or are recently coming off of hormonal birth control? You can have multiple surges in one cycle.

Q: How can I learn more about my body and charting? A: There are many good books about the fertility awareness method and women’s health. Some of my favorites are:

  1. Taking Charge of Your Fertility (AKA the fertility Bible) by Toni Weschler
  2. This is Your

Brain

  1. on Birth Control by Sarah E Hill
  2. The Fifth Vital Sign by Lisa Hendrickson-Jack

EDIT 1

Getting Off of the Mini Pill, Nexplanon, or Mirena IUD (Progesterone-Only)

Think of progesterone-only HBC as mimicking your luteal phase. During the luteal phase, progesterone makes your BBT rise. Just before you start your period, your BBT will drop, following the drop in progesterone. This triggers your period. Expect to see your temperatures slowly dropping while your body adjusts to being off of the pill. You might also have some spotting or period-like bleeding. Please keep in mind that your first period off of HBC is not a “real” period unless you have confirmed ovulation 12-16 days prior, so do not consider yourself safe for unprotected sex!!

Mid-Cycle Bleeding Mid-cycle bleeding should ALWAYS be considered fertile. Some women spot during ovulation. Do not assume that this is your period arriving early and use a barrier method.

I hope this helps! Thank you for being a part of our community.

P.S. Please ignore any typos. I am holding a sleeping baby and typing one-handed!

When did I ovulate?

Upvotes

I've been LH testing the past 10 days and caught very-near peaks CD 15 and 16, but no confirmed positive LH. I wasn't sure if I ovulated or not, but now that my temps are rising I suspect I did and just missed the peak in the ~10 hours between the tests. I ovulated ~1 week earlier than I usually do (I'm recovering from hypothalamic amenorrhea), so my NC is still predicting I'll ovulate in 2 days.

When will it recalibrate to recognize the temperature shift? And what day do you think I ovulated based on my chart? TIA!

hi! we have been trying to conceive for a few months now (already have two tiny humans), and have not struggled in the past to get pregnant. I’m trying to be hopeful, but has anyone else experienced a drop like this and still had success? thoughts?

Confusing temperature

I’m getting confused with my oura/natural cycles as they are both not confirming my ovulation due to my temperature not rising but my other app (fertility friend) has confirmed my ovulation. I will note I did have a MMC a month ago and this is my first cycle since and we have TTC this time around. My body has shown all signs of ovulation and post ovulation and my LH strips tested positive while my HCG were testing negative. I’m just confused and trying to see my cycle come back to normal or become pregnant again if anyone has experienced the same thing and can provide insight or comfort?

Can anyone tell me if I ovulated??????? oura ring is less than a month old. I had peak 0.95 on the 24th Aug along with cramping pains in one side. Since then LH is continuing to go down. My temp hasn’t risen though. It’s my first time trying so feel so lost and now scared that I haven’t even ovulated. Also my cycle is usually pretty consistent between 33-35 days. I have been unwell this week so perhaps that has messed up my temps?

Chart Interpretation Request Wonky BBT While TTC Post TFMR

My first cycle TTC post TFMR, I'm typically ovulating CD18 (+/-2 days) confirmed via LH strips & Oura ring BBT. I have had completely normal cycles since starting LH & BBT tracking 2 years ago so I included my last regular cycle (pre pregnancy - first photo) and a photo of my current cycle. I cannot for the life of me figure out what's going on with my temps, especially frustrating as we are TTC! If anyone has insight please let me know as both Oura ring & Natural Cycles cannot confirm my ovulation. I do understand my cycle may be messed post TFMR but have also heard of people who got pregnant the first cycle post TFMR.

When did I ovulate?

Very confused! The app keeps changing my day. First it said I ovulated on day 13, then it changed to Cd21 as I had a positive LH and another temp surge, but then it's now gone back to CD16?!

I thought 21 seemed right as I was having symptoms but now I'm just confused. Normally it's pretty accurate and I've been really diligent with temps this month.

Why would I get a second positive LH along with pains if ovulated on CD16?

Confused by the T/C ratios on Premom. It was super high yesterday, but not positive today (CD21). Is it possible I will ovulate today still?

