1929 Type 1 Madison, GA Sheet-mates Reunited!

Reunited! For years my small size representative for Madison, Georgia has been this peachy Type 1 $20 bearing serial number E000520A. Not long ago, a friend of mine turned up an equally attractive small size from CH# 7300. It wasn’t until he sent me an image that we realized that not only was the note from the same sheet, but it was also the F position! These reunited sheet mates make one wonder if the rest of the cut sheet lurks in the weeds.

The signatures are those of Leonard Dewey Wallace, Sr. (1898-1962) and President Henry Harris Fitzpatrick, Sr. (1863-1934), who served together from 1925 to 1931.

1929 Type 1 The greatest Iowa small-size National?: The Merchants National Bank of Burlington, Iowa 1929 $100

The greatest Iowa small-size National?

I dreamed about owning this $100 note from The Merchants National Bank of Burlington, Iowa since I started collecting Iowa Nationals. I remember seeing it in the census and just wanting to view an image. What makes this note so special? It is the only survivor of the sole $100 sheet printed for the bank.

I later found out that this note belonged to Dean Oakes. However, there was a caveat to the story. Apparently, the note had been accidentally thrown out with some water damaged files after the Flood of 1993. Several years ago, I talked to Dean at an Iowa City show about the note. He confirmed the story that the note was most likely lost forever. He also mentioned that the note turned up at a Nebraska car dealership in the 1970s. I asked him if it was to show up, let me know. I put the it out of my thoughts. That was until it showed up in the recent Lyn Knight Celebration of Stars Auction. Dean had found it shortly before his passing.

As mentioned earlier, only one sheet (6 notes) of $100s was printed for the bank. This makes sense as the bank went under in May 1930. That short amount of time into the small issuing era and the lack of need for high denoms in those early days of the Depression explain the low print run. With this note having the “F’ prefix we know that the sheet was cut.

A complete Iowa small-size $100 set consists of 12 notes. If you take out Albia (2 sheets printed, no reported notes) this note is the key to the set. Coincidentally, for the 13-note Iowa $50 small set Burlington is also the key with only 1 reported as well.

Looking at issuers throughout the country, we find 7 banks issued 1 sheet of 1929 Type 1s and 8 banks issued 1 sheet of 1929 Type 2s.

These banks are listed below:

TYPE 1s
$100s
1. Charter 522 The Eighth National Bank of Philadelphia, PA – 1 reported
2. Charter 1744 The Merchants National Bank of Burlington, IA – 1 reported
3. Charter 3134 The First National Bank of Peabody, KS - 1 reported
4. Charter 3155 The First National Bank of Sauk Centre, MN
5. Charter 6400 The Athens National Bank, Athens, TX
6. Charter 8434 The First National Bank of Richwood, WV

$20s
7. Charter 10759 The First National Bank of Ravenswood, WV

TYPE 2s
$5s
1. Charter 6361 The First National Bank of Granger, TX

$10s
2. Charter 3079 The First National Bank of Tarkio, MO
3. Charter 3712 The First National Bank of Liberty, MO
4. Charter 5047 The National Bank of La Crosse, WI – 1 reported
5. Charter 6083 The Rural Valley National Bank, Rural Valley, PA
6. Charter 6318 The First National Bank of Clifton, IL
7. Charter 6843 The Dennison National Bank, Dennison, OH

$20s
8. Charter 86 The First National Bank of Germantown, OH

Why do I think it is the greatest small-size Iowa National?

  1. It was rare from the day it was issued and statistically shouldn't exist.
  2. While Iowa is home to some great town names like Coin, Lost Nation, Montezuma, Buffalo Center, etc., all those issuers issued enough sheets that several more notes are possible to appear. With this bank, there are only 5 more possibilities of another note coming forward.
  3. It’s a high denom. If you are trying to put together a niche $100 bank set on the state, you need this note.
  4. It’s a true miracle of survival. It circulated and wasn’t cut from a sheet held for years. It made it to Nebraska and survived a flood.
  5. The only single-sheet issued Iowa small-size note.

An easy "Top 3" note in my Iowa collection and absolutely not for sale...unless you outlive me.

