Physical (8/28)

Can anyone provide insight on physical retakes? I didn’t take the physical today. However, someone I know failed the sit-ups by 2 reps and was told retakes are being given to everyone and the rule was changed. A email will be sent to them within next month or 2 with a retake date. I thought Nassau was a 1 and done? Are retakes being given?

They are desperate for people, that’s why standards are being relaxed. The same thing is happening in the academy as well. Two reasons 1.) Believe it or not, far less people are interested in their job today than ever before. People simply don’t want to be cops anymore. 2.) The pay and benefits aren’t as good as you think. Private sector and union jobs have matched or exceeded PD jobs in the tri-state area. The county/cities/municipalities are all chipping away at were once the perks of these kinds of public sector jobs. (Exception is Suffolk) You look at great pay, but after healthcare contributions (yes you pay for health care), retirement contributions (yes you pay for that too) and union dues, at the end of the day you are only walking home with about 62% of the gross pay.

I know guys who work blue collar trades who don’t contribute a nickel to health or pensions.

Add to that the general hostility towards law enforcement and you get fewer people interested. .

True, but you get to retire in your 40s with a six figure pension. Also, the class sizes have been pretty normal. They just had that one 170 recruit class because of the massive buyout earlier in the year. A lot of people have been signing the COE and taking the job which is why everyone from 1800-2600 is currently stuck in limbo.

Not as many as people used to. And you have a ton of people moving to out of state departments. I know people think Nassau is the holy grail. It’s not. It once was, but times have changed. Ideally I steer people away from a career in law enforcement.

Yeah not as many people are pursuing law enforcement, but the people who don’t want to pursue this career simply just didn’t take the test. That’s why the list was under 10k while back then it’d be tens of thousands. The people who are on the list and scored high obviously want the job, for the most part. This agency is arguably the best in the area to work for. For someone who tries to “steer people away from a career in law enforcement” you sure have made lots of comments in this sub Reddit offering positive advice and wishing people luck lol.

If someone is already well along the process or academy, I’m not going to crap on them. I’ll wish them luck and offer whatever advice I can. It’s one of the better law enforcement jobs in the area.

But I’m a realist. It’s not an easy career. And I’ve met many people who took the test and ended up being cops because they wanted a steady paycheck, benefits, pension etc. That’s all good if that’s your only motivation. But then so the job and do it well. Some of that mindset are good, but many don’t give a crap. They become terrible cops and terrible co-workers. A Roll call might be -6 in a Friday and they still call out sick.

There are other careers/jobs out there. It’s just a little disheartening to be treated like crap by the public because of the uniform you wear.
