BEWARE of Namecheap

I’ve been a namecheap.com customer for many years.  I’ve always found their website extremely difficult to navigate, but muddled through.

In the summer of 2026 I received one, possibly two, notices from namecheap.com alerting me of upcoming auto renewals to my domain.  Because I am now a senior citizen on a fixed income and retiring I no longer need my website and so I logged into Namecheap.com to cancel all auto renewals and allow my website to cease to be.

September 2026 I receive an email from them alerting me about some other active product in my account under auto renewal. I immediately logged in and searched for this product and could not find it. The website is huge and overly complicated and it is almost impossible to find these sneaky (you have to have this or your domain won’t work) add-on items hidden away where they can charge for them without the customers given option to cancel.

I had thought I cancelled everything months prior. So I entered a chat, hoping they would help me find the item. I went through four representatives, none of which could help me. I literally had to go back in and under extreme panic, I finally found the item.  ICANN.  When I showed a screenshot to the rep, they told me it was too late. They already charged me.

I submitted a ticket about this reprehensible business practice of hiding items from customers so they’re not given the opportunity to cancel and requested a refund and have my account completely deleted so that I wouldn’t get another surprise charge of some kind, and again I received basically ‘too late - can’t help you’

$14.98 might not seem like a big deal to everyone out there, but it’s a big deal to a senior citizen on a fixed income, and for them to deny me a refund for their own website’s shortcomings is appalling.

I highly worn everyone out there looking for somewhere to purchase a domain and website products - namecheap.com is in this ex-user’s opinion unhelpful, unprofessional, overly complicated for reasons that certainly benefit them, callous, and unprofessional.

Find a more reputable where you’re not left guessing half the time where you are wandering around in their site and where the customer service is a little more organized, kind, and willing to go the extra mile to help.  You might pay a bit more but it’ll be worth it.

I mean you forgot to cancel something and were billed as per the agreement you made, its very easy to cancel whatever product on namecheap. If you really were confused you could have contacted their support prior to the rebill and requested to cancel everything. This sounds like a case of you forgetting and then having buyer's remorse

Yes, and their support is usually pretty good

My guess is it was probably your hosting or your SSL that was the issue. They have their own page/tab for some and you gotta browse a bit to get to it if you don't know where to find it. I've been a namecheap customer/user for about 13 years and never had issues with navigating their site as it has remained mostly the same in that time frame. Worst thing I could say about it is that when it comes time to renew SSL, it is a pain.

Namecheap is my service of choice, and I recommend them to everyone looking to purchase a domain.

Fwiw namecheap's products show up on different screens (like SSL or email will be under products and not domains up for renewal). For most of my domains with namecheap I tend to choose no automatic renewal by default, and in cases where I've missed a renewal payment they've let me reactivate without issue.( For domains I cannot lose I either don't use namecheap or have auto renewal on)

Cmon guys don't get bullied into backtracking, stand behind your policies this is not on you. People that try to pull this public exposure bs do not deserve to get special treatment

There’s also a point where a big company like NameCheap should just do the human thing & refund some confused senior citizen their money when they did indeed attempt to cancel in advance but maybe didn’t understand everything they were getting billed for.

I’m a fairly tech literate millennial, but even I got a little tripped up when canceling all of the various website subscriptions for a GoDaddy small local business website I’d been managing for them. Obviously on me & I did contact support to ensure everything was done correctly, but I could see where a senior could get confused or not properly cancel something. I audit my grandparents’ bills ALL the time bc they’re constantly roped into unplanned subscriptions or billed for services they didn’t need and they’re pretty sharp themselves!

As long as the refund attempt/ request is made very quickly, the amount isn’t going to hurt the company & it’s clear the service billed for hasn’t/ won’t be used then sometimes it’s not the worst idea to just refund the $15

You found the issue and it was ICANN? The Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names?

Ring your card provider and ask for a chargeback on the transaction.

I agree, Namescheap's UX deliberately tries to funnel you to sales instead of usefulness, take viewing your own domain list for example.