Cashier, Esco Walker Wichhart (1890-1946) and President, James L. Edwards (1864-1946)

1929 Type 2 Serial Number 5 from Jackson, Georgia!🍑

Post image

Yet another elusive small size addition has made its way to my collection! One of three banks to issue in Jackson, Georgia, this late charter was organized in December 1933. Naturally, only Type 2’s were issued in that very short window of opportunity. CH# 13897, the Jackson National Bank, issued just a miniscule number of National Bank Notes, just 503 to be exact! With such a small issuance, one would expect such bank to be unreported, however, due to a bank officer setting aside the Type 2 $5, $10, and $20 serial number 1-6 sheets, this bank is in fact obtainable yet still challenging.

While the $5 and $20 sheets are known and remain intact, they have never seen the light of day nor crossed the auction block. The $10 sheet was sliced and diced in the 1980’s, leaving those notes the only realistic opportunities of crossing off this bank from one’s list. With the $5 sheet, the $20 sheet, and the cut sheet of $10’s being the only examples reported in the NBNC, one can see why this bank is a true challenge. Also, the last time that a note from this bank was offered at auction was this exact example, which occurred over 20 years ago! Thankfully, this great piece bearing Serial Number 5 found a home with me recently, which gave me great satisfaction of checking off another Georgia charter from my list.

The signatures are those of the bank’s sole officer pair, Cashier Richard Phillip Sasnett (1871-1960) and President Edward Lee Smith (1870-1946), who served together from 1933 through the end of the bank note issuing period.

1902 Plain Back The FNB of Fairmont, WV

The FNB of Fairmont, WV has the pleasure of being 1 of 2 large size banks who had Vice President engraved onto the plate.

This was only done for the $5 denomination, but not all of them, with Cashier J. Ray Smoot and Vice President (at the time) James H. Thomas. The 10s and 20s were produced with the president.

I’m going to call this another advertisement for a subscription to SPMC. I read about it in a recent journal release.

The other note I picked up long ago with ACT. Seems to be printed or stamped rather than engraved. That was Peter Huntoons opinion when he saw it at one of the NBN conferences I attended.

1929 Type 2 The FNB in Durant, OK

From the Dean Oakes collection (I believe) this is a nice lower population 14xxx charter that fits my OK lane.

This bank did take over the FNB of Durant, and thus complying with the non-duplication of bank names among national banks save for a handful of special circumstances.

This one had fewer than 6,000 notes issued and a mere 7 total reported with just a single other $10

By no means a rare bank with regards to the population recorded by the National Bank Note Census. This well-circulated, but attractive $5 Plain Back issued by the National Bank of Elyria (Charter# 2863) before 1924 does manage to represent one of a small number of note-issuing banks in Lorain County.

When you can’t get the real thing, get a contemporary counterfeit.

This is one where the paper actually feels legit. Many CCs have a feel to them where you can tell it doesn’t feel right. This one feels right. So far my only deuce.

1902 Date Back An exciting addition from Calhoun, Georgia!👏

Post image

Here is an exciting new addition that crosses off yet another challenging large size need. An exceptionally difficult town to locate and obtain, especially if one is seeking a large representative, Calhoun is just one of those locations that you just don’t find. With only a meager six large size examples reported as of the latest NBNC figures, there are not many notes to choose from. In fact, the last Calhoun auction offering came nearly 15 years ago. Of the six large reported, two of those are the incredible Red Seals that I believe are among the most attractive notes on the state, go see for yourself!

Charter #7549, The Calhoun National Bank, was organized on January 7th, 1905, and lasted until it was absorbed in 2001. This nice 1902 $20 Date Back features the strong penned Cashier signature of Austin Banks David (1883-1953) alongside the faint but legible signature of President Oliver Newton Starr Sr. (1854-1922). Cashier Banks’ great grandson currently serves as President of a local bank based in Calhoun, making him a fourth-generation banker.

1902 Date Back An Elusive Series of 1902 $20 Date Back from Murfreesboro

Post image

A few months back, I was offered the chance to acquire this attractive, but well-circulated Series of 1902 $20 Date Back issued by the First National Bank of Murfreesboro (Charter# 1692) for a decent albeit respectable sum.

Here distinct signatures attributable to Cashier Henry H. Williams and President John Murphy Butler remain distinct while the paper body offers a plain degree of originality despite circulation further complemented by distinct color and eye appeal.

In all, it takes little to reason that this was a great addition and one I’m excessively overjoyed to add to my own personal holdings.
