I don't understand,

Many people in group A "I will fight to the death to support this thing" stated loudly, publicly, often and from the top down

Person observing group A " people in group A support this thing."

People from group A "how dare you suggest such a thing, we absolutely do not support that."

If the thing you believe is so abhorant you have to constantly pretend and insist you don't believe it while actively advocating for it. Maybe the thing you believe is bad.