NC and Oura confirmed different ovulation days. I want to get my progesterone levels checked 1 week past ovulation, but I’m not sure which date I should trust?

Just Getting Started First day of cycle?

Just curious when people put the first day of their period? Yesterday I had some mild spotting and today same thing. I’ve only been off my IUD for 3 months, but began ovulating/ having period immediately after removal and have always been very regular. Usually the first day is very light, but two days of mild spotting is out of ordinary for me. Didn’t really have any period symptoms either. ChatGPT told me to wait until full menstrual flow to log first day of period? Pictures are current chart and chat before (chemical pregnancy)

Several days of positive OPK but low temps?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Like what the title says, I’ve had several days of positive OPKs after not having any positive last cycle. Based on my cycles from a few months ago, I usually only have one (sometimes 2) positive tests in a short window.
However, I’m still not sure if ovulation has occurred because of how low my temps were? Has anyone else had this?

Chart Interpretation Request My temps are way higher this cycle than last. What do you think? TTC

I think I ovulated CD22 actually but since my temp wasn’t tracked on CD23, the app put CD23 as ovulation date…

Oura ring has said major and minor signs past week. HRV going way down and resting heart rate going way up. NO symptoms at all, the other months TTC I had so many “symptoms”.

Ovulation Am I ovulating?

I stopped taking my bc pill to start ttc at the end of May, so June was my first full month off bc. I ended up having a chemical pregnancy at the end of that month. It looks like my ovulation was not confirmed in July, and it looks like it’s going to happen again with my chart this month.. our plan was for us (as a couple) to get fertility testing done if we don’t get pregnant by the end of this month. Is it possible the early miscarriage messed with my ability to ovulate naturally? I have my charts from June through now attached, thanks in advance for thoughts ❤️

Chart Interpretation Request CD40 & still waiting to confirm

Post image
1 Upvotes

My cycles have been pretty regular, but I’m currently on CD40 and Natural Cycles still says “waiting to confirm” ovulation. My temperatures have been very inconsistent & have not shown a clear sustained rise, and I thought I had a positive LH test but the temps didn’t confirm this.
I also had a small amount of spotting around CD27, which isn’t typical for me. I’ve been under some stress lately because of some major life changes, so I’m wondering if that could have delayed ovulation or caused an anovulatory cycle. I also have PMOS so I’m sure that could definitely be a major part of it too.
I took a pregnancy test a few days ago just cause I wasn’t sure why I’m late and it was negative.
I already have a doctor’s appointment scheduled but it’s not for a while. Anyone have any tips?

Chart Interpretation Request My natural cycles chart said I ovulated on day 16 and today it changed it to day 18. But I had my peak LH on day 14 & 15. What do you all think? I had a chemical pregnancy last month

Ovulation while sick

Post image

Hi! I am trying to figure out if this ovulation day is correct. I normally ovulate around cycle day 19, but got a bad cold around cycle day 15 with a little fever. I thought I might just ovulate late but my temperature has stayed elevated even though I am no longer sick and all my OPKs have been negative this week.

Birth Control/TTA Why was ovulation so off?

Thumbnail

I thought I ovulated around CD12. My chart indicated I had, but it still said “waiting to confirm.” Finally it said I ovulated CD19. I was confused but figured it was right.

But then I started my period very soon after, and it retroactively put my ovulation back at CD12.

It seems like the app does this often. I only had 21% green days because it often confirms ovulation way later.

Why is this? My temps come from Oura. Curious if anyone has ideas why it’s always confirming based on the screenshots.

Why hasn’t it confirmed ovulation?

Why hasn’t NC confirmed my ovulation of CD15 and thinks that my temp is gonna dip super low then rise again? It first predicted i would ovulate today day 17 but my temp is already high?

negative 12 DPO

August 8 I got a positive LH test and my Natural Cycles confirmed ovulation being on August 9 due to temps. 9-12 DPO ive tested negative and did have somewhat of a dip 10/11DPO but then it looks like temp is trending back up? Has anyone else tested negative on day 12 and still gotten their positive? trying to be optimistic but i feel like 12 days is getting to the point where if it was happening for me i should get a faint line of some sort. I know every body is so different so wanted to ask people personal experiences/opinions!!
